How is this going? I've been trying to get Saturn emulation working properly - by which I mean up scaling so it doesn't look like ass - but nothing seems to work. Are you running upscaled and, if so, what emulator are you using and what settings? It's surprisingly hard to find any help for this via Google.

I probably can't help because as a man on a Game Gear binge at the moment I'm not too fussy about things looking like ass... I'm using Beetle through RetroArch because it was the easiest thing to get working on an M1 Mac and to haven't really investigated any of the eye-candy.

Some guys are doing a proper remake of Sunset Riders too. The difference is insane! Back in the day you just assumed that devs did what needed to be done to fit into the system but these remakes show that’s actually not true.

Disclaimer: not watched the video but I think some 16-bit ports were massively hampered by the allocated cartridge size. Some of the people remaking games aren't confined to rom sizes.

I don’t think it mentions any sizes in the video so you’re right, this thing might be 100 meg in size.

The term ‘hampered’ is an interesting one though…Cart sizes ranged from 4 meg to 32 meg afaik, so there was scope to make carts bigger in order to deliver a higher quality. Pretty sure the Sunset Riders cart is 4 meg so they made a financial decision to go with the cheapest option possible.

I think it would actually be nice to see what could have been done better within the confines of 4 meg as well as upping it and seeing what realistically could have been delivered if the money had been put in.

I do find it interesting. The idea that potentially the MD was hard done by in console wars, which were caused by constraints outside of the machine itself.

Oh yeah, it was almost entirely a cost issue. Sometimes a developer would be working to 8 megs then be told halfway through that it would have to fit in 4.

Same issue beset SNES developers though. It was about money rather than platform. I think in a lot of instances a game would have the same cart size on both SNES and MD.

Sorry if this is the wrong place but is there anywhere other than Amazon that are taking preorders for the Megadrive/Genesis Mini 2 for delivery in the UK?

It is available for preorder on Amazon.com but won't ship to the UK.

I think that as it hasn't been announced yet for europe probably means it isn't coming out in October over here.

You can preorder the Japanese version on Amazon Japan, but if you try and pre order the Genesis Mini 2 it won't let you if you are outside the US.

Personally i'm going for a Japanese one anyway as it looks way nicer than the all black Genesis 2. That red cart slot and big MD2 logo is pukka. That said I think the black and red Mega Drive II trumps them all, so a shame there won't be a Euro version this time around.

The main dev behind Final Fight Ultimate got the game using the SSF2 mapper, expanding the regular cartridge 32mb limit to 40mb, but it will probably exceed that limit and end up using a custom mapper like the one used on Demons of Asteborg (giving it Neo Geo type Mega Power).

Hearing those Final Fight tunes arranged for MD audio hardware is a trip.

Street Fighter 2: Super Chamionship Edition had a 24meg cart, even back before the 'blue spine' days, but I guess they knew it was going to sell by the bucket load. I remember reading (possibly in the Mean Machines review) that the fantastic MD version of Mercs was supposed to support two players but they just couldn't fit it on the cart. Interestingly, they did add in the 'original' mode though, which was much better as a single player campaign and added longevity. I guess it was a case of either/or and they decided to go for the improved single player experience. That was a 4 meg cart, I believe.

cartridge sizes crippled megadrive games, all about cost cutting.

incredibly neo geo games wasted cart size, just so they could put megapower and gigapower on the box giving the impression that it was a much bigger game than it was.

I don't suppose you have a link to it at all?  It doesn't appear to be listed

To be fair ROM chips were super expensive and skilled devs made every byte of those tiny memory allocations count.

The vast majority of classic MD games were about 8mb / 1MB in size. Many greats were only 4mb / 512K.

Super Mario World was only 4mb / 512K and of course could technically have been an unholy mega monster of a game had it had '64 Mega Power' to play around with..but it wasn't crippled. It could never have enjoyed a large ROM size owing to Nintendo needing it to be more commercially viable at the time.

To be honest, I think they made the right decision to keep the costs down. 16bit console games are just about my favourite period of games and many of the ones mentioned are absolutely brilliant games. It's fun to see what can be done with Ghouls and Ghosts or Sunset Riders on the humble Megadrive when rom sizes aren't a factor, but the released versions were fantastic and still hold up really well as far as I'm concerned.

Sorry, final question on the Megadrive Mini 2

Does anyone know if it will have english language options for the system and games?

The japanese MD Mini 1 did so i'm sure it'll be the same for the games that support english. For the japan only titles like the quiz games the menus were in english but the in game text was still japanese.

Wiz n Liz was a lot of fun. Not one I bothered with until a friend sold his Mega Drive to a kid down my street and I played a few of his games before I handed it over. It was one of the first games I hunted down when I started collecting.

All the Pysgnosis games on consoles feel like Amiga ports. Even the ones that aren't.

I understand that the Mega Drive/Genesis got Amiga games the SNES didn't even get because the Mega Drive and Amiga share the same processor I believe, making it easier to port to. Other quirky games like Cosmic Spacehead and Theme Park might be my favorites.

I don't know if anyone on here makes music or would be interested themselves but I've just discovered the ludicrous treasure trove of interviews that is the Red Bull Music Academy channel and was so excited by this one I had to let internet strangers know at least.
