I don't know if anyone noticed, but Sony are giving PS Plus subscribers 3 PSVR games in November to celebrate 5 years of PSVR. No news on what they are yet.

Also - is it out of stock everywhere? A work colleague of mine is trying to get one for his son's Christmas present and can't find one anywhere (neither can I.)

As someone who recently got PS VR I can all but guarantee it's *looks at shelf*  Blood and Truth, Super Stardust and Astro Bot.

Finally picked up a cheap second Move controllers the other day, mainly as I've had the itch to play Skyrim VR for some reason. Grabbed that from CEX for £12 and hoping to get stuck in soon.

What have I missed out on that needs the Move controllers?

Top of my list are Blood & Truth and Beat Saber.

I'd add Superhot VR and Pistol Whip to that

With the newer variant, I think you would get 4K and HDR, but lose the HDMI 2.1 features (several of which PS5 doesn't support yet anyway, like VRR) by keeping the PSVR box plugged in. Not entirely sure.

But the PS4 Pro could do 4K and you could leave that connected to the newer PSVR breakout box at all times. The older V1 box, not so much.

Never had a problem with my V1 PSVR outputting/passing 4K from my PS4 Pro so I doubt it's any different for PS5. Now V1, V1 can't pass HDR. I did the whole convoluted HDMI switch with my Pro and TV and it worked well. Could have everything hooked up nice to my old TV and PS4.

Things have changed now with regards to the HDMI switch as I have a PS5 and that adapter off of Sony. Will have to set it up and see if the HDMI switch still allows me to have it all hooked up for PS5 HDR with a V1 PSVR or whether I have to go around the back of the TV and switch cables if I want to use it. Still pissed that they released V1 at the same time everyone was making a proper push toward HDR.

Is it right that the PSVR video processing doohickey (the one that sits between the TV and the console) doesn’t output at 4K, and you’d be a fucking idiot to connect it up to your PS5?

Didn't know this, will remember that when I get a "PS5" PS5 game.

you “only” lose HDR on the v1 psvr. v2 is fine

The v1 box does 4k but not hdr , the v2 box does both .

I think the point of difference on the v2 breakout box is that it's only HDMI 2.0(a?) and not HDMI 2.1.

Which, I think, means it's very happy doing 4K/60/HDR. But that things like 4K/120, Auto Low Latency Mode, or VRR (PS5 doesn't yet support VRR anyway) and maybe a couple of other features don't passthrough. Unless those things are important to you, I'd imagine it's fine for 99% of use to leave it in place.

This has been quite helpful for me as a thought exercise - I don't currently have mine connected because I feared the incompatibilities, and now I think I've suggested to myself that it'll be fine. I don't really use 120fps - can't tell the difference.

Exactly, ive had mine hooked up to the PS5 and 4k HDR passes through fine but no 120hz - VRR would be a huge loss but given Sony wont be releasing that for a loooong time its not an issue at the moment.

I was thinking about having to get some sort of splitter to get around it but that’s excessive for the very limited times id notice missing features.

I got Wipeout as a pack in a few years ago when I bought the thing, and it’s been one of the go to games I use to demo VR  for family and such.

It was only this week I realised it’s a fully functional game in its own right and the VR is optional.

Anyone else picked up their headset recently to find the black rubber on the headband is coming off?

Just me?

had to peel it all off in the end.

Dropping that shit everywhere otherwise.

Not recently, started months and months ago. I didn’t bother peeling it off, but I do have to check for flakes on my forehead after a session.

Yes, I noticed this recently. I hate that disgusting shit they use to coat things as it always seems to flake off after a few years on headphones etc too and makes a total mess when it does.

I finally borrowed a PSVR headset & camera to see what the fuss was about.

Plugged it into my PS5. First impressions are that the cabling, expansion boxes etc is a right old tangle of spaghetti.

Obviously it's needed but it feels like a messy afterthought.

I didn't realise I'd need a dualshock so had to dig out a PS4 one and put it on charge. Started off trying to play astrobot with my dualsense but that wasn't happening.

Went through a couple of games and the first that worked with a dualsense was wipeout. Big mistake - 15 seconds in and I'm feeling queasy. At this point I'm thinking is this really what VR is like?

Sacked that off and tried Star Wars Squadrons. It's not the best game but this is better as it's not quite as fast paced, being in the cockpit of an X-Wing is impressive. I'm now genuinely shocked at how well this previous gen technology works.

After a bit of relatively slow flying around, my dualshock finally had some charge in it. Fired up Astrobot and went from impressed by the technology to impressed by everything about it. What an absolute showpiece for Sony and VR, I can see why people said it was game of the year.

I love Astrobot, everything else I've tried seems either gimmicky or vomit inducing though. At this point I can't see myself buying a headset or VR being something I'd get my money's worth out of.

What else (that isn't about high speed flying or racing) makes good use of VR and is worth trying out?

Rush of Blood is a good, fun shooter. My eldest loves Job Simulator and its sequel. That bank job/cockney game seems to get a good reception here too.

I've not kept up with PSVR as unfortunately I get the pukes big time :(

A couple of quick suggestions:

Beat Saber is superb, and makes you feel like a jedi. I strike poses and stick my sabres in walls I only need to dodge to make sparks just because it feels good.

The puzzle game Statik was very clever too.

Does Beat Saber need move controllers? I don't have those.

Ace Combat 7 is probably my favourite just as an experience - it’s only three missions and four planes but feels incredible.

Superhot VR is unlike anything I ever played before VR too, but needs Moves.

Polybius hasn’t been mentioned yet either. Or No Man’s Sky. Basically there’s nothing I’ve played in VR that I wouldn’t recommend, but I can’t imagine borrowing a headset would be the way to go, because you do need to acclimatize to using it. Wipeout needs a lot of careful use of the limiters until you are ready (I also had to lean into corners physically to reduce nausea) but once you have got your resistance it’s just phenomenal.
