Haha, awesome :). Can't quite believe it's coming out tomorrow... er... or today for some people :). Hope you guys all have a rocking time with your new headsets; despite pulling the thing on each and every day for the past however long, the cool factor never wore off for me.

Although I have the game, my headset won't be delivered until tomorrow ...

The limitations of VR in relation to motion sickness are really such a shame. It sounds like it's actually going to be quite a limited piece of technology in terms of the games that will work well in it?

I mean, I thought it'd be ideally suited to 'walking simulator' games. Stuff like Everybody's Gone To The Rapture or Gone Home seem like they'd be even better and more immersive if you could just potter around in VR. But it seems like that's almost impossible if even just walking slowly around will induce motion sickness.

(Caveat: I have absolutely no experience with VR) I can't imagine this will be the case for very long.  People will acclimatize to stuff like this with a bit of time.

PARADIGM SHIFT

I've a pal who works with tech and has all the VR headsets, he's not complained about motion sickness at all.

PSVR as rated by Metacritic on launch eve.

Rez Infinite - 89

Thumper - 81

RIGS - 79

Battlezone - 74

Batman: Arkham VR - 71

Until Dawn: Rush of Blood - 69

Tumble VR - 69

DriveClub VR - 65

PlayStation VR Worlds - 56

Others like SuperHyperCube don't have enough reviews for a Metascore yet, apparently.

This exactly. I'm a Rift owner and previously a DK1 owner. At first I'd get sick relatively easily in all kinds of things. Now I can do pretty much anything I want and never get sick. The only time I get a telltale sign is if something goes wrong software wise such as tracking jumping (or as I've had on a couple of occasions tracking being back to front which is instant barf city). However, in these very rare instances, I close my eyes immediately and take the headset off.

The absolute key to VR sickness is not to try and push through it, that is a nightmare. Remember you can close your eyes and if you start feeling woozy back away. Slow and gentle wins the day.

Hard to believe these companies have spent so much money on tech that in most traditional gaming genres will make you sick. There has to be a way around it on the horizon, surely?

That's a bit like saying "why haven't Ford found a cure for car sickness yet?". Some people are just pussies.

Is it a question of acclimatisation at all? Are there people who got motion sick to begin with, but are now OK? Or is it the case that once you're motion sick in a certain type of game, that's it forever?

As for RIGS, I'll play the demo and then decide. I hope the demo has enough gameplay in it to form a solid impression.

Why such low scores for drive club? Surely it's just DC in VR?

I think it's going to be very interesting to read some of the news headlines over the coming days / weeks with the launch of PSVR.

I feel that with the Rift many people had devkits previously so knew what they were getting into / were acclimatised already. With the Vive, for the Roomscale stuff then there is generally a lot less chance of sickness as you are either teleporting or using your own space to walk around. Artificial locomotion is a killer for sure until you've found your VR legs and even then some people can't get past it.

I would recommend ideally sticking with cockpit games initially or games that don't have a lot of movement, but essentially avoid first person walking. When I first tried driving games I would be fine until I eithe went in reverse (very odd feeling) or spun out. Now all of that is gone, I just occasionally get the drop in stomach if going over the top of a hill at high speed which is just wonderful.

The other thing I think will cause this to be headline grabbing is a lot of kids will no doubt get to try it  /use it on a regular basis, which again I feel hasn't been that prevelant with the Rift and Vive. And it certainly makes for a better headline with kids vomitting instead of adults.

I do hope that you all find your VR legs quickly though, it's an incredible place to be. I'm currently typing this in my virtual penthouse, then I'm going to dip into my virtual full size pinball collection, before playin a bit of Ghost Squad on the Wii in 3D on my virtual 20 foot screen. And then I guess I should do some work. Bugger.

Interesting both Rez and Thumper have the best scores, considering neither are bona-fide VR games.

It IS good to see Battlezone up there though, because it does seem to be a reasonable idea well executed.

I do hope that, much like the beginning of the PS1 back in the 1990's there will be a glut of ideas created, scattergun approach, to see what new ideas stick - and then we work from there.

Traditional gaming tropes will not necessarily fit this new mould, the same way SNES/MD games didn't fit the PS1/Saturn Mould.  The early PS1 games attempted a number of approaches before these new ideas took root.  See Jumping Flash as an idea of moving around a 3D space early-on...

I imagine plenty of the games we experience in the next few years will be nothing but novelty in times to come...

Anyway, I'm waxing lyrical here.  So I'll stop.

For me, the best experiences on the Rift initially were things not designed for VR from the ground up. Project Cars, Elite, Euro Truck 2, Dirt Rally 2, Pinball FX etc. The great news is that the indie scene is almost out of control with content on the PC. Small experiences mostly, some work, lot's don't, occasionally there is genius. This stuff is so thick and fast thanks to Unity and Unreal being available for all....that finding out what works and what doesn't I think is happening really quickly.

And that can only be a good thing. What we really need though is for devs to truly start thinking outside of the box, I have no fear that will come, but it may take a while.

It's a mixture of both, for sure. However I think (from experience and reading others) that a lot of people find their legs. With me it was often just taking a break for a few days and I would come back to something and it wouldn't make me sick any more. Now, nothing does. However there are others who may always get sick, although I think in the minority...and there will be some people who just end up having to avoid certain types of game. In the Vive / Rift community the biggest culprit of VR sickness is first person walking / running / strafing etc. But even then some developers are coming up with systems that seem to work for a lot of people (such as Onward).
