PlayStation VR

I’ve let my brother take care of my PSVR at the moment - my nephew enjoys using it when he’s over here but since I don’t set it up that much I’ve let them take it home for the moment (my only caveat is that they tell me if/when they get bored of it, so that I can stop them from throwing it out :D )

I told him about the downloadable demo discs and he should already have some compatible PS+ games, so yay. (And maybe it’ll give me an excuse to pick up the next VR hardware in the future… :eyebrows:)

My 1st gen PSVR is really showing it’s age now. Granted I have used it extensively, but the flaking foam coating problem that I have had for ages has now progressed to the actual fabric starting to detach itself from under the plastic.

I have been trying to do the challenge disks in Superhot VR, and I’m old and out of shape so after a few rounds of Hardcore mode today the thing was soaked with sweat. I had to take it off to let it dry out, and noticed that it’s almost at the point of falling apart. Then when I went back to do a couple more rounds after the kids went to sleep I found a nice cluster of dead pixels that weren’t there this afternoon. Shows up as an ugly black splodge in the bright white backgrounds of Superhot (which also means it will screw up Rez Area 5).

I’m considering getting a 2nd gen headset to replace this one. The smart thing would probably be to wait for PSVR2 but if it’s true that older Move supported/camera based games won’t work then that wouldn’t do me any good. (I also expect it will be a good 2 or 3 years after launch before they are in stock and not in the hands of scalpers).

Am I mad for considering replacing it at this stage?

Not sure if this is any good to you but a friend is selling there barely used one. I think its V1.  Not sure what it comes with but I am based in the Manchester and I am sure they only want around £100 for it. Let me know if any good.

If you want a new one I'd say its a bit much to pay at this stage, but it depends how much you want to play the games you have I suppose.

If you're OK with a used one, which I know some people aren't when it comes to VR headsets, Janpara in Nipponbashi usually have some going cheap (they had a bunch for between 6000-10000 yen a couple of months ago). I've seen them for below 10,000 used in good condition in some other used game shops too in the past year or so.

Yeah given how funky mine gets after a Superhot session, going second hand isn’t an easy decision.

Actually when I played it today it turned out those dead pixels must have been only stuck, because they were gone. It’s just the ruined fabric then, which is probably something I can deal with until the launch of PSVR2 (and hopefully if there’s no backwards compatibility the price of these headsets will drop?)

  • 1 month later...

So, I left my job recently and someone kind gave me their PSVR as a leaving gift.

Except one go on Beat Saber in Arcade Club Leeds, I’ve never had a go of VR before.

Ye gods, it’s staggering, isn’t it? Just pootling about with the Astrobot stuff is incredible. I’ve never been that bothered about graphical fidelity, but I cannot get over the patina and subtle textures on some of the astrobot robots, and just how *solid* everything feels.

Star Wars Squadrons is a revelation, too. After having it anyway, but not being wild about it (too fiddly, and weirdly a little dull in single player), you can see that it’s been designed for VR. The lighting and sense of solidity (and again the amazing textures) of your dashboards are just wow.

Is Wipeout as good as I expect it is? I loved it on PS3 and thought it was super slick, so I expect this would be a cracker.

Likewise No Man’s Sky, which I’ve never played. I was tempted to get it for Switch, but I think it’d be another level in VR.

Anything else? Think I’ll have to get Resident Evil 7, though I hear it’s almost unplayably intense.

Sorry if I’m several years late, but I’m just startled by this tech. In my home. Still thinking about how the 8 year old me, playing the Star Wars cabinet in Aberystwyth in the mid-80s, wouldn’t believe how amazing things looked now.

The solidity was the first thing that struck me. I first played an early Oculus demo that just allowed you to wander around a medieval village, and I just spent the short time I had looking around and under things, and was gobsmacked by how different it felt.

Wipeout is fantastic. I can't remember what safety features are on and off as default, but if you can handle it with them all off it is wonderful (I need a few drinks inside me to cope with it, otherwise it is a little overwhelming).

I loved No Man's Sky in it (it is quite lo-res, but I also don't care that much if the experience is better), and they did a very good job making a very complex input scheme work with Move controllers. (Unfortunately it makes my PS4 overheat, so I play it on PC now.)

There are loads of other good games, but the one that always comes back to me is the puzzle game Statik, because the premise is so clever.

Don’t jump in the deep end with Wipeout - I did that and it took me a few days to recover. Keep all the comfort settings on and gradually remove them one by one, otherwise you’ll risk never wanting to try it again. I really felt that bad, and I have had no problem with any other game in VR.

Got wipeout today. Kept all the standard settings, then tried again just with the opened-up cockpit so I could look around. That seems fine, but Lordy me is it fast. Again, proper “this is the future!!!” Vibes in my childlike mind.

And I’m as rubbish at it as I’ve always been. Still ace though.

Anyone predict when they will announce us being able to buy the PSVR2 or pre-order it?

got a feeling it will be made and sold like how the PS5 😐

they should give first dibs to anyone who ordered a psvr dongle for their ps5. Then anyone with a ps5 serial.

Then a random draw, through an unusual retailer, who change their name to something a bit PlayStation/VR

deliver me puns!

Played an hour of RE7 this morning before anyone else got up. BLIMEY. It’s very good, and I jumped out of my skin at one point. Excellent use of sound, too. I’m only ever going to play this game in the morning.

Right at the other end, played an hour of Wipeout this afternoon. I still can’t believe a game like this exists, to be honest. So exhilarating. I have had to narrow the field of vision though or the motion sickness kicks in a mainly on big, sweeping banks.

Wow, though.

You can train yourself on it to eliminate the sick feeling but just go carefully. Best tip I ever got from someone on here is to lean into the corners as though you are on a bike. It really helped.

I've been playing quite a bit of VR lately.  After spending nearly 200 hours in Elden Ring, I jumped into a few other games and nothing clicked with me at all.  But dipping in and out of Beat Saber, Audica, Creed, and a few other classics is just the change of pace I needed.  And it STILL blows me away every single time.  Beat Saber has quite a few new songs and features since I last played it, too.

Seen a few mentions of Statik on this page, and never tried that.  So that's gone on the list.

I've gone back to Beat Saber to throw in a little more exercise each day. Still love it to bits - and still striking poses, and dragging sparks out of the blocks with my sabers as they pass, just because it never gets old.

I'd somehow missed Audica completely. I'm trying not to spend money on games, but it was my birthday a couple of weeks ago, and I didn't get anything new game-wise, so I gave it a punt last night. I've only played a little, but it seems pretty cool. Will give it a proper go tonight. Cheers for bringing it to my attention.

I love Audica so much.  It really ramps up the complexity as it goes, too.  Plus, you can spin and throw the guns with X and Square (I think), which looks cool as fuck.

So many songs on there as well, I've never felt the need to buy any song packs.

Is FRACKED as good as the trailer, I just watched, makes it look.

It’s £20

Another one I'd missed completely. Just watched a review, and whilst it looks ace, it sounds a little limited, and only lasts 2 and a half hours tops. Maybe one for a sale? I'd definitely give it a pop if the price was right though.
