Gunpla: The Thread

Incredible. I was thinking of painting mine, and that has settled it!

Clicking on that link shows the madman has wired the whole thing up with LEDs all over the shop.... arms, boosters, feet. Amazeballs

I haven't made a kit for a couple of years now, so last night I started an MG GN-X kit to get back in the swing of things. We've recently had a baby and I play far too much Dark Souls, so I reckon the modelling will be a slow process!

There's a lot of mecha kits out there via Bandai and other companies. Macross, Evanglion, Armored Core and Zone of the Enders all have kits, and that's just scratching the surface.

Shame no kits came out of Pacific Rim, would love Gypsy Danger and Cherno Alpha kits

I likey, very muted compared to usual Gunpla stuff. Is it a High Grade kit ?

Yeah, it's the hg aile strike gundam kit. I'm aiming for a hard sci fi look and wanted to test out my new airbrush by painting white armour (before destroying it with by testing out weathering techniques).

Nice work Cocky. Quick question, are you brushing on acrylics? If so are they standing up to re-posing without scuffing off?

I'm using P3 and vallejo colour, both acrylics, and some paint has come off on the joint sections which I put this down to lack of experience with these type of kits. Next time I won't assemble the model completely before painting.

I nearly picked that up yesterday, went back to the shop today an noticed it had gone. Wondered if it was you that bought it !

If we ordered from Space Oddity to post to the UK, would we get hit for vat/customs/admin charges as its in the EU ?

Built the Exia up. They're great kits to build with minimal clean up needed, and the different colours and types of plastic is leagues ahead of someone like GW. Especially considering its snap fit and articulated.

Not quite sure how I'm going to paint it yet. May prime and pre shade while together, then strip it down into body, legs, head and arms to paint.

Comparison shot with some GW stuff. Riptide - Exia - Broadside - Crisis suit

Black is always tricky. When painting black I normally use a very dark grey (Vallejo Black Grey) and then shade with black/brown or black/blue. In your case the red will probably work out fine.

I'm painting the Exia at the moment. Trying out the method of putting the parts on crocodile clips and airbrushing individually. It's slow work though - prime, wait 24 hours, spray base colour, wait 24 hours, spray gloss varnish, wait 24 hours, oil wash for panel lines, wait 24 hours, matte varnish.....

I think I might invest in some kind of food dehydrater to speed it up !

I think I might give pastels a go for shading, has anyone seen a guide anywhere ? Lots of stuff for pastel weathering, but not found a good guide for shading

Note to self - re-assemble before varnishing and wear latex gloves when doing so.

Parts don't go so well back together with a layer of varnish, and even clear fingers leave marks every where on a gloss varnish

Lockon Stratos ! HG Dynames built up while I'm waiting for various paints/varnishes to dry on the Exia.

I've been watching Gundam 00 on YouTube, and really enjoying it.

Also come across www.modelers-g.jp which appears to be a Japanese Gunpla Cool Mini Or Not

Full Vernon is coming on well! Did some panel lining today with my 0.05 pen. Good, but some of the lines could do with widening and deepening to make them more accessible, so I've ordered a scribing tool for my next build.

Edit: hah, didn't even realise you could get 0.03 pens. Ordered!

Nice one Trebs, still one of my fave kits and one I go back to to piss about with posing all the time.

I've been down the gaming equivalent of a k-hole that is Dark Souls 2 for the past few months so I've not touched any Gundamz.

Need to tidy up that Deathscythe Hell, do the decals then pick another kit from my pile of shame. Sunday is free so let's get on it!

Yah I went back and edited my post upon finding that myself, not in a position to buy anything right now but its a good job I have alot of restraint because that "Add to Cart" button is incredibly tempting!
