RPG Games Available on Steam for Mac

I quit gaming about 5 years ago and now I've decided I fancy playing an RPG for a bit while it's cold and wet outside.
Due to my long gaming hiatus I have no idea what games are any cop these days, do you folks have any recommendations?

I used to love playing Baldurs Gate and Neverwinter Nights, so I'm looking for something like that if such a modern game exists. I'm using a MacBook Air so nothing too system dependent would be best.

Cheers :)

To The Moon is not an RPG (great though it is) - The Banner Saga is brilliant, but nothing like Baldur's Gate - it's a branching, story-led strategy RPG where all exploration is automated/conducted through menus, rather than a traditional RPG like BG. It's utterly brilliant, though, so if you like the sound of what it aims to do you should definitely give it a go :)

(I've no idea how well it will run on a Macbook Air, though - it may be entirely 2D, but it's pushing around a lot of high-resolution sprites at once)

I want a game where you gain xp points and weapons basically, I like stuff like that, does The Banner Saga utilise those aspects? Avadon looks ok too, and it's cheaper :)

Unless you feel you have absolutely played them to death, you could check out the EE versions of both Baldurs Gate games - new NPCs, new items etc.

I think I would like to try something new to be honest, thanks for the tip though!

My recommendations:

-The Banner Saga - unbelievably beautiful strategy RPG

-Shadowrun Returns - you may remember it's prequel from the SNES days. A bit linear, but a great story, tactical turn-based combat and atmospheric isometric graphics

-Legend of Grimrock - remember dungeon master? This is that, only made in 2012 and it's fantastic

-Eschalon Book 1 and Book 2 - do you like your RPG's HARDCORE with lots of freedom and depth? No handholding at all? Don't mind simplistic isometric graphics? Both these games are awesome in that case

Not really - levelling up yes, but no accumulating of loot. Shadowrun Returns is a bit closer to what you're after, but rather short and doesn't really emphasise the levelling/loot side of things.

Did you stop gaming before playing Dragon Age: Origins? Because that really is a modern version of the games you're describing, and bloody good it is too.

The first Witcher is also great and together with its sequel the only 'modern' (as in polygonal and AAA production values) RPGs that actually come close to the depth, ambition and sheer joy of the old classics from the 90s, like the Infinity Engine RPGs. The Witcher 2 is probably too demanding, but the first game is from 2007.

Wow I didn't expect to have so much choice, unfortunately Dragon Age is PC only by the looks of it. Hmm I might buy The Witcher as it looks great and it's cheap, so no real loss if I don't gel with it.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll report back once I've had a play :)

Hey, Dragon Age: Origins belongs in that group! It still has the best combat system of any modern RPG, the plot is suitably epic (and just as pleasingly dumb as the previous Bioware RPGs), and it offers just as many options as the BG games in terms of approach, it just drops the ultra specialising that D&D enforced.

The official site says otherwise...

Hmm I wonder why it isn't showing up through the steam store then.. I'll add the pc version to my wish-list and investigate further once I've had a go on The Witcher :)

EDIT: Ah you can buy though their site.. I stand corrected.

I'll take your word for it, I only ever played the 360 version and that wasn't up to much. I've heard great things about the PC version, but despite buying it on Steam in 2010 I still haven't gotten around to playing it

Dragon Age is available for Mac too, not sure if it works through Steam though. And it's very good.

The PC/Mac version is like a different game. The console port was rather weak.

Aye, DA2 is awful. Compromised in so many ways, the real shame being that the concept it was founded on was brilliant - it just utterly fails to live up to it. Not even Welsh elves were enough to save it :(

And Gerbik! Man! Play the PC version, for fuck's sake! Stick it on hard and revel in the combat, enjoy the epic, shifting storyline and then play it all over again from a different viewpoint. Oh, and download the "The Stone Prisoner" DLC, as it adds one of the best characters to the game (plus a decent adventure getting said character).

  • 2 weeks later...

A little update: played Dragon Age for a week and had to uninstall it as I didn't do any uni work the entire week

Now I remember why I stopped playing games, thanks for all the help though folks!

Tch, uni work is overrated!
