What?

Surely you have paid something similar for games in total last year - Or if you have a DVD player, or a Widecreen TV, or any other gadget.

£250 disposable income, or savings is £250 regardless of what you spend it on. Nothing to do with being "overpaid"

Indeed. How much is a portable DVD player? £200? more? Here's one that does that, and plays playstation games. Job done.

Sony are looking long term. They are attempting to create a standard device which will be around for many years. It will play movies, music and 3D games. The fixed nature of the display means if they get it right, games will look good enough that it won't date quickly.

The machine will sell to gadget fans initially at a high (profitable) price. Once the tech gets cheaper they'll drop the price for a mass market.

GBA isn't under threat just yet. In a few years maybe.

£250 from launch until 3-4 months after the first Christmas period. Then £199 for the next 6-9 months, then £129 for the second Christmas period. Then £99 soon after. Then next-gen. It's so predictable.

Get Cash++ from the early adopters. Then charge a lot to those who want to keep up with the trendsetters. Then make it affordable. Then make it "cheap".

I wasn't alive when the Walkman was released (I think :angry: ).

Did it cost the same? (obviously not "the same" but you know what I mean) If so, fairplay to Sony.

What evidence do you have for that then? It is only when things don;t sell that the price drops like a stone. PS2 started out at £299, stayed at that level for an absolute age, then dropped to £199, where it stayted for an even longer age. Then to £179, and so on. It took 3 years for PS2 to reach a level that is still more expensive than Xbox or Cube to reach in 18 months. If it sells, the price will stay high.

Here's my observation then:

If I can get a Game Boy Advance SP for £80, a Compact Flash media player for it for £25, and 512MB Compact Flash card for £55, why should I get a PSP when that setup does everything I want to? You're all saying "Oh, I'll get one!" when there's no official games or screenshots confirmed! All we've seen are concept pictures, one PC dev kit snapshot, and a load of bull about "Oh, it'll have Toy Story graphics, like the PS2 was meant to", and you're all ready to splash out for it right now!

Software and movie formats will be unique to it, but MP3s will be stored on the flash memory cards, transferred from PC via the (hopefully included) handy USB cable thingy. Thing. I think.

Not really - If Sony sell enough, then pubslishers will release titles on the format. Obviously it will require initial agreements for launch - but in the long term, if there are 50 million PSP's out there, it will become essential to release your latest film on UMD as much as it is DVD.

Consider the technology. Consider the market for small things (mobile phones without contracts spring to mind, ipods etc.). Even just consider the *general* console market, without the software subsidy.

Besides, if it's cute enough, loads of us will buy it.

I read an article on a website over the weekend (Eurogamer) where Deering said “that the system would diverge from Sony's traditional console business model by being sold at a price which would make a profit on hardware alone”, and suggested a price "closer to £200 than £300”. Quoted in UK trade paper MCV, Deering said that “the feeling is that this product should generate profit on hardware alone. We want to make it affordable for publishers to produce a wide range of entertainment and so royalties will be lower down in the mix this time round”.

I guess it will sell at whatever price Sony price the item at and perhaps if the unit is *that* good I’ll be only to happy to part with £250 or whatever the unit will cost, but at the same time I am genuinely surprised at the proposed price tag. However, if the software was priced at a suitable level, £19.99 for example, then I’d be a happy bunny. I refused to buy GBA games on principle as I simply didn’t agree with the pricing structure and I hope if royalties are indeed reduced then software will be sold at a sensible price and hats off to Sony *if* they make software more affordable.

You shouldn't.

But then, the PSP is targeted squarely at the main stream, and not the geek.

So infact the reasons that make the extra cost viable (thus making it more than a GBA) are null because nothing but games will actually be supported. In theory meaning fewer people can justify the cost leading to no movies, no music and an expencive 3D GameBoy?

If it all pulls off it will be stunning, no doubt there, but I mean, so much can go wrong...
