Danganronpa series: Trigger Happy Havoc, Goodbye Despair, Ultra Despair Girls, Killing Harmony...

Recommended Posts

I picked up 1-2 Reload and really enjoyed it. I hadn't even heard of the games and only checked out the reviews because I was curious what it was! Looking forward to the 3rd one later this year.

I'd like to play more games like this - I've already played all the Zero Escape games (and for murder mystery, yes I have played all the Phoenix Wrights) - are there any others I should check out? I like twisty mystery narratives in that Japanesey style, though less a fan of the tedious high school dating wandering and befriending people with gifts to earn their panties...

I did my research into this and it got great reviews in Japan, then again they love this series anyway. Looking forward to it. Can't get much more mental than Danganronpa 2 at least, but from the creator's of Monokuma who knows!

50 quid? You've gotta be joking me. I read an 8/10 review of it the other day. Sounds like everything you'd expect, complete with pervy sexual references throughout. The reviewer said the mysteries were quite easy, which doesn't bode well - the complex murders were one of the big appeals of the older games. Still looking forward to it but at that price I'll rent or wait till the price drops. Can't wait for some more Monokuma!

Wow! What a game. Best handheld game I've played this year. Only other game this year to get me playing in 8 hour sessions was Persona 5.

Just be sure to play the demo before you jump into the main game proper as it unlocks some useful stuff that carries to the main game.

I'd argue that it's more like

David Lynch than Kojima due to the strength of the writing. Quite the open ended ending in that you can take from it what you will.

Kodaka's been posting that he's ready to hand over the reins of the series to someone else.

V3 overall is my least favourite. I did enjoy it and appreciate the difference from the others, but it left me kind of cold.

Took me 42 hrs.

Danganronpa 2 is my favourite. Do wonder if they are going to do any more. Ultra despair girls 2?

Playing Danganronpa V3 now,  I just finished the second case and am in the downtime leading up to another murder, I guess. Loving it so far, I forgot how good the writing and translation is in this series, and the laughs every minute. It's one of the few RPG type games where I actively speak to every character whenever I can, because their dialogue is just so good. The Monokubs are great too!

Character/plot spoilers up to just past case 2:

I thought the twist in the first case was really good, that it's you that is the murderer - never saw that one coming!

I really like the cast in this one, so many of the students are great. Gonta and his insect obsession and childish rage if people don't like bugs. Hirumi with her "NO, It's MAGIC" and Tenko's devotion to her. Angie's mad Atua rantings. Kokichi who wants to make it interesting and lies all the time. Horny Mui who is so offensive but cries like a baby whenever anyone stands up to her. Ryomi who is just a downright cool dude who's lost it all. Kaito who is a solid bro so far. The robot guy who is always being bullied by Kokichi and has useless features. Then you have Monokuma and the Kubs who are just great as usual, especially homicidal Monodam who just recently wrestled control from poor old Monokuma and all the other kubs are terrified of him!

I'm not as bothered about the overall storyline, after the madness of Danganronpa V2 who knows what to expect any more. The first game was the most intriguing in that sense. The cases are decent though. The first one was kinda silly, but the second one was cool, although I had pretty much figured it out before the trial. The new mini games are actually quite good - I really struggle with the block removal one though. The team debate is stupid. The perjury mechanic is a really cool idea, but I wont be trying to get any of the shortcuts because I like seeing how the case unfolds and I don't want to waste time dying repeatedly trying out different lies. I guess that's one for multiple playthroughs, I'll look them up on youtube afterwards. Any of you folks use them?

The casino and gift stuff is still pretty tedious, though I admit I did get a bit addicted to the slot machine yesterday. I found that it gave way better payouts than the games which I can't figure out how to raise above Easy difficulty. The fish one is hard but the others are pretty easy.

I already found one event with one of the special items (that say you should hold onto), where Shuichi and a bunch of others go gambling at the casino. Ryoma was there too so I'm guessing you can't experience that one after Case 2. I have a bunch of other special items but haven't seen their events yet. There's a key for the love hotel but it costs 10,000 coins at the casino, I got up to 8000 using the slots but spent em all. Is it worth it?

Looking forward to seeing who will be "ressurected" in the ritual (that's where I'm up to). The student council has been brainwashed by Angie and they want to ressurect the guy who was murdered first. I'm curious about what his Ultimate was, and whether he will really be alive or not. Poor old Kyoto is sick, and people don't trust Mika, the recently outed Assassin. She seems cool. As for the overall plot, we've seen flashbacks to a funeral for the students, and a meteor fall hitting a city, and we know the maid was the prime minister (lol) trying to stop a disaster. We just uncovered a giant computer which "can create worlds" too. I remember Gonta saying the stars are different here, so my money is on this being another VR simulation, or maybe an evacuation to another planet.  As for the reason for the killing game this time round, I don't know yet. It does have me curious though, especially to see how the older games will tie into this one, and if Hopes Peak is connected in any way.

Good stuff so far, yeah its prety standard Danganronpa, but that just means fun fun fun. I do wish they would mix up the formula a bit, like the first twist was quite good. Maybe the next murder will be cool, I have high hopes for these 3 identical rooms on the new floor, it seems a perfect murder setup to me...

Well, finished this now. Really enjoyed it for the most part, its a great cast. The last part was kind of disappointing, the last few cases were fairly straightforward and I didn't really buy into the drama at the end, but I appreciate how bonkers it all is as usual.

The ending:

Yes, very Kojima. I already knew the creator of the series was taking a break and this seemed quite a self indulgent way to do it, although I like the imagination behind it. I don't really like that it pretty much undermined the whole premise of the whole series and the characters you grow to love though. But of course he still left it open-ended. To me it wasn't a very satisfying ending, but I'll take it. Overall though its still really good, but yes maybe the weakest of the three in overall plot. I never really felt the thrills of big plot twists or tension like I did in the last games.

Still I'm sad to see it go, yes it will continue without the creator but its his sense of humour, characters and imagination that make the series so compelling despite the flaws. He wants to do an adventure, action or RPG game next. Now that both 999 and Danganronpas creators are on a break, where are we gonna get our immersive mystery visual novel games full of twists and turns from? Boohoo.

Also the mining mini game in the casino is amazing.

The series is on sale on PSN at the moment. I've finally taken the plunge on V3 at twelve quid (Vita) and Trigger Happy Havoc is a bargain at £6.49.

(Also Odin Sphere for seven quid)

So far the Monokubs are really creepy and I hate all the characters, but am looking forward to seeing how it all unfolds. I don't think anything in the series will come close to the impact the first game had, though.

You had me excited there, but it's only on sale on the Vita. Loved 1, 2 and the change that was Ultra Despair Girls, and really want v3 for my PS4, but need it to be on sale.

The Monokubs do grow on you, they have some brilliant skits and the way they bounce off Monokuma can be pretty funny.

Yes the character roster is definitely kinda weak in this one, with some really annoying ones. There are a few gems though - I can't really get into my favourites without spoilers as it could give away who dies early on.

PS curious to know how you felt after case 1 is over. Its pretty mad!

Case 1 is a rollercoaster! Definitely starting on a high. And yeah the Monokubs are growing on me, just a little. When Monokuma shows up they stop being quite so irritating.

Back in the swing of it now, looking forward to getting stuck in some more.

Well now I have a Vita, I’m playing v3 and I’ve just finished the first chapter. I almost posted in the thread I started at games astonishing people

Spoiler

That was unreal. A real gut punch. I am really not happy at the moment, but what an amazing opening chapter. I saw it coming as I went through the trial but didn’t believe it could be true, until it was. Not sure I can carry on straight away I need to let that sink in a bit. Huge props to the devs for that, and the bit of mystery added at the end of the chapter.
