The problem with it being a complete and confusing mess, is I honestly couldn't tell whether they were on the side of the whole speech about writers having to have tortured lives or against it.

 

Because Joseph Campbell was a massively racist and sexist hack to begin with so having a character (Morty) choosing to speak through him just brings up more questions.

 

And the idea that mental health problems and suffering is linked to great art in some way specifically is complete horseshit and very reductive, but again, I can't honestly tell if the show is trying to send that idea up, or if it's embracing it so much so that it's suggesting writers only have a choice between that or "happiness". Which is also nonsense.

 

Just complete tripe any which way I tried to look at it.

In fact knowing that Dan Harmon apparently suffers from alcoholism and depression, it suggest to me that as a writer he's maybe internalised the idea that that suffering has to be in some way the reason he's able to be creative, as that's one way to explain the repeated nihilism in some of the show, the character of Rick, and also the direct conflating suffering with genius in this episode.

 

The psychiatrist insert in previous episodes might be a response to that, but feels more like an acknowledgment of the problem rather than necessarily agreeing with the psychiatrist that the writer's "pain" is a separate thing to their creativity.

 

In fact the more I think about all this stuff being throughout the show the more it seems pretty sad that it can never break out of that cycle and actually have Rick grow a little, because it clearly wants to do more than just have gags and gross out humour in it.

Same here. So much effort put into utter garbage. Maybe there's a bunch of easter eggs or whatever I'm missing that unlocks it's genius but I'm not fussed. Also Previous Leon aka Red Gooblers voice makes my skin crawl.

Well, cutting against the general consensus here, but I loved that. The story train episode is one of my favourites, so seeing more of that was great for me.

I’d disagree on that, I feel like this one demonstrated a much more nuanced and interesting reference than most of their references. Your other points about the problems with him are fair, though I felt like they kind of made a mockery of him as a person despite Harmon’s obvious fondness for his theories.

I thought this weeks was better than last week's but still left me a bit nonplussed. I'm not sure what it is, I'm just not really vibing with this season's second half so far.

 

I watched the anime special episode not long ago and that was great, so something has gone missing somewhere. It might just be because that special had toned down the nihilism a bit, I don't know.

Solid ending to a much improved run over last year. For me the only weak episode was the Storylord sequel.

Christmas/Lore/President/Star Wars is a helluva crutch, but I laughed each time the Noel Carol kicked in. Looking forward to the direction of next season.

Roiland pleaded not guilty in 2020. Roiland and his attorneys didn’t respond to requests for comment. 

 

NBC News obtained the criminal complaint in the case, which charges Roiland, 42, with one felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud and/or deceit. NBC News is the first to report publicly on the case.

 

The complaint states the incident occurred on or about Jan. 19, 2020, against an anonymous Jane Doe who was dating Roiland at the time.

 

According to Orange County Superior Court records, Roiland pleaded not guilty to both charges in October 2020. Since then, the case has been the subject of more than a dozen court hearings, including pre-trial hearings. A trial date is not currently set.

People who can do passable R&M voices must be almost as ubiquitous as people who thought they could do Homer in the '90s. For example, here's a very good Morty at 4:13:

 

 

 

Although if you ask me, they should pick the guy at 6:40. :eyebrows:
