So almost exactly like Tomb Raider then? Unless you count QTE's as gameplay. :P

In fairness, Broker covered that at the start - a lot of it was to do with increased expectations:

It's very much my opinion but I guess for me the reason I was so disappointed in it is that I had such high expectations for it. I understand that most people got a wonderful experience that they were expecting but for me the weight of my expectations meant that I was much more disappointed than I would otherwise have been, in stark contrast to Tomb Raider which I went into expecting complete shit and found some redeeming features.

I'm sure we can all sympathise with the disappointment of going into a massively praised title only to discover that we enjoy it far less than expected.

The fact that nobody agreed and everyone acted like I was insane every time I criticised it soured me to it more.

The advantage of regularly holding 'wrong' opinions is that I now find this sort of thing amusing rather than frustrating; water off a duck's back. You get used to it.

Yeah, I just found it a bit strange when Tomb Raider is really quite guilty of doing the amazing cutscenes which would be amazing to actually play but instead you're left with a random button to press here and there.

Don't get me wrong I loved Tomb Raider, definitely in my top 10 of the year, but it definitely felt more like watching a movie at times with the odd bit of interaction.

Anyway, at least Infinite isn't in his top 5, so he's alright in my book. ;)

See, I don't agree with pretty much any of those criticisms in Broker's post, but I already covered that in the official thread. Then again, sometimes a game just works for you and sometimes it doesn't. Different strokes and all that. I have that with another much beloved game, GTA V. I just don't get on with it.

Didn't put it in my list of shame though, as I feel games that clearly have a lot of effort poured into them and make millions of players happy don't deserve to be there. Unfinished games, disturning business practices or gamers being complete idiots on the other hand...

Well I expected that from Tomb Raider, played it at a friend's house and wasn't that into it but loved the bow and enjoyed the climbing, especially in the out of the way puzzle areas that were genuinely hard.

I'm sure we can all sympathise with the disappointment of going into a massively praised title only to discover that we enjoy it far less than expected.

I'm aware that its entirely my own fault as well, I should manage my expectations but sometimes that gets on top of me and I go into hype mode, and I can handle that if the game isn't stellar or even has glaring flaws, but I get really down on something when I'm genuinely not into it enough to finish it, especially if its not a long ass RPG type game.

Anyway, at least Infinite isn't in his top 5, so he's alright in my book. ;)

I played about four hours of that and it bored me to death. If I'd been more excited about it I would have probably put it in TLOU's place because I definitely enjoyed it less, but I'm not a massive Bioshock fan so I had lower expectations.

Didn't put it in my list of shame though, as I feel games that clearly have a lot of effort poured into them and make millions of players happy don't deserve to be there. Unfinished games, disturning business practices or gamers being complete idiots on the other hand...

I covered that kind of thing with my other votes, and to be fair I don't think anyone else is going to vote for it, just added something which I felt bad about to my review of the year list post.

I know Wiper and a lot of other people didn't like Bioshock at all. I was the opposite- I totally fell head over heels for it. The setting, the story, the gameplay... okay- the whole bit with the revolutionaries in the middle was confused and the game seem to get stuck on a 'fetch quest' loop for three or four hours, but I found myself totally gripped by whatever the mystery at the centre of it was- listening to the audio logs, trying to piece things together, throwing my own theories in there and then being hit with enough holy shit moments to make my inner Shyamalan happy.

GTA 5 probably would have pipped it, but the stories in that game went nowhere... it had a storming first 2/3s and a game world with a level of detail unlike any other- I spent hours with the radar off, just walking around, being amazed by everything I saw. And State of Decay was pretty much the zombie game I'd been waiting all my life for- perma death for characters, resource management and scavenging, brown trouser moments... excellent. Not finished Last of Us or Juarez yet- they'd probably feature higher if I had.

If you'd told me at the start of the year that my 2 favourite games would be on the Vita I'd have laughed in your face - shame on me. The Vita is gamings best kept secret at the moment especially with my top 2 games.

P4G is the most enjoyable JRPG I've ever played, great combat system, entertaining dungeons and a cast of characters I really grew to care about. The fact I plan on a NG+ run through to do all the social links I missed the 1st time round in a game that I played for 80+ hours says it all.

Tearaway just charmed me and came out of nowhere since I hated LBP with a passion. A wonderfully realised game which uses all of the Vitas functions well without feeling forced.

It's not just Bioshock we disagree on - all of your votes there represent pretty much the anti-me, in terms of what you've enjoyed and what you're looking forward to this year, the only exception being Call of Juarez: Gunslinger which I also enjoyed.

Right, figure I should get my own list up before it's too late. I'm glad I held off until now, as it gave me a chance to play a few games that would have missed my attention otherwise - most notably Gone Home. The only category I haven't altered is the Most Wanted list, as I wanted it to reflect the games I was looking forward to at the very beginning of the year. Which is why a game that is actually now out is still a part of the list.

No comments on my choices here, as I'll be saving those for the actual results thread.

Game of the Year

1. Persona 4: Golden

2. Gone Home

3. Phoenix Wright: Dual Destinies

4. Saints Row IV

5. Fire Emblem: Awakening

6. Thomas Was Alone

7. Gunpoint

8. Shadowrun Returns

9. XCOM: Enemy Within

10. Call of Juarez: Gunslinger

Hall of Shame

1. Misogynist wankers in the games community

2. Bioshock Infinite

3. Microsoft's ambitions

4. Gearbox. Generally.

5. The gaming public continuing to dismiss the Vita

Surprise of the Year

1. Persona 4: Golden managing to somehow be both a JRPG and brilliant.

2. Call of Juarez: Gunslinger being the best shooter of the year

3. Shadow Warrior being the second-best shooter of the year

4. Magic 2014: Duels of the Planeswalkers actually being fun and not ridiculously overpriced

5. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate getting everything that Lords of Shadow proper had got so wrong, right.

Most Wanted Game of 2014

1. The Witcher 3

2. Wasteland 2

3. The Banner Saga

4. Divinity: Original Sin

Ah that's the one, thanks. I was confusing that and the PC one for a goty 2013 thing, for some reason!

haha

Wrong duvet cover choice though man. Never been a huge fan of the NES. Mario and Balloon Fight are decent, but SNES is where they achieved lift off.

And Modern Nintendo is where it's really at. I'd bung 3D World and Pikmin 3 in a top 10 games of all time list.

So obviously game of the year goes to Super Ma...oh. Well it's got to be Grand Th...what? Okay, full disclosure: I still haven't played The Last of Us. But y'know what? I would be amazed if it dislodged Fire Emblem because that game is hundreds of hours worth of pure gaming crack. It has fantastic depth and it's a game that really challenges you while retaining a great sense of fun. It's verging on the perfect turn based strategy game, really. I wish there was some sort of multiplayer mode where you can send a friend turns but honestly it's possibly my only criticism. The graphics and audio are top notch, the 3D mode is a nice touch but the balance of units and maps is brilliant. I utterly love this game and in a year of brilliant titles, the fact it's my game of the year suggests just how awesome it was to hold my attention for so long and still resonate with me.

this'll be easy as i only bought a few games this year. animal crossing took over my life for months, and its only now i've relaxed into playing it for 10 minutes an evening. mario 3d world is brilliantly fun. and gt6 is awesome when i can be bothered to move the steering wheel and actually play it. the only other two games i bought this year were pikmin 3 and final fantasy 14, and i don't want to put them on just as default.

hall of shame is just so obvious as well. just what on earth were microsoft thinking? just bonkers/cunts

most wanted is definitely the new jump vs fighter, but i suspect thats just me.
