The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

I found the Rito boss the toughest out of the 3 I’ve done :(

Still struggling to figure out how to free the Goron stuck in the shrine - presuming it’s something to do with the cannons but haven’t grasped how to move them yet...if you can. Blew up a wooden structure nearby but as far as I could see it didn’t make much difference.

So went back to Gerudo town in the hope of mopping up some side quests in the hope of getting the thunder helm...couldn’t find a tailor to go to the village under construction but sure I’ve done everything except the 8th Heroine (I followed the direction the statues pointed towards until I ended up at a point where it felt 2 were pointing back and forth to each other...headed up the cliff into the highlands but couldn’t find anything) yet still being told I need to resolve all the issues in town.

So did a couple of shrines, finally battled through the wood challenge in Korok forest and answered some riddles but couldn’t answer the last one (was hoping it was Hinox tooth)

I’m convinced it’s something to do with a Linel but I’ve still not defeated one. So went to the colosseum and got roundly trashed many times over after which I’d only managed to plant a few hits on it before being trampled on, hit, burnt and struck by lightning. Buggered if I can figure out how to defeat one, even with 3 divine beast powers and powered up stasis etc. Can’t climb on its back even with stasis - wakes up too soon.

Trotted off instead in the hope of defeating some guardians to get some ancient gear to buy another piece of guardian armour but yet again my laser beam parry is woeful - no idea how Ill ever get close to Huyrule Castle with these skills. :)

I started this a few weeks ago and while I'm enjoying it for the most part I can't help but think that I'm not really playing it right.

So far I've got off of the plateau; been to see the old lady in the village who told me about the Divine Beasts; and got my slate fixed. I've also done a few Shrines in between. I seem to be spending most of my time running away from things though. Even on my way to the village to get my slate fixed there seemed to be more enemies than I could handle.

I don't really know where I'm supposed to get weapons from or if my running away from everything tactic is how you're supposed to play it at the start? I've collected a few swords, axes etc. but I just seem to burn through them when I encounter groups of enemies. I had a guardian sword for a while but that's since broken. I've been in to a few "Test of Strength" Shrines too but I just have warp out of those because there's no way I can defeat the enemies in there.

Do I need to spend more time around Hyrule? I don't really know what to do now, I can either head over to some of the Divine Beasts (which I suspect I'm not ready for) or try to figure out where some of the memories are.

Ah dude you'll kick yourself when you figure out those cannons! :D

I think most people must feel like that initially. I felt like that for a long time and my tactic for most battles was run away while throwing bombs (still is :)) Once you’ve got a few more inventory slots so you’re not left with a branch to fight with it definitely comes a bit less nerve wracking and generally over time with more health slots etc you don’t feel as overwhelmed with encounters.

You’re playing it “right” :)

Thanks for the tips, guys. :D Coming from Mario it is a bit overwhelming! My playtime is quite limited so I want to make sure I'm not wasting my time by missing something obvious!

Discovered my first memory earlier, purely by chance. Was heading to a bridge on my horse when I decided to stop and check out something else that caught my eye. There's so much to look at/do in this game.

My play time is limited too and I think in a weird way this game is perfect for that - no cut scenes or twaddle to get through to get back into the game, can have a quick 30 minute blast, possibly discover a shrine or korok or activate a tower to discover something of interest and then switch it off...so it feels like some progress or archievement has been done every time you play it. Feels very pick up and play.

FFS! Figured it out :) I presumed it wasn’t that as no weapon “connected” with them so presumed they weren’t something interactive! :) Sorted now and on my way up Death Mountain!

in the interim managed to take a few guardians out by stasising them, running in and chopping their legs off which has bought me some time to smash them to pieces. Knackers my guardian armaments but a few more bits towards my guardian armour.

To begin with I targeted Shrines so that I could up my hearts a bit and quickly realised the value of stamina for those mountain climbs.  Somewhere in Hateno there is a collection of trees on the way up to the lab that has a lot of ironshrooms growing there.  I used these a lot to make decent defense boosting meals to see me through some of those shrine combat trials.  I remember being stuck on a major test shrine and literally laughing in the face of a guardian whilst taking it down with my weak and puny weaponry.  I just spammed heeart boosting meals and defensive potions for quite some time.

I think the divine beasts difficulty is all relative as I now have a certain pointy weapon which is quite powerful and lots of stamina to "bullet time" mid air arrow shots with.  The one in Goron City was a pain in the arse for me - so disorientating.

I enjoy parrying their beam attack when I am feeling brave.

I played this for 80 hours or so then got distracted by other games. I recently went back to it and it's still just as marvellous  I've got one divine beast left, but I can't be arsed to take the winged git down. It's just too much fun, it pretty much does everything right.

Collectibles - They're fun.

See that massive thing in the distance? Just climb, fly, bounce, or surf over to it mate. There will be something there.

I'm also pretty certain you could screen shot anywhere, print it out and hang it as an art.

No point to this post but if you haven't played it, get on it.

This is going to sound troll but it’s not. I hate this game. I know I know I have no soul, it’s just weird. The graphics look dated, it’s shit how your weapons break and you have to find your own way everywhere, and it just chucks you right in there

I wanted to like it so much but I can’t. I love every other Zelda. Every time I turn it on I just get frustrated or lost then turn it off. Shame on me but I guess you can’t like everything in life.

Okay:

1: Subjective, but fair enough. I think it looks beautiful.

2: Pick up another weapon. Simple. There's loads of them.

3: How else do you get anywhere? The fun is in what you find on the way there.

4: Yep. Although you could just do the four opening shrines then head for Ganon if you want to. He's in the big castle. Alternatively, see 3.

I know this may not help, but there is a reason it's becoming so may people's GOAT. I'm not telling you what to enjoy, but there is so much here that this is one game I would say keep persevering with.

If you don't like finding your own way to places then this probably isn't the game for you, that's pretty much half of the experience. You could just follow the story markers as a last resort but you still ultimately have to find your own way to the destination.

That's a shame. I think it's the most beautiful game ever made and not dated in any way. But I understand your pain. I felt the same way about Horizon and nothing anyone said helped me enjoy it any more.

The game is great, but on a purely graphical level it looks crap, there's only so much artstyle can compensate for. Bilinear filtering on low-resolution textures, no anti-aliasing, sub-HD resolution with framedrops at 30fps... It's not a technical showcase sadly.

...He never said it's wasn't technical showcase. He said the game is beautiful. Which it is. I think Rez is probably the most beautiful game I've played. Doesn't mean it's a technical showcase.

The graphical quality is so bad, it really does detract from the beautiful environments for me personally. Nintendo are allergic to anti-aliasing, and the Dreamcast used higher quality texture filtering 20 years ago.

That's still not what he said though. It is a beautiful game.
