Conclusions

Based on the data supplied, the profile of console ownership amongst Rllmuk posters can be summarised as:

  • In the last gen the majority of respondents owned all three main consoles, with the Xbox 360 having the largest user base
  • In the current gen, the PS4 is expected be the best selling console, with the Wii U second most popular
  • The PS4 has a high initial attach rate (41% of respondents own one, with 60% as many owned among respondents as PS3s). This is expected to increase at a slower rate over the future
  • 38% of respondents own a Wii U, which has been on sale for a year longer than its competitors.
  • The XB1 has a lower attach rate (14% of respondents, 17% of the Xbox 360’s ownership). However the ownership rate is expected to more than double over the console’s lifespan
  • The Vita is marginally more popular than the 3DS
  • At present 45% of PS4 owners, 40% of Wii U owners, and 25% of XB1 owners own no other current-gen machines. This implies that multi-platform titles will be more popular on the PS4, supported by sales figures of multi-platform titles to date, where owners will not have a choice about the format on which they can purchase multi-platform titles.
First up, this is not a console war thread. We have enough threads for this already and it would be interesting to simply look at statistics rather than start acting like fanboys. I have made this poll as impartial as possible for this purpose. It should only take a couple of minutes to complete, if that.

Given that all three current gen consoles are now released, seem to be available at retailers, and are out of their launch window I thought it might be interesting to get a poll of forumites to see what they have purchased, what they plan to purchase, and how this compares with their ownership of previous gen consoles. This is a gaming forum; it makes sense that there should be an understanding of what consoles we own between us. The statistics released by manufacturers and retailers are not directly comparable with each other (ie. numbers sold vs numbers shipped, etc), and even if they were would not tell us about what the Rllmuk subsection of the population purchase.

If we can get a decent sample then I am happy to produce some analysis of the results and all that other geeky stuff to help provide meaning behind the data provided.

It would also be useful for respondents to also provide a brief summary of the qualities in the consoles they choose to purchase in reply to this topic, as free text fields are not provided in the forum's polls. Please try to avoid saying anything which will get people defensive or start a row. I can use this to build a list of the most important factors, features and qualities in shaping buying decisions.

For example, in my case I would describe the factors which influence my decision making as:

  • Price of the machine
  • Quality of first party software
  • The console which my online friends play on

I did consider that, but decided it was not necessary as the question is multiple choice, and respondents can leave both fields blank if they own neither.

With three consoles it is better to have a "none of the above" option, as with a wider selection of machines it is good to understand which combination of machines people own. With two it felt like overkill, and it tends to pay to keep surveys as brief as possible.

Voted.

  • Manufacturer warranty / ease of replacement

The last two questions are asking the same thing. I presume you meant the last one to be "... at some point"? (edit: ah, you've edited it accordingly).

In any case, I'll vote when the issues with not being able to leave a null vote are fixed up, but in the meantime, the main driving forces behind me picking up a console are:

  • Necessity (have I got anything else to play?)
  • Desire (does it have a game I really want?)
  • Price (is it worth the money?)
  • Range (what can I play on it?)
  • Future (where's the system going, exactly?)

The first of those is the primary reason why I don't even have a PS3 yet, let alone any next gen console. I've more than enough to keep me busy at the moment. I didn't pick up an Xbox 360 until late 2007, and since then I've accumulated far more stuff than I've actually played.

The last one is something I've thought more about in the last couple of years. I have an extensive collection of downloaded titles on the 360, and the knowledge that these do not carry over to Xbox One makes me hesitant to make the switch until I can see what's happening. Sony's commitment to Cross Buy where possible is pleasing, but if I'm honest, the PC looks most attractive for downloadable titles.

Backwards compatibility is one thing but I'm unlikely to turf out my older systems, so I don't mind if the discs don't work on later hardware. But I do mind having games potentially lost in the ether when servers get switched off or hardware dies. As we're moving further into a digitally distributed world, I want to see where the commitments lie.

For the either of the "plan to own" options, if you already own one should it be checked again or "none of these"? I'm not buying anything but nor am I getting rid of anything.

Taken literally, you would keep it ticked. Otherwise it would say "plan to buy/acquire".

As Sprite Machine interpreted, I have written it to highlight what you plan to have in your possession in those periods. That way we can look at how we expect the ownership of consoles to shift over time.

Owned all three last time round, this time the Bone is going to give because of the ways in which the hardware is better on the PS4, and the highest profile Bone game, Titanfall, is something I'm not in the least bit interested in. Plus if it's anything like its predecessors, it will be released but then barely supported here (Japan).

Haven't bought any yet, but intend to buy the Wii U later this year and the PS4 some time in future, when there are a number of games I want on it that can be picked up cheaply, possibly second-hand. At the moment there is only Ishin that I'm bothered about. For the time being, I'm picking up titles I missed on the last generation for peanuts and that's suiting me fine.

I've based my vote on what I own directly, rather than stuff we have in the house because they belong to the kids ( i.e. I've voted Xbox 360 as my only console last gen, but the kids had a PS3 and a Wii which I have access to - although I rarely touched either as I always had more than enough to keep me occupied on the 360 and not enough time to play other stuff).

My primary reasons for my choice of platform this gen (PS4) were:

Price - not necessarily a massive factor. Had the price points of the PS4 and Xbox One been reversed, the I would still have gone for the PS4 as long as the other influencing factors remained the same.

System specs - a major influence in my choice, both because it quickly became clear the the PS4 was the more powerful console, at a lower price, and because it came without all the extra overheads that Microsoft's machine was dragging along with it (mandatory Kinect, always on internet connection, restrictive DRM practices etc.). While I know most of these have now been dropped, it came too late.

Friends who I play online with - I play a lot of Battlefield, so going where the majority of my fellow players were going to be was a big consideration (plus it was shown that the PS4 version of the game was running at a higher resolution than the Xbox One version).

Backwards compatibility - this primarily concerns XBLA. Had Microsoft been able to let me move my existing, large, library of Arcade titles to the Xbox One, then it would have carried quite a bit of weight in my decision on which console to purchase. I'm fortunate enough to have been able to keep my 360 when I bought the PS4 however, so I still have the ability to play my existing (and any new) Xbox 360 Arcade titles by simply switching inputs on my TV.

Essentially, my decision has come down to Microsoft dropping the ball so badly. Even with the PS4 having better specs, I would likely have stuck with Microsoft (and suspect many others would have too) had they not driven me away with their counter-productive plans. I count the 360 as one of the best consoles I've owned and was looking forward to a continuation of that relationship through the new gen, but now it's a case of Maybe getting an Xbox One at some indeterminate point in the future, but it's far from a cert.

I think my main thing is:

Is it available on the PC? Buy it on the PC

Will it be available on the PC? Wait, then buy it on the PC

Is it not going to be on the PC? See if it's worth buying a console for i.e. is it Bloodborne.

Is it a Nintendo game? Not fussed.

Does the console cost more than a new graphics card? No, buy console. Yes, buy new graphics card or CPU.

Voted, I am home consoles only, no time or interest in handheld consoles.

The Wii has been replaced by the Wii U & I expect at some point in the next 12 months to get rid of the 360 & PS3.

Leaving the PS4 as the main console, I have no interest in purchasing an xbox one until it drops in price to less than £200, which won't be for a few years yet.

Got everything last gen, still have tons of unplayed games for it all, so not rushing out to buy next gen stuff till it come down to a reasonable price level. For me I think that's around £200-250 for PS4/Xbone, so that should give me time to get through at least some of my pile of shame...

For handhelds I've already got the 3DS and Vita (OG). Might side-grade to the Vita Slim when that drops, as I use mine a lot and less battery charging would be nice.

Right now I'm skipping this gen and going PC only. It'll take one hell of an exclusive on either Bone or PS4 to make me want to get one, I've become a bit spoiled by proper 60fps gaming now and I'm not sure I can go back.

I voted 'plan to own ps4 and wii u eventually', but that is only a vague idea really because I was always a console guy until a few years ago, as of yet nothing on the horizon on ps4 or bone appeals to me the slightest bit. Far more likely to upgrade/replace my PC than switch back to consoles. 90% of the good stuff on consoles is on there anyway, in addition to the far more awesome exclusive stuff (if you like the kinds of games I like).

I had all of the last gen consoles (though the Wii only scraped in last year because I wanted to play F-Zero GX and PN03 and it was cheaper than a Gamecube); 360 first because it had the first exclusives I wanted [Mass Effect] and was better for multiplatform; PS3 after that when it had enough exclusives to interest me.

I have none of the current gen consoles because none of them have exclusives I'm after, and I have a PC that's currently better able to handle the multiplatform stuff. No console exclusives on the horizon interest me, so I've no real plans to buy one at the moment, but I can see myself getting a PS4 at some point in the future once my PS+ collection reaches critical mass.

I've a 3DS and Vita. I love the Vita for both its exclusives and portable versions of indie and 'big console' games. I keep the 3DS around for its DS compatibility (I need something to play Ouendan and the earlier Phoenix Wrights on!), and because I'm not willing to lose my (downloaded) copies of the new Phoenix Wright and Fire Emblem games.
