Football thread 2014/15 season

It's not like he's 'letting the younger lads have a go' either, Germany don't have much depth at fullback or defensive midfield. I'd agree that whoever is manager in 2016 will probably be begging him to reconsider, not to mention the supporters. I can't imagine him being comfortable with the idea of potentially watching them go and win trophies while he's sitting at home either.

I'll bet he un retires before Euro 2012. I get wanting to go out at the top, having a World Cup final win as your last game is kinda poetic but he has so much more to offer. The Germany manager will be on the phone to him every day to try and get him to reconsider.

Fantastic deal for us cause we only bought him for £8m and he hasn't really done much to improve his value by £6m.

We're then gonna use that money to buy Remy for £8m too it seems. I'd have expected QPR to try get more than that.

So this was me two months ago:

Feel OK to be honest, such is football.

The main thing I'm gutted about is the likelihood that I'll never see George Thorne in a Derby shirt again. Best deep mid I've ever seen for us.

And this is the first time I've ever used this emoticon:

:omg:

Here's a video:

Look at the pass at 1:17. LOOK AT IT. He played a total of 12 games for us and I pretty much spent all that time drooling. We scored twice as many goals with him playing as we did in the previous 12.

He's way, way too good for the Championship and generally our midfield is stupid. New deals for Bryson and Hendrick, and Football League Young Player of the Year Hughes, who himself has just signed a new four year deal, is struggling to get in the side.

It's a great time to be a Derby fan.

I saw him in the play off games and he was a cut above the rest, comfortably the best player on the field. Very good signing. Are you confident of going up this season? From what I saw of Derby they looked a very good team, I felt they lacked maybe a more all-round centre forward. A Charlie Austin type. My Derby supporting friend explained how the current forwards were scoring a shitload and said as a collective they offered everything, but I wondered if that was why they lost the playoff final - needing to make changes to vary things instead of having a player who can play several roles.

Are they looking to sign/signed any new forwards?

For your first question, if we aren't hit too badly with injuries and don't go up, something is wrong.

Talking of injuries, if our one good striker, Chris Martin, gets injured, then we are well and truly shafted. He missed a handful of games last season and we are a broken team without him. He's absolutely our most important player, and he plays the role to perfection, dropping deep as an extra playmaker to release the two wingers and Bryson (for whom he set up many of that player's 16 goals) but also arriving late to finish off chances (he finished with 20). He was outstanding last season. Sadly the playoff final was one of his worst games. Derby don't really have the system to support a poacher. Chelsea's Bamford (poor general play, amazing finishing) was loaned to us to play that role but he was only ever good as an impact sub.

On first glance he looks a little overweight, zero pace, and falling over all the time. It takes a while to realise how important he is and how perfect he is for this team. Whether he can make the step to the Prem is another matter but without doubt he's one of the top few strikers in this division.

So yeah, the only real issue is depth.

Incidentally, Martin hit a hat trick today against Notts County. We need to put him in bubblewrap.

I hope Southampton start signing more players or we're going to have to juust dump a few wheelbarrows of cash on the pitch in lieu. Still, at least we have white Pele and that Serbian guy!

Could be weird on day 1, I reckon there'll be more of our team from last season lining up for Liverpool than for us.

There is something slightly surreal about Burnleys first pre-season game, away to a cobbled together team of local part timers, being broadcast live across the internet.

you've got to play QPR at least twice more this season so you might as well get used to it

He stepped up and his commitment can't be knocked.. but I hope we get someone more influential in the role next. At the WC the corner flag had more ability to change the game in our favour than he did.

I don't think it ever really clicked for him and England, but I guess he's not alone in that.

He was wasted in his prime IMO. For the last 10 years should have shaped the team around him in an attacking midfield role, as opposed to compromising him in various positions trying to squeeze in various players, or using him to plug the left hand side.

It will never make sense to me why you wouldn't play your best player in his best position and build the team to suit that.

It's the right time for him to go though.
