Football thread 2014/15 season

Liverpool haven't actually signed many players (three I think) yet. They've been linked with plenty, but it is silly season.

Then again as far as squad strength is concerned they probably have the weakest squad of the big teams. A strong first 11, but not much depth beyond that. Taking it that their best player is off it makes sense that they'd be very active in this transfer window.

What? They've signed three which is more than most (if not all), and spent what, £60m? They've got two about ready to be confirmed apparently.

Hearts vs Dinamo Bucharest. A quiet pre-season friendly in Leigh, attracting 300 spectators ends up with fireworks thrown on the pitch, a player off with a suspected broken leg, the Dinamo captain being sent off and Dinamo sneaking an extra guy onto the pitch to cover for him.

Didn't stop you last year. ;)

:P

As Johnny says, we have the weakest squad outside of our starting 11, so we were always going to spend a bit this window, regardless of the Suarez situation. I'd expect another 3 or 4 to come in, too, given that we still need defensive cover as well as those we are linked to (Origi seems a done deal and Markovic seems quite possible).

Shows he's not in it for the money though. Could have got paid shitloads more at a few other clubs I reckon.

I've always liked Ashley Cole. Incredible player, consistently the best left back in the Premiership for many years. The whole "Cashley" bollocks is ridiculous as you could accuse the majority of Premiership players of the same thing. Doesn't everyone in life generally go after a higher wage? He went to a club to get paid more and win more trophies than he would have otherwise. So what? Who wouldn't?

So just because you can say the same thing about other players it's "bullshit"? He went to a club to get paid more - the winning things was a gamble. In hindsight it paid off, but there's no guarantee what would have happened had he stayed. It's not like Arsenal were a tiny club with no chance of winning anything at the time.

Indeed, unlike most Arsenal fans I've never held the "almost crashed into a tree" thing against him as everything I understand of that whole episode wasn't so much about how much he was offered but the promises that were apparently broken.

Dusan Tadic for Southampton then.

Looks to be a good replacement for Lallana and nice to have an extra 14m out of the deal too.

His previous club have kindly posted a goodbye video too:

disclaimer: I know that even Ashley Young probably has a highlights reel that makes him look good.

Little bit of history made today. Not that mess going on in Belo Horizonte, though, I'm talking about the match in Armenia, where deep into injury time Santa Coloma of Andorra have their goalkeeper to thank for the goal that puts them through to the second qualifying round of the Champions League to play Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Wait a second, the keeper went up but two outfield players stayed back? And for a freekick on halfway? Why didn't the keeper just take the kick?

That pretty much always happens when a keeper goes forward though - you always have at least 1 outfield player stay back. I presume it's because there's a psychological boost to having a keeper go forward?

It's usually the boringly-boring reason of "keepers are tall".
