Square-Enix's (and Ninja Theory's) Exciting New Direction!

Recommended Posts

Truthfully the PS1 was the last console where I was interested in Squaresoft (Enix) titles.

I don't know, I'm really looking forward to playing Dragon Quest VIII and the others on the go. I've always felt they work better as portable games anyway- the DS conversions of IV and V were great.

I was looking forward to seeing what a next gen Tomb Raider would look like after really enjoying the reboot. If it's going to be online focused I'm not so keen, I mean who plays multiplayer tomb raider anyway?

Absolute shit but can't say I'm surprised. Square-Enix have been leaning in this direction for a while.

According to Square, the very same audience that is looking forward to playing a multiplayer Legacy of Kain game.

Damn shame but they've been a bit weird recently anyway. That whole thing with expecting 6million (or whatever it was) sales of new Tomb Raider was just mental.

Does anyone know if smart phones stuff actually sell 'more', or is it just simply the return on investment is so much better? Did the FF games do good business at £11 or whatever it was?

I just noticed this thread was tagged under "Horror". Made me chuckle.

Square-Enix pretty much blamed their European games for the companies failures in the last year because of their unrealistic targets.

Also I think All the Bravest made quite a bit of money despite being a shitty game but it's all about those micro-transactions.

I'm guessing this is the best business decision but all I ever want from Square is to keep re-releasing Final Fantasy VII so I can perpetually exist in the time I bought it.

Everyone who isn't EA/Activision/Ubisoft is just not bothering with next gen then. Too expensive/risky.

Yeah, I'm sure that's really the case:

Rockstar Games' parent company Take-Two Interactive has "more than 10 unique titles" in development for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, it's been revealed, with some expected to be revealed "during the next several months".

The firm confirmed its next-gen plans during its Q2 2014 earnings call last night, when president Karl Slatoff stated that it had "more than 10 unique titles in our pipeline for next-generation consoles, which includes multiple releases planned for fiscal 2015. We understand and appreciate that both our consumers and shareholders are eager to learn more about our release schedule, and we expect to begin unveiling titles during the next several months."

CEO Strauss Zelnick added that the titles form "a robust development pipeline of new intellectual properties and offerings from our proven franchises, including multiple unannounced titles planned for release during fiscal 2015."

The losers of this gen are dropping out, same as every single gen, how many Hollywood studios compete these days in the Blockbuster market, compared to major game publishers? Or how many large book or music publishers still exist?

Ok, and Take Two.

'Told you so's this round go to Mr Gerbik, who mocked as "apocalyptic" my claim that next gen would see less Japanese support, and Vemsie, who said he expected studios like Squeenix to produce the more interesting titles next gen than the big 3. Oof.

What?

I can't recall I ever said that, but if you say so. I'll tell you what, if you can find a post of me saying that I'll give you a cookie.

I don't recall ever using the word 'apocalyptic' so I'd be curious as well to see a post of mine saying that. I'll double that cookie!

Technically it was "doomsday scenario". I was close!

I think you're being incredibly optimistic to expect Japanese development on PS4 or 720 which comes anywhere near to matching the present, which itself is an absolute shadow of last gen support. There's also the issue that PC indie won't really pick up the slack from Japanese devs as the PC scene there is much smaller and tends to doujin shooters and SRPGs that all throw in porn because their main demographic is absolute shut-in otakus. If you want to seek out trad Japanese gameplay experiences you're much better off looking for platforms with the lowest technical level and lowest dev costs - smartphones and 3DS, rather than next-gen consoles.

Maybe, nobody knows for sure at this point. If the doomsday scenario you describe comes to pass, the solution is simple fro me personally - a PC and a Vita/3DS as my main gaming platforms! I really don't see the problem here, I'll basically go wherever Yakuza and Tenchu/Shinobido go - hence my Vita purchase since Shinobido omg (and it was worth it!)
Can't find Vemsies atm
