And maybe a Switch port so I can play it on the train, as God intended me to? There's a strong belief amongst the community that there's going to be a 'Crimson' edition to the point where it's an accepted term. Complete game spoilers: Spoiler A lot of the complaints regarding the game's overall pace also make the belief there's a potential new version to come make sense. The points of extreme downtime over the summer, when you're 'dead' and ending on Christmas Eve means that there's plenty of room in the calendar to add or make changes. Hifumi being cut as a playable character also hints at there being more room for party members but also the whole Haru social link could be fixed as she's introduced too late in the game for her to have any meaningful role in the group. As for the Switch... I think it just depends. Persona started on the SNES but made a home on Sony machines because that's where all the JRPGs went. Atlus have published loads of RPG games on Nintendo handhelds so the relationship is there and the Switch is doing gangbusters in Japan so... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 10 hours ago, Majora said: Persona 5 was the first time I tried the series and I lasted about 40 hours before I had had my fill. There was actually a hell of a lot I liked about the game but there's simply no denying that you will spend a LOT of time watching cutscenes. If I sat down with the game for, say, two hours after work, there was no guarantee I would actually get to play it in any meaningful sense and it caused me to slowly drift away. You do kinda need to be prepared for long, long conversations and periods of time where you don't really get to do anything. I think with Persona, you have to have some investment in the story to really enjoy it. The characters and social links are a big part of what makes the series stand out and if you don't enjoy it, you won't have a good time. It's slightly different in that you have to manage your time in game so the dungeon crawling and grinding isn't the only mechanic for progression. It's why I still prefer P4G, because I enjoyed those characters and that setting a lot more. Objectively there might not be too much between the games but when almost half the game is spending time with party members and NPCs, with those conversations you mention, if it doesn't click for you then the grind feels twice as long. 10 hours ago, Jamie John said: P4G is far and away the better game. 5 was good, but at least 30 hours too long. I've got no desire to return to it. P4G, meanwhile, was the first JRPG I'd completed and enjoyed all the way through since FFIX. Pick it up on the Vita, if you have one. I've seen a lot of people say 5 was too long, but I think if it was paced better then people wouldn't feel the length () as much. Complete game spoilers for both P4G and P5: Spoiler For NG+, I clocked similar play times for both games and almost platinumed both (missed a fucking book in P4G) so I think it's a good sign that both games are roughly similar in terms of length. P4G having the rest of the year plus the Marie plot makes a big difference, but already by then you've spent a lot of time as a group and you know the antagonist. P5 tries to get you invested in the whole Shido thing but the Akechi twist seems half baked and honestly he should've joined earlier to make it less obvious/more of a blow to you. P5 is great in many ways, the battles are so fucking slick and movement feels a lot better. The ship dungeon is horrific padding and given how late in the game it is, it probably broke more than it should've. 1 hour ago, Qazimod said: This is just my opinion rather than a thing that’s actually happening but I get the feeling that most Persona stuff is finding a home on Sony machines whilst Nintendo gets the mainline SMT stuff (at the same time the Persona Q sequel seems to be P5-themed and the original PQ is a 3DS exclusive, so again take my speculation with a huge pinch of salt.) Personally I’d love to see a second home console release in the style of P3 FES with remixed events. Or just a release with alternative objectives that don’t overstay their welcome. I read this as "a second home console release of P3 FES" and was about to heavily agree. I still can't believe they're making all these HD models of Persona 3 for the dancing game and they're not using them for a full remake. I think we'll end up seeing mainline Persona games on Switch, partly because it's doing too well in Japan and partly because releasing P5C (and P3 and P4 *cough) gives them more time to work on Persona 6... Jamie John
@SMD I agree with you about the combat; even if it is just a glorified rock, paper, scissors, it's the best part of the game. Flooring an entire squad of enemies with one attack remains immensely satisfying, from the tenth hour to the hundredth, but then the same was true of P4G, and that had better pacing, and more empathetic characters, to boot. It's still a good game, obviously - I wouldn't have spent 100 hours of my life playing it, otherwise - but it's not the landmark that P4G was. Majora
I probably wouldn't have minded the extremely long conversations so much if half of them weren't repeating things you already knew or had already been well established on multiple prior occasions. I know, it's a Japanese thing, but it doesn't make it any less grating. If all that graphics novel stuff felt essential maybe I could have dealt with the length but lots of it was repetition or treading water. I did like the characters, I didn't find them the issue per se.

Maybe it's my memory playing tricks on me but I'm 40 hours in now and can't remember either 3 or 4 being quite as eager to constantly go over old ground as this one. It seems like they designed it from the ground up so you could leave it for a while then come back and not be lost (even down to the 'take your time' bit on the loading screens) but I'm not sure they quite got the balance right. I think I would've preferred it if they'd expanded the plot synopses in the menu and drawn more attention to them for those that might need it. I'm still loving the game at this point though, having just done the third palace. Unless it falls apart badly I'd struggle to choose between it and the previous two games. They feel like different flavours of the same lovely ice cream to me.

I don't want to go back to telling Stupei to heal me and he throws out a defence buff instead of using Medicine EDIT: Yes, I was also able to finish the game without direct commands via the two PS2 releases, so I can appreciate the “well I was able to deal with it” responses... I’m just saying that between the two options I’d prefer the game to have faith in my own decision making

I finished 3 FES and 4 this year, both were the PS2 versions, but the different control schemes were OK. I played 4 first and was used to controlling all the moves, but the AI in 3 FES was pretty good and the fights a little more forgiving, I didn't have an issue with not being able to give direct commands. Rsdio
Yeah, I played probably 100 hours of FES and I think I maybe cursed the AI twice. I can appreciate that it happening at the wrong time would be super annoying but I was expecting it to be much more of an issue given how much I'd read about it beforehand. It'd obviously be better if it wasn't an issue at all, mind.

Ferine
I've been house sitting for the last week with little else to do in the evening, so I've finally sunk a bunch of time into this. Overall I'm really enjoying it and feel it betters P4 in several ways; having crafted dungeons is a big improvement, many of the new combat mechanics are excellent and the characters are a bit less oblivious. Generally I'm liking the cast, although I could do without some of the ways the game treats Ann: I don't have much tolerance for "fanservice" at the best of times, but it seems especially distasteful given her story. Oh, and the less said about the game's gay caricatures the better. Still, I appreciate the breadth of character tales the game attempts to tell, even though it does trip flat-faced over tropes fairly frequently. Oh, one thing that has stuck out at me is the odd translation. Most of it is fine, but it's not uncommon for there to be some really clunky sentences featuring oddly formal word choices or wildly shifting tense; this seems especially true of the beginning, but perhaps I simply started to tune it out. It's especially strange given that the awkwardness tends to rear its head during voiced, critical path dialogue, which you'd expect to have had an additional pass. kensei
So I've just hit the first link I can turn to a romance, and considering whether or not to go the man whore route. If it's like Persona 3 where I could get into a romantic relationship with anyone of the opposite sex, it's gonna to get creepy... Morally I want to stick with one, but I have time for doing this exactly once (probably really 0.5 times) so it's bringing out my worst follow a guide, min/max everything side. Decisions...
