I've done 2 squad battles, first impressions are pretty good. The net makes a fucking great sound when you score.

 

Best players that I've got so far are Vela and De Paul, nothing too special but enough to get started with.

Every year I try fifa again and every year it feels more alien to me. The intro that I am forced to go through involves social media, then running through some streets or something? I skipped as much and as quickly as I could and it still took several minutes to get to the main page. Then on to UT, which is good, as it was 10 years ago, with a few usability tweaks. I still find the squad building aspect interesting. On to the gameplay... I just, well, I just can't work it out. My brain is still playing Fifa 11 I think, which this isn't. 5 losses in a row, against far superior teams, 1 goal scored, about average 5 conceded per game (this is a big contributor to my dislike of the game, either I am the worst player in the world, or the matchmaking just sucks right now but it's been the same story for the last few years). And I'm out, again. Good luck to those who still enjoy it but I've just been completely left behind, in a big way and can't find any joy in it.

This is why I'm on a three year cycle so I don't get burned out playing it every year. Yes I miss out on the early access to the webapp etc but I am ok with that, I don't really play any of the other modes and it is only UT for me. I do enjoy completing the SBC's and weekly challenges.

Fifa, like most competitive online games, has seen the competitive aspect ramped up considerably in the last generation. 
 

Don’t take this the wrong way, but you can’t expect to pick up a game that you haven’t played for 10 years and expect a) the game to be similar and b) for you to be competitive. 
 

if you were good at Fifa 11, I’m sure there are plenty transferable skills, but you’re still gonna need to put effort into learning the quirks of the new game, and committing to improving your own gameplay, 

 

i came back to FIFA 20 Having not played since FIFA 14 and having barely played online. In Fifa 20 I was Division 5 after the entire year. In Fifa 21 I got placed in Division 7 but kept working hard and eventually worked my way up to Division 1. 
 

It still wasn’t a natural progress. I still had to consciously work at it. That’s part of what I do like about FIFA, working on improving myself and my gameplay. The grind of UT alone isn’t enough. 
 

Also, as an aside, you’ve dipped your toe into the water here during the 10 hour early access, which is when the most committed players get stuck in, that’s definitely the “deep end” to re-introduce yourself. 
 

Happy to give some tips / advice and starting points if you decide to persevere!

My team is full strength Serie A (Hernandez and maybe Koulibaly aside), on day 2, which is a bit crazy. And that's before the FIFA Points which come with the ultimate edition. Got lucky finding Lukaku and Hakimi in my early packs.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I'm not interested in enduring the struggle to get back in to it, life is too short (saying that I'd love to have a UT that works for the casual player but in my all my years of playing UT I've never known this to consistently be the case and their business model is targetted toward whales and addicts, not casual players). And by 'since Fifa 11' I didn't literally mean Fifa 11, I've played loads since and was active on here until a few years back. I properly stopped at around 16 I think. My point is that I feel like 11 was the peak for me and I haven't really changed my playing style since then.

 

Leave me to be the old git who goes to the cocktail lounge and complains how it isn't a local serving fosters and with a pool table any more. I'm not interested in learning how a cocktail lounge works but like to dip my head in every now and then to check that it still isn't for me. I'll finish my margarita and get out of your way for another 12 months.

This just from the packs on the Web App through the Ambassador status or something? I had 4 'Gold Players FT 80+ Rare Pack' sitting waiting to open. Best pull was Kovacic of Chelsea. Got Declan Rice twice, which before the ratings announcement would have got me excited, but no in FIFA terms even rated 82 overall he appears to be quite poor.

 

Gonna rake as much coin together as I can before I get to play it on Tuesday then figure out what to build as a starting team from there.

Pretty happy with this squad at an early stage, packed Gomez and Bernardo from the packs I got when getting started on the web app.

Played a couple of hours but the players just don't feel connected to the pitch. It's soooo slidey.

I can't access the transfer market on the app, because fuck me for buying a PS5 instead of an Xbox, so I can't do any SBCs without killing my trial hours. I'm stuck with this until they decide to unlock access for me, it's not too bad for now but I can't see La Liga being much good this year - none of the high rated players actually look any good to play with.

Ive not packed anyone good enough to justify including in even a starting team so just selling everything I can and doing a couple of the starter SBCs.

Mostly just from playing. I've burned through 8 hours on my trial already, so match rewards have pretty much paid for that.

Ah right. I’ve on PS5 so will be cracking into it Tuesday morning. Think I can scrape together a half decent starting 11 for about 10k to see me through some early games but hopefully get something decent in packs and SBCs next week once get started properly.

Other than Manolas for Koulibaly I think I'm pretty happy to run with this for a good while!

 

I'm really enjoying the game so far. It has a very different feel to 21, with skill moves being much, much less effective. Focus is on build up. Switching the play is very effective as well as very satisfying. Goalkeepers do feel a bit too good right now, and as usual there's the make two tackles and still don't win the ball every so often, but other than that I have very few complaints.

So I opened my loyalty / welcome packs and got nothing of mention. Best pull 83 Kjaer, twice. Sold the lot for just under 20k. I then worked on the foundation SBCs on the web app. After each one, I sold everything. Now I’ve completed those besides the two squads that need a lot of loyalty. 
 

ive invested around 50k into fodder and built this team as well.

 

edit: Dembele I got from a gold upgrade! I recommend to to keep discard value common golds and once you know you won’t need them for the foundation SBCs, run them through the gold upgrade instead of selling them.

If I wanted to set up a brand new account (on advice from a few in here back in Fifa 20 days due to believing mine is cursed for packluck), how would I go about that? I didn't plat 21 at all.

Yep. I haven’t pre-ordered and I’m using the trial. They aren’t linked. 
 

What are you not enjoying about the gameplay? I left my thoughts on the beta earlier in the thread, but I also fully expect 2-3 patches within the first few weeks, just like the last few years, the game we play in November won’t resemble this too much tbh.

You can still do this. But, you won’t get any welcome/loyalty packs to start you off. 
 

Just create a fresh profile on your PS4. It will require a new email address (one that’s not already linked to an EA account). Also you won’t be able to play the ten hours early access on this new account without paying for EA Access on that account also.

You should try play squad battles and get used to it.  Chucking yourself into say Rivals at the beginning is not the best way to get used to a game.

Yeah I agree. So many subtle changes, a few days of SB before rivals begins.
