So, they're putting the Genesis back into production...

Before I go crazy about this for sure, does anyone know if it will really have the original hardware included, scanlines and all? Or is this an emubox.

That site is impossible to read.

"The Mega Drive is not an emulator. The device has a circuit that includes components similar to the original product, since the original integrated circuits are no longer manufactured."

"The vast majority of TVs on sale in the Brazilian market has composite video input (RCA), compatible with the output of Mega Drive. Add the HDMI output to the console would raise the final price of the product to the consumer without increasing the original resolution."

"The Mega Drive plays the audio through similar components, so the result will not be 100% the same as the original."

I have a spare no-name one which you can have for free. Came with my second hand Jap MD2 - definitely RGB wired, but no idea what sync options it uses. I used it directly with my Sony LED screen and it worked fine, but I bought a fancy one from RetroGamingCables when I got the Framemeister RGB cables.

On the subject of which, RetroGamingCables do the best cables, but you need to know what you're asking for (PAL/NTSC, sync options, etc). All brand new, hand made in Hull.

Just wanted to give big thanks to Alexlotl for the cable. It works perfectly.

It's amazing how little of the available screen area you get to use.

Looks really nice though, far sharper and brighter than with the RF lead.

Some money will be 'winging'* its way to RSPB as soon as I next get paid.

**Not sorry

Knocked off another stage of Flashback while sick with norovirus last week - the Death Tower level. A bit meh, to be honest - the replicant things which largely populate it aren't hard to beat, you just roll when they do their hyper-run thing, then gun them down when they rematerialize. Not much in the way of puzzles in there either. The atmosphere was kind of OK, and I liked the wrap-around (which caught me off guard) but definitely the weakest level so far. Off to earth next, hopefully things pick up again...

I've also been sneaking games of Ghouls & Ghosts here and there. Such a great port, and so utterly bastard hard, in a fair way. After many attempts, the other night I finally managed to beat the L1 boss (in my pants), and got to Level 2, only to be repeatedly blatted by the stone turtle things. I should probably put it on practice mode, but I'm rather enjoying the lethal lessons.

Unfortunately, it seems to be another game where the Mega Everdrive's save-states don't work. About 50:50 on these so far - Phantasy Star 2 and the Sonic games work fine, but Flashback and Ghouls & Ghosts don't. However, I think there's a level select code for G&G, so it's not the end of the world.

Speaking of the Sonic games, my four year old is now a big fan of playing Sonic 2 with me - she controls Tails (sporadically), which gives her a level of immortality and lack of responsibility which is just perfect for her. She's well into the bonus stages though, and is pretty damn good at jumping over the bombs mixed in with the rings.

I also gave Toejam & Earl a go with her, and she quite enjoyed that - I thought it would be a good way to get used to using the D-Pad with her left thumb (she always wants to use her right index finger for everything). Turns out the 6-button pads, with their Saturn-style rolly D-Pads, are infinitely better than the conventional 3-button pad for this game - I guess it would have been a great candidate for analogue control, had it existed at the time.

Need to find the time to restore the arcade stick and give her a try with that - I reckon it would be far easier to start with than a D-Pad.

In other news, I got a decent condition Master System controller in the post today, for authentic SMS gaming on the Mega Drive (the Everdrive can effectively act as a power base converter and boot SMS roms in hardware SMS mode).

Christ, what an awful controller. I'd forgotten quite how bad the d-pad was. Authentic experience be damned, I'll use MD controllers in all but the handful of SMS titles where they cause compatibility issues (which sadly includes Penguin Land and Wonderboy in Monster Land).

You guys.....

I dont have the space or the time to buy a mega drive but I really bloody want to now. Emulation might have to be the answer, but thats not as fun.

I'm searching eBay as we speak. I'm going to go for a US or JAP console for 60hz goodness with an Everdrive and RGB cable. I will never play it but Sonic 1 every now and then never hurt anyone. Does anyone have a Megadrive they want to part with?

I spent me entire youth, well until the Saturn came out, playing the console. I also still have the mega CD and I had a 32X.

Getting another would just be admitting I've failed in my struggle to not collect stuff anymore.

As it is I have a box in the loft full of PS2 stuff that I can't bring myself to get rid of.

I like the MS controller myself, but of course, nostalgia can be blinding sometimes. Just wouldn't feel right to me otherwise.

I may have been unfair - my revulsion last night was based on handling it dry rather than wired up to the console. Gave it a spin with Wonderboy in Monster Land tonight. It's okay - the buttons aren't bad and the pad's good at left/right, but it's a bit too easy to accidentally trigger up or down when changing from left to right, due to the lack of any raised cross.

As down triggers your secondary weapon, this left my Wonderboy incontinently dribbling bombs during a boss fight, and looking rather like he missed his nappy from the arcade version.

I'd forgotten how much I loved Wonderboy, mind. Would like to do a series playthrough at some point.

A keep a Master System pad with my Mega Drive stuff permenently due to Wonder Boy in Monsterland. It's easily a personal top 5 MS game (shuffling around with Alex Kidd in Miracle World) and something I whizz through relatively frequently on real hardware and via 3DS emulation.

After all these years I've come to the conclusion that I can live without the original arcade game and the PC Engine port / reskin as they're just too stressful and brutal to get through, and I just don't find myself being compelled to fire 'em up (even though I played the arcade and MS one pretty much concurrently as a kid). The Master System port is obviously a lot easier but its also a lot prettier and has a charm and style that I don't think I'll ever tire of - if the last quarter of a century is anything to go by.

I've been to London a couple of times recently and hung out with my bros (who btw have a retro gaming YouTube channel) and we always have grand plans about what we'll play, but inevitably cannot decide on one together and default back to Micro Machines 96 on the MD. Perfect.

Actually want an invite.

Someone had pictures of the unit on twitter and it appeared to be composite only sadly, no HDMI or RGB Scart support even.

Mega Drive fans may want to have a watch of our new video as we look at the issues you can face with certain games when using a Bios Mega Drive over a non bios unit (won't run some games) we also look at the control problems with the six button controller on certain games and how to fix them. A Game Genie is also a Mega Drive owner's best friend for solving the bios problem.

I feel like I might be missing something obvious here but aren't scanlines a function of the TV, not the Mega Drive?

Correct, they're just a natural byproduct of 240/288p on a CRT.

Although if this thing had supplied HDMI out, then it's likely some sort of scanline emulation might have been added.
