Gunpla: The Thread

Nice work. I've never actually built a Wing Gundam, it's a bit of a blind spot for me. I've built the Deathscythe Hell and the Epyon, but never the actual Wing Gundam. These pictures are tempting me...

Finished building the Yolopark Prime tonight. Things got presence. Its about the same size as a 1/6 figure, but obviously bulkier. Loads of detail. A fairly long build and a lot of that comes from it being a bit weird to put together, with instructions that could probably be improved a little - I've had more times going back and disassembling a few stages than I've had on any model. But at the end of the day, great kit.

Real Grade God Gundam done. Phenomenal kit which was great fun to build and I can't recommend it enough as it can be had for around £35. Posability on this one is some next level stuff.

Bonus point for the wing unit, which is actually a spaceship with a tiny modelled cockpit complete with a canopy that opens.

Started snapping together the God Gundam today. Got through the legs, waist and chest. Kinda taken aback by how small it is - the last couple of RGs I've done have been big mobile suits so doing what is already a small Gundam at that scale is weird.

Looks great though and a good build so far.

One of the really good things about the RG line, that helps that 'high res' feel, is the whole line has an art style which subtly changes and adds details to the basic mobile suit design in an attempt to make the designs look more real life/real world- hence the name.

Which means the RGs often look better than their MG counterparts. To the extent that, a few times recently, Bandai has emulated the RG look on bigger grades, most obviously when they did the RX-78-2 3.0, which is pretty clearly heavily influenced by the RG version. Hence why it looks awesome.

...and done. RG God Gundam snapped together. It's unusual to get to the end of a build and not have weapons fatigue :)

I really like it. It's still super titchy but it has a good look to it, and it's very very very posable.

Already thinking about getting it painted. Fancy doing a brush paint job...

ZA is a very dry reviewer but pretty comprehensive, and gives a good comparison with the previous versions of the Zeta.

This is obviously the best version of it (provided you like the slimmer proportions), but I'm still a little 'bleh' about it. It's probably the most nondescript Ver. Ka kit in years, and it seems they've basically spent all the development time on it trying to square the circle of making a transforming kit that is able to transform, have good articulation in mobile suit mode and be sturdy. Which is fine, but means all the work is hidden and about feel or the transformation, which has always been shit anyway.

I hope the next Ver. Ka has them blow the doors off again.

I like that MGSD Freedom far more than I ever thought I would. Can't wait to see a finished build.

I noticed they announced the next MGSD release yesterday actually

There's also been a Naoki custom Kampfer, which is like... might be up there as the perfect mix of designs for me, as I love Naoki's style and I adore the Kampfer. P Bandai though, fuckers.

Oh man! I haven't built a kit in ages, literally years. This thread has me googling about for a new model to build. They truly are sensational fun to build, I actually get people who visit and see them on the shelves be honestly impressed. Like, "wow, I love your robots". "mecha" I say, " Gunpla to be precise".

The correcting them may be BS but I honestly have had compliments from people who haven't the foggiest in awesome fringe gear.

I've been slowly brush painting the RG God. I've lost the touch with a brush, so it's rougher than I'd like, but not bad. Hope to finish in the next month or so.

In the meantime I've also ordered a few bits of definitely not Gunpla
