Recently picked this up to play with pals and having a right laugh. Are the season pass(es) worth it?

It's just extra cars and parts. They're in the sales often. I think I got each season for about £8, but I've put the hours in to make it worth it.

(On Xbox one) is it possible/straight-forward to set up private games with a couple of friends on this? tried to have a read around online but looks like the info I'm able to find might be out of date.

You can set up private servers for upto 7 people on PlayStation, I'd be surprised if Xbox was any different

That sucks, thought it would be 60fps but maybe lower resolution. I don't play racing games in 30fps.... just doesn't do it for me.

Let's hope for a next-gen patch rather sooner than later in that case.

Your massive loss.

Yep. Multiplayer > Private (7 player) / Public (14 I think). It’s super easy to do. We often have a group on it.

The damage and destructible environments more than make up for it, you really should try it.

This was my favourite racer of last gen, only thing I don't like are the destruction derby events but everything else is stupidly great fun. Much better game than their previous Flatout series, they've completely nailed that cramped, shunty feel of a grid of bangers all jostling against each other at the start of the race, and whether you get ahead or left behind doesn't always matter as there's always an unpredictable catastrophic crash or collision around every bend where you might edge out in front. The way you can give the AI a good prang for it to never recover is wonderful - no rubber-banding means that playing dirty is a legitimate tactic and can win you the race right at the death.

It's even better on the Series X - load times are massively improved and the frame rate stays stable even when complete carnage is kicking off everywhere.

Brilliant game.

Don't judge them on anything after FlatOut 2. Those games were a different developer. FlatOut 1/2 were amazing, and this is amazing also.

Similarly to Flatout, they've got a sense of vehicle weight in Wreckfest that most other games don't manage, it makes things feel so much more lifelike. I don't enjoy the demolition derbies either but they keep my son happy.

Is there much game to that BeamNG yet? Last time I looked it was more of a demo of damage modelling than anything, but it looks like it could be fun if there's more to it than just watching something crash a few times.

Wreckfest is very similar to the first FlatOut - similar track design, handling and feeling of weight. FlatOut 2 is good but is definitely edging quite heavily towards Burnout-style arcade handling. I don't consider Wreckfest to be an arcade racer at all. I know it's not a sim, but it doesn't feel like your traditional arcade racer either. It's hard to explain, but I feel like arcade racers have an on-rails feeling where everything is nudging you to face forwards, stay on the track and keep your wheels facing downwards. Wreckfest doesn't give a fuck if you're spinning through the forest along three axes.

I always play using the in-car view, then the race ends and the camera pans out to reveal what I've been hobbling around the track with for the final two laps:

The 'Realistic' setting is very liberal with the meaning of the word when your 3 wheeled car is still capable of turning corners. Game's still fucking ace, mind.

lol that’s true but you can’t help but piss yourself laughing sometimes at the state of your/opponent’s car hobbling round the track. No way the cars could continue in reality but great in the game :).

I’ve used the tactic before with a severely damaged car and a lap down to wait for the leader (only car left) to come round and take them out driving the wrong way and then spending several minutes trundling round the last lap to win the race :D

I’m hoping they sort out the crossplay situation at some stage. Crossplay between consoles and console/PC is one thing, but apparently on PC, Steam, Origin and Windows Store clients don’t even play on the same servers? Talk about fragmenting the playerbase.

This is absolutely brilliant.

The kids watched me do the first race on a riding lawn mower, and right at the end of the event some random npc goes flying past the screen. No idea where he came from, we were all howling. I needed an arcade racer but was not expecting to get Destruction Derby thrown in for good measure.

Gamepass FTW. Had looked at WF a few times on PS4 but never really got round to it, but grabbed this a couple of days ago on PC and love it. Only played career mode so far but it’s already quite difficult; if someone gets ahead of the pack it’s really hard to reel them back in. It’s really satisfying weighty and they’ve perfected that feel of being right on the edge of the cars grip, but not overly punishing you when it gives. Really good, not sure I’ll spend much time with it (eg multiplayer) but it’s a nice distraction from MSFS2020/OnAir.

It’s probably the one main criticism I have of the game, in some races if you don’t get a good start (make up a few places going into first corner) you’ll never catch-up and might as well restart if you’re after the win. Don’t get too bogged down going for the win though, just get enough points to progress to begin with and come back to events as you improve.

However, I think this does reduce as you get better at the game plus buying new cars, upgrading and tuning of the car all help. Make sure the suspension matches the track and adjust brakes/diff to give you better turn in. In the longer races carnage is often your friend (and enemy lol) and will take out a lot of your competitors giving you another chance to catch-up.

Not saying you're wrong as things play out randomly in this game, but this is completely the opposite of my experience. I've been at the back of a race, way behind the leader, but some debris on the track, a loss of control, an AI driver messing up, something usually happens to cause carnage out in front allowing me to claw my way up the pack giving the virtual finger at all the piled-up losers as I take the final lap. Very rare to ever quit out of a race for me. You'll always get XP even if you lose.

I did say that but find that the shorter races/tracks e.g. 3 laps don’t really give you that chance to catch-up, especially if you’ve taken a reasonable bump at the beginning. Is there a difficulty level in this, I can’t remember, maybe I need to knock it down a little?
