Whatever happened to X, I was looking forward to that...

Shamelessly stolen from GAF where there is an interesting thread on this running, this is a chance to look back on games that you were looking forward to, but that never made it out into the world. Those titles that were given a brief moment in the light, before being sent back to the development dungeon from which they would never again escape.

I'm talking about stuff like:

Riqa (N64)

I remember eyeing screenshots of this in Super Play and wanting it sooooo bad.

Cosmic Walker (Wii)

This came out on a Nintendo promo video and then was never seen again. Totally mysterious.

The Grinder (Wii)

Probably would have been pretty mediocre, but I liked the vibe and setting.

EDIT: Try and provide at least a screenshot or something for your picks. Broker got the memo ;)

Saboteur [PSX/PC - Cancelled]
Saboteur is a cancelled action game that was in development in 1998 / 1999 by Tigon Software for the Playstation and PC. You can read the original press release below:
Saboteur is a fast paced combat adventure game, which fuses genres and gameplay styles. It is a game that embraces new concepts and new production values whilst holding onto solid game-play values of older classic titles. It is not a fighting game, nor is it only an adventure game.
Saboteur will be the first arcade adventure game to feature a full on 3D fighting system (complete with high/low defending and grapples). It embraces the complexity of 3D fighting games and adds multiple opponents.
You play the part of Shin Ienaga, trying to avenge the death of your grandfather and rescue your sister from the clutches of the evil G.E.N.E Corporation. The action is viewed from a third person perspective and involves a variety of combat, puzzle solving and exploration. It matches a strong story line to proven genres (action adventure and 3D combat) and adds its own spin of magic, ninja style.
Saboteur’s most unique feature is the introduction of a second character on the player’s side. Shin is joined in his quest by Shiro, his faithful hound, who follows him wherever he goes. Shin is able to command Shiro to either attack enemies or give assistance in tricky areas of the game, by retrieving objects or helping to solve puzzles. Due to his advanced senses Shiro is able to give advance warning of approaching or hidden danger, however there is a price to pay if you don’t look after him.
Features:
  • Strong story line and plot development with emphasis on Ninja main character.
  • Refined Combat System within third person perspective. When in combat Shin operates on a different plane and automatically locks-on to the nearest attackeCombat includes: hand-to-hand, swordplay, and weapons (throwing knives, guns and clubs).
  • Use of second character on player’s side – a largely computer controlled dog Shiro. Shiro is a powerful weapon in a fight and also a useful navigation tool in the game world.
  • Wide range of characters (30+) each with their own set of unique moves.
  • Sophisticated enemy AI, enemies learn your fighting style and adapt their defences to it.
  • Variety of locations with over 20 levels spread across five huge game worlds.
  • High technology – motion capture, single skinned objects, true object dynamics.

The original Fallout 3, or Van Buren as it was code-named. I still greatly enjoyed Bethesda's offering but having VB cancelled so close to completion was a real kick in the balls. I know they re-used parts of it for New Vegas, but that just wasn't the same.

Rockstar Agent - Was supposed to be a PS3 exclusive but no further news from Rockstar, hopefully will be their first new release on the current gen of consoles (excluding the GTA re-release).

The leaked shots of that looked lovely, although I guess they're all irrelevant now. Whilst I know Rockstar are probably still working on it in some form (they certainly still were last year) I feel like if they're not managed to get a playable version going in the last 7 years, maybe there's something wrong with the project conceptually.

I've always assumed that this would eventually leak in whatever state it was in when they abandoned it, but with years passing and no sign of it I guess maybe it's been destroyed or lost?

They renewed the trademarks last year so I think it is still on the cards, probably been scrapped from it's original idea to take it to the new batch of consoles. Although personally I just want Rockstar to work on another Red Dead game. Hell I would even buy a re-released version for the PS4 of Red Dead Redemption.

Half-Life 3

Oh, I never wanted Half-Life 3, just Half-Life 2: Episode 3. Calls for HL3 only emerged when too long had passed for Valve to release Ep3 with any credibility.

I remember one of the Devs discussing what had happened to all the materials, and showing some snippets, but can't recall exact details. The tutorial was leaked, it was pretty rough though. Had you being escorted across a bombed town by a BOS member to take your place in a vault. It was still isometric style but they'd also applied a 3D effect to it, reminded me a bit of Syndicate Wars.

Good call. RDR would be amazing on new hardware, considering how good it looked on the old consoles. Would prefer a sequel as opposed to a remix, though.

A few years back in the retro folder there was a "games featured in magazines that never got released" topic which had a few names I remember looking forward to - things like Dead Phoenix, that supposed Last Ninja 3D sequel, EXO...

oh and this :(

Dead Rush was one I remember being quite excited about before it got cancelled.

Not sure why now, looks a bit crap. I guess it was the prospect of open world zombie fun.

Gotham by Gaslight was another, although i think that never went into proper production.

I'm still waiting for that New Mombassa level in Halo 2 that they showed at E3 all those years ago.

Imagin if it's hidden in the Chief Collection. It isn't. I know.

There was another turn based Xcom game touted donkeys ago but I can't find anything about it as I haven't a clue what it was called but it got quite a big write up in PCZone a while back, must have been late 90's or something.

Oh and Little Big Planet 3.
