Next-Gen Headset Recommendations

Recommended Posts

I know we have dedicated next-gen threads, but I started a fresh one for this because at this point in the cycle any specific discussions will end up buried under the avalanche of ZOMG MY STATUS JUST CHANGED TO PUTTING STAMPS ON THE PARCEL!!!

The headset that comes with the PS4 looks like it was made by Blue Peter, the Xbone headset looks better but I up imagine a lot will want to replace with their own.

What recommendations do people have for decent headsets to use with next-gen. I understand that the PS4 will use pretty much any headset as long as it has the right jack. Anyone have any recommendations for a decent over-one-ear + mic model (as I still want to hear the game audio through the TV)?

I'm looking for exactly the same. Lots of them seem to be those massive surround sound over ear headpones with a big microphone, I just want one similar to what comes with the PS4 except not shit (I've not actually used the bundled one, just going by the reports of those that have).

I found a sealed xbox live wired headset in a drawer the other day, why I have it I've no idea but I'm wondering if just using a jack adaptor would be enough since it was good enough for me on the 360.

This reddit post has a google doc with reports of working headsets, still lots of them seem to be of the big wireless surround sound type.

I may just buy another pair of Samsung Galaxy ones if they do indeed work.

I've been wondering if I could just use my Xbox headset as I have a decent Plantronics wired one that I'd quite like to keep using. Amazingly Google has been no help, I thought loads of people in the US would have tried to use 360 headsets on PS4 with a jack.

I did see someone NeoGAF recommend this after doing a bit of a search. Not out in the UK until the launch day of the PS4 though.

When I picked up my PS4 I saw that Game were selling these, made by a company called Rocketfish and officially licensed by Sony.

To be honest the bundled headset isn't as terrible as I feared after using it for a multiplayer party last night. But I'd still prefer an Xbox 360 style headset I think, at the moment it's a toss up between this and the Turtle Beach one for me, so I'd be interested in the views if anyone here has tried either.

I asked something similar in ATF, i want a full on headset with sound and chat - ideally wireless to use on PS4 & PS3.

I was set on a turtlebeach, either the made for PS4 PX4 or the older PX5 but then read something that says they arent 'proper' surround like some so give pseudo surround to approximate the position of stuff - how does this fare in use?

Are there other sets that are better - i have seen and read about Astro being the top choice but they appear to not offer a wireless option?

Has anyone got their Turtle Beaches working with the PS4 yet?

I have some xp500s and thought they'd be fine with a chat cable and a 2.5mm to 3.5mm jack but the PS4 doesn't recognise them at all.

Edit: appears that they're selling a compatible cable:

That cable looks like what I need but I can't seem to buy it from there. Not sure why it's different to any other adapter like they claim.

Yeah, Turtle Beach hasn't announced when it'll sell (or even ship) the adaptor over here, sadly.

At the moment I'm using the PlayStation 4 camera to pick up my voice, and my X41s for surround sound and chat audio.

I haven't tried it in game yet, but I sent a voice message to elmo, and it sounded decent, yeah.

I'll let you know what it's like when I play next.

A mate's using it and it's very clear but you just have the issue of echo from my voice coming out his TV and going back in his mic. Not sure if there's an echo cancellation feature he's missed.

There are certainly a few OS glitches that they need to iron out. I hope that's what it is.

Somebody asked his earlier but has anybody with the camera tried using it for chat yet and if so how does it work?

If it works well like Kinnect apparently does then I don't have to worry about headsets. I can just use my existing gaming headphones and use the camera as the mic.

Yep, I've been using the camera in the absence of bluetooth headset support (in conjunction with my Turtle Beach XP500s) and it works pretty well with headphones as it obviously doesnt pick up any sound from the TV (as its obviously muted), so it only has to pick up my voice. Its pretty sensitive too.

I had been using the Vita earbuds but having them in for an extended period kind aches so it has been nice to go fully wireless again.

Had been having problems with really bad echo when using the earbuds which looks like its quite a common problem when using them. Hopefully thats something that can be patched.

Ah, I get you. I shouldn't have that issue as I'm hoping I can get all game and chat audio coming through my headphones, with the TV on mute. Hopefully that's how it works, anyway.

EDIT: Ah, perfect geldra. Good to hear that it works as I'd hoped.

Yeah it seems to work better than the earbuds certainly, though at times it can sound like you're in a cave but its better than the slightly delayed echo that I got with the earbuds.

Slight caveat however, it could be that the echo is introduced when you have more than two people in a party. Testing the earbuds was with a party of 3, testing the camera mic was with a party of 2.

I'd be interested to know that too having only previously used the A30's with the 360. Do I really have to connect a USB cable from the mix amp to the PS4 for voice chat? If so then its double-annoying that the only USB ports are on the front of the console.

So, seriously, has anyone got any reasonably priced (£30?) Next gen headset recommendations? PC and PS4 priority. My wife is struggling to find me any for Christmas.

The A50's are wireless Shimmy

I found them, they were on sale yesterday with 25% off but i just couldn't hit the buy button - some issues with ps4 chat apparently but i'm still a little wary of having to swap between amp and headset to output sound!

I tend to watch stuff via netflix, youtube and 4od etc on the ps3 then jump into a game - i assume on ps4 it will be easy to swap sound output as can be done ingame but on ps3 it sounds like a mare - quit app, navigate xmb to a deep dark hidden under other menus to swap output - load game and notice i've forgotten to turn the mic on etc....

I'm sure it would be fine but £200 is a lot of money if they end up not being used, i'm almost tempted to pick up a cheaper pair that uses optical out just to see how i get along with them with the option to upgrade them later on!

Can anyone recommend ones like the bundled PS4 except with a decent in ear bud?

Not in ear. However there's this...

I'm surprised there are not more available yet. I have PX5s but interestingly the sound is very mixed. Some games it's stuttering or not working at all on and I might ditch them. I am not too bothered about the surround sound tbh.
