The moon was wella bright tonight so I took a quick snap

post-685-1251842144_thumb.jpg

Photo was taken at 1/640th yet still appears a little bright. I should've dropped it even lower

I'd knock it down a lot. Something like f11.. maybe f16. Bracket your shots, use mirror lock up and self timer with a solid tripod. Should get a killer shot out of that.

edit- oh, and manually focus for infinity!

Hmm, I dunno, the distance from the earth to the moon is (about) 401961000km and at f4, that would give a depth-of-field of from 526.3 meter till infinity @ 200mm.

I don't know what you've used for taking that shot, but maybe you've cropped it a lot?

The problem with the moon, imho (and I'm not an expert), is that there's a lot of black stuff around the moon and if you leave your camera on average metering it will take the whole scene in consideration for choosing an exposure. And since there's a lot of black stuff, it will have the overhand in choosing the exposure, making the moon overexposed.

Either use spot metering on the moon or use a high shutter-speed, remember that the moonlight is reflected sunlight, so it's very bright.

Btw, your moon-shot is not overexposed as it is, you can check it in photoshop by making a selection on the moon and checking the histogram. Maybe your monitor is not properly calibrated?

So I went for the Nikon 50mm f/1.4.....wow, its awesome! Only had a quick play around the house and in Manchester where I got it, but I think I'm in love! :D

Nothing great about the pictures, just really happy with the sharpness! :(

Also, really nice work there with the London stuff HaHa, nice angles and compositions!

You're all great. I haven't posted here for ages, but I've been having a peek every now and then, very high level of quality for some 'post stuff' topic on a forum. Love Number 28's last post particularly. I want a telephoto lens, and a better photo editor, then I can envy some of you guys less.

Click for a bigger look. I went panorama crazy when I went to Sardinia, tried a few vertical ones too. Also tried some on a boat, which didn't turn out too well, mostly because it was moving.

Cheers Liamness, but i'd love a telephoto lens too! Shamefully, they were all taken with the same lens. I was just lucky that a fox came to the back window, about 8ft away.

P.S. Great panoramas! No idea how you do them, short of turning it on a tripod, then stitching in photoshop?

I use an app called Calico which is basically Autostitch but for a mac. As long as you stay in vaguely the same place, it'll stitch just fine, takes a minute or so at the most. It's very hands off and automated, it either works brilliantly or (very occasionally) not at all. There's also Hugin which is free, and more flexible, but quite frankly not worth the effort most of the time. I use it when Calico doesn't work.
