How do the controls work for the speccy emu? Eg., some games used a lot of the keyboard, and you've obviously got less buttons on a GBA. Plus, I'd imagine text adventures are a nightmare to play on it! :)

You are limited to games which use less then six buttons I guess. You map the buttons to joystick buttons or keyboard keys when you create the ROM.

There is a virtual keyboard within the emulator. So if you could be arsed to type out GO NORTH, EXAMINE, FIGHT etc you could play a text adventure quite easily.

Why does the flash cartridge rattle when you shake it? Doesn't that imply a poor build quality?

I have two flash carts. One rattles, the other doesn't.

Worthy of note is the fact that 3 of my 15 original GBA carts suffer the 'rattling' effect.

Just one of those things as I also remember it happening on some SNES & Megadrive carts.

Did you just go and try all your GBA carts, or is is something you have written down just for cases like this?  :)

I knew that a couple did because it is something that used to bother me in the early days.

But, in answer to your question, yes, I did just go and shake 'em all!

:D

Mine doesn't.

I've only just received it at work and I haven't tried it yet; hope it works.

I'm a bit worried about the battery issue. Reading the gbatoys forum it seems like the rechargable battery inside the cart can die after a couple of months.

How long is your GBA lasting with the cart? Again, the forum shows that some games can halve the GBAs battery time to around 4 3/4 hours. Have you purchased an extra GBA battery? How long does the GBA last after the red light comes on?

I'll mostly be using just the cable anyway for development.

I have two flash carts. One rattles, the other doesn't.

Tilting it left and right, it seems like the board inside is very slightly too small for the case. I guess it's just luck on whether it fits inside correctly or not (around 20% from your stats).

My battery does drain quicker on my GBA when using my flash carts. It's the only annoying issue with them. However, it is mostly when burning a file to the cart. Apparently it drains power at double speed whilst burning. Make sure that you always have the GBA plugged into the mains whilst doing this.

They add on VAT plus the postage so it comes to around £93 for the EZ-F kit.

EDIT: Found this place which sells the same kit for £10 cheaper - http://www.tmgame.co.uk/EZF-Advance%20256MB.htm

Does anyone know if that site is reliable? I notice that he doesn't accept credit cards, so I'd need to do a bank transfer.

How do you go about getting your money refunded if an individual doesn't deliver goods after you have paid them by bank transfer?

That site looks a wee bit dodgy, but it does give an address in Bradford, which is quite close to where I work.

Might get in touch, and see if I could pick one up in person...

I took the plunge and purchased one in the end off him. I paid by bank transfer and it arrived within a week. He put the wrong invoice in the package though, but interestingly it showed that he is an ebay seller.

See here for his feedback, http://cgi2.ebay.co.uk/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dl...k&userid=dmt166

I can't believe these things cost between 80 and 100 quid. They must cost about tuppence to make, consisting of a basic bit of software to chuck data down a USB port, a cable, and a plastic cart containing what is now a very small amount of static RAM.

As I read recently, "things in the consumer market are priced according to what the public will pay for them".

Finally got my replacement EZF from gbax today after sending that crappy XG2 back. Alas no instructions or software and the ezfadvance.com site has a broken link where the software should be. Can anyone help me out please?

Amusing - I now have the entire Famicom Mini collection on my flash cart. Halfway through flashing them, I realised - shit, why not just use PocketNES?

Famicom Mini is far superior to PocketNES in all areas apart from game choice.

Famicom Mini emulates on a per-game basis, meaning that it optimises the screen and sound based on that game. Look at Mappy - they've sqeezed the stats bar, but kept the main game screen pretty much to the proportion it is on a TV. Similarly, they've analysed the sound channels each game uses. Play Excitebike on PocketNES and at full nitro, the bike goes into a continuous, high-pitched whine. On Famicom Mini it sounds just as it did on the NES.

I suppose, but Super Mario Bros looks identical to the Pocket NES version. Mario is still horribly squished. In this case, Pocket NES beats it for offering the option to squash the background down, but keep the sprites at the proper resolution.

Well, thanks to the exchange rate goodness at the mo, I managed to find an Extreme Flash Advance 256Mb USB cart for £62 delivered from the US! Now I just need something to stick on it... can anyone point me in the direction of a friendly homebrew site? Couldn't get any of the downloads from Snesheaven to work

Well I have taken the plunge, and got myself an EZ-F USB 256Mbit kit. Whatever that is.

It'll arrive tomorrow, the question is will it arrive here, or at my mate's house (meaning I don't get it until next Monday). Questions, questions.

Still, I look forward to playing Speccy and Elite. And Nes. And loads more.
