Rick and Morty (and not Justin Roiland)

I've gone on and off Rick and Morty throughout the previous few seasons or so. The meta stuff just tired me out after a while and it honestly put me off the show and made it quite hard to care much about watching it. But this last season 6 episode was absolutely brilliant, felt like a real classic. And all it needed was a funny and not compete off the wall concept and the characters acting like themselves.

Spoiler

I think I guessed where the episode was going to go even before "Deux ex husbanda "

But it was even funnier than I expected. The cuts to the kid's faces as everything progressed were incredible.

Also, funny side note: when I started typing "Deus Ex" on my phone, my phone keyboard automatically showed me "husband" as the next word it guessed I wanted to type. That's some scary shit, as I never would have typed "husband" after Deus ex in pretty much any other context I can think of. So I'm assuming the autocorrect has used the internet to get suggestions for its algorithm, and the popularity of Rick and Morty is such that that recent line is now being referenced online a lot?

I just tried it by typing "ex" in this post field, and its suggested next word was "wife".

So although

Spoiler

"deus ex husbanda"

might be a phrase that's never been used before this episode, your text prediction is probably based on the far more common "ex husband". No fancy lookups of search trends required!

Frankly, I'm disgusted that it's not including a hyphen as part of these suggestions.

Also, I liked the episode.

Yeah I watched the previous season for the first time last week, and then went straight into this season and these new episodes have been way better. Much more memorable. The sleep episode was an especially good idea, especially the madness at the end

Re: Jerry

Spoiler

I like that they are kind of evolving him and Beth's characters a bit. It was great to see survivalist Jerry in the alternate timeline where he'd become a badass. And Rick even saves him from *that fate* in this episode, showing he does actually care a tiny bit.

Also its very weird going straight into this season from the last, because Justin Roiland's Rick voice is quite different. Its like he needs a throat sweet or something, Rick sounds rough this season!

I didn’t catch the voice of the guest star, so a meta joke I saw pointed out on Reddit went completely over my head.

Spoiler

The lady boss was Gwyneth Paltrow. At the start of the season Rick pretended to not know who Iron Man was and in this she pretended to not know who Rick was!

Whereas I

totally thought she was supposed to be Paltrow-esque, but missed that she did the voice.

Solid. The self contained nature nicely dodges the question of portals for another week. I wonder if we’re going to see more episodes like this, or if Rick will just fix things on a whim.

Welp.

Nice to see Keith David again, I assume he’s a cert for the Community movie.

It’s on break now until Nov 20th.

Honestly I think the only time I laughed in that episode was

Spoiler

Jerry's file naming convention.

The rest of it felt like it was trying really hard to say nothing at all and have no redeeming qualities. Even by Rick and Morty's more nihilistic tendancies. Rick was just a complete prick, who I thought was being set up for some growth earlier in the season, proves a point, makes comments about virtue signalling that came across weird even though he's an asshole, and the other characters had literally nothing to do, apart from a bit of Jerry.

Really disappointing stuff.

  • 1 month later...

Spoiler

The best bits were the "previously on" sections (especially Jesus'), which had a whiff of interstellar cable about it, the rest was all a bit meta... :D I mean shit.

And storylord was a bad character first time around... he's no Adolflinkler.
