Football thread 2014/15 season

Swans haven signed Gomis on a free. Seems like a good player. I was initially worried Monk would struggle to attract signings but the club seems to sell itself these days.

Garry Monk just tweeted about the Gomis signing. It's really odd having a EPL Manager using twitter. Can't think of another manager in the top flight who uses it

Apropro nothing, thought I would post the list of stuff that Burnley have to do in order to comply with the Premier League regulations on grounds.

Turf Moor used to be one of the few (possibly only) grounds in the League where the players emerged from a tunnel behind the goal. Because TV wants their pre-match shots of the teams in the tunnel, the club have had to fill in the traditional entrance from the Cricket Field Stand and created a covered one between the Cricket Field and the Longside. I think the biggest travesty is that they've had to paint the CFS seats. First change to that stand in 45 years! Tradition going down the pan grumble grumble. etc etc

Floodlights have to be upgraded in order to cope with the demands of 3D TV. They were good enough for HD, but not 3D.

The whole stadium is needed to be "plug-in" capable - i.e Sky can turn up and run a couple of cables to their trucks to handle all the feeds. So, a (Arnie Voice) Total Rewire.

The press/TV gantry was 10m wide. It is now 19m wide, with two rows, and totally rewired for connectivity. Season ticket holders have had to be moved elsewhere.

Dugouts moved to a more central location. Wonder if they'll put car seats in. Preferably with some kind of 70s velour covering and those wooden ball things for your back.

The flashy electronic advertising hoardings have to go round the three sides facing the cameras.

Hawkeye has to be installed for goal line tech.

All in all, there are 150 separate projects in place to upgrade the ground to Premier League regulations. Hawkeye is the only bit to be done for free by the Premier League. Everything else is paid for by the club.

That's a pretty hefty undertaking for getting to sit at the top table, though the Sky money just for being in the league will be significant? Not that that makes it right, of course.

I imagine if they qualified for Europe at some point they'd need to do another lot of improvements too to meet the criteria for TV coverage of those ties, too?

I think the rules are different on that (forgive, I'm a geek when it comes to the organisation of sporting events and stadia). T'Turf would probably pass at a high enough level on the TV side with the changes for the Premier League, adding in UEFA rules, the ground is already all seater. Covering the advertising hoardings could probably be done.

As you say, it is the price for sitting at the top table. Not just Sky though, as every game will be beamed live to God knows how many countries. Then you have the minor stuff, like every pre-game press conference will now be broadcast worldwide, so the club have to upgrade the back office facilities. VIP facilities are pretty non-existent - the posh nobs park their cars behind the Longside which I can't see working if Sheikh Mansoour is in town.

They are also bringing in access control swipe cards for season tickets - I doubt that is a PL rule, but I reckon it is only because we have the money to implement it now that it is being done.

It is a hell of a disadvantage and distraction. Burnley got an exemption from some of it in 2009 as people assumed we were one and done forever, this time there is no grace period. I think the co-chairmen said all in all it is about £3m worth of work, but I can imagine half of the floodlights being turned off when we drop back to the Championship. I know the ProZone equipment is still there from 2009, but we wouldn't pay the licence fee any more!

I dont know where else to put this, but do you guys know where I can find a comprehensive list of stats? I'm looking for times goals are scored, how many games had goals in the first 10, 20 or 30 minutes and so on for a little project.

I believe getting into Europe also means you have to have a certain number of corporate boxes, post-match interview areas, car parking spaces etc beyond the Sky requirements.

Depends on the stage and the competition. Tallaght Stadium in Dublin was suitable for Shamrock Rovers' Europa League group ties against Tottenham and Juventus once they put a temporary stand in - it was a two sided ground until that point and the capacity was below the minimum for that stage of the competition. (Not sure if that stand is still there, not been back for a while.) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_stadium_categories

Happy that he's gone tbh, he's acted disgracefully.

Clatternburg was right.

I did see some of the stuff from various forums beforehand (Lallana signing a Liverpool shirt and telling the fan 'I hope I sign for them' before the World Cup for one) and I thought it was pretty outlandish. Silly kid, I hope his attitude bucks up.

I think his comments when England visited that favela told us that Clattenburg had the measure of the guy. Clearly a complete tosser.

I've missed all this, what was his comments and what did Clatenburg say?

As a Liverpool fan im happy with the signing, he'll fit in well to our style of play.

Both in this article:

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/world-cup-2014-adam-lallana-makes-favela-gaffe-as-he-describes-how-to-be-around-players-like-us-may-be-a-lifechanging-experience-9526139.html

Sounds like his head may be slowly disappearing up his own arse, which is a bit of a shame.

Lallana allegedly starts acting increasingly like he's kind of a big deal.

Clattenburg calls him out on it, saying he's "changed".

Lallana confirms Clattenburg is basically right by responding in an incredibly precious manner.

Lallana says that "being around England players could be a life-changing experience".

Lallana acts like a massive cunt to force a move from a club that supported him a lot.

I think there's a pattern emerging here.

Fabregas for £27m is a bargain. 25m for Lallana is daylight robbery.

Looking at it like that, yep you are right but you have to factor in Fabregas wages over 5years will be close to 11million while Lallana is more like £5mil.

Chelsea have done well to get him though, he's gonna improve them no end.

Well we can't afford to pay Fabregas £30m+ over the course of his contract. And you fundamentally missed the point I was making.
