The Great British Bake Off

Love Nancy - just winging it, and none of that handwringing self-effacing bs. When her doughnuts come out a bit overdone, does she (a) look at her shoes and cry about how rubbish her baking is, or (b) paint faces on them and hang them on a tree, distracting the judges? Ace.. :hat:

This year there's been a lot more bread baked - not sure if it's Berry's agent complaining that if they get paid the same, they should do the same number of episodes, or if it's Hollywood's agent demanding more work. Still, if it means more men making it through to the end that's all good.

Chetna still annoys me: "I put three times the spices in this".. "mmm, exotic". Luis' bakes are always pretty, but they seem to be style over substance.

Richard looks like the most obvious winner in Bake-Off history. Really thought Luis was going to get Star Baker this week and was genuinely surprised that Chetna rather than Nancy got the push (though delighted - Nancy, Luis and Martha were my favourite three).

Bah! Wrong person went out IMO.

Why? Chetna did badly in all three parts of the semi-final. Nancy beat her on taste in the baklava, on layers and decoration in the technical, and on presentation in the Showstopper. Yes, Nancy has been weaker in the past but it was a bad weekend for Chetna.

Nancy has been pretty consistent to me. It would have been surprising for her not to make the final. Luis is the one that could go all wrong or totally right on the day. His stuff looks great, but at times he does veer into style over substance.

Mind you mrs no flavour but looks awesome managed to put that right and win the final the other year, and he's a million times better than her.

Totally agree. Chetna was very good and I'd love to try some of the cakes she made this series, but last night she had a bit of a nightmare.

Yeah, I know - and it always annoys me that they just base it on the most recent things baked. But I think Nancy has more often than not got by on pure luck, and Chetna's stuff is more interesting. Her showstopper looked better than Nancy's I thought, which had that runny glaze spoiling the look.

But yeah, I suppose she didn't have a great day.

No views on the final yet?

A worthy winner over the course of the final 3 challenges, I think, and all of the show stoppers looked great for different reasons.

I do love Bake Off, and the fact that you get the little "What person x has done since it finished." It's just all so nice.

Yeah, completely agree with all of that. Richard had a bad week (I think if they did it as a top three he'd have been third) and Luis didn't quite get the flavours right in his showstopper, as technically great as it was. Nancy's been top half most weeks, and I think it was only the week where she was vying with Chetna for the boot that she was at serious risk, so she's been pretty consistent even if she didn't win Star Baker very often. But I liked all three finalists this year, so I wasn't really bothered who won.

And yeah, the little postscripts for each baker are lovely. Was watching with my wife and son and we all let out a little cheer when it said Martha had passed all her exams. Oh, and I've already pre-ordered Norman's autobiography, obviously.

Shock of the night: Luis isn't gay!

Ha I thought that too.

I was expecting Richard to fuck it up. But to be honest I still think he should have won. 5 times star baker, and he was probably a torte au citroen away from winning it last night.

We were glued to the final last night. First time watching it, after bingate drew me in a few weeks ago. It was lovely to watch a programme where everyone is nice to each other. Even Mary Berry, despite looking quite terrifying, seemed lovely. We both let out an 'ahhhhh' every time Martha came on the screen last night

They never do take in to consideration what people have done through the series in the final. If they did it would probably overturn every single winner they've had!

Well it's the same as other shows with an elimantion aspect; past performance counts for little. I suppose it is, in part, to help each episode be self-contained so you don't have to mentally-track what everybody does.

Sometimes though it does lead to a result that, in the context of the whole series, could be perceived as a little harsh.

Still, it is lovely little show, roll on the next series!

It's a great show. Although going on the show's history you really don't want to be the favourite going into the final. At least this year they all made a good attempt, even if Richard screwed himself on the technical challenge.

The year of the wedding cake final was really a the least worst wins!

Richard was last in every round last night, while Nancy was just about top in all three.

I was expecting Richard's showstopper to be amazing but like Paul Hollywood said, what he made, did look very childlike and the flavour combinations in the sponges were not that great either.

Didn't Richard also somehow fuck up the Victoria sponges as well, which really is unforgivable as any amateur baker can do a decent Victoria sponge including myself.
