Street Fighter V Champion Edition - 14th February 2020

Recommended Posts

North American Regional Finals tonight at 22:30 with the Top 8 of the Open Premier starting earlier at around 19:00.

There ought to be new announcements; characters likely and probably more details around next years new Tournament mode. Probably not Street Fighter 6 though.

Dreamhack Atlanta and ArcRevo are on too so a lot to watch this weekend:

Champion Edition has been announced for February next year. It includes all 40 characters including the newly announced Gill (presumably Seth is the remaining unannounced character to round out the Arcade Mode bosses), ~200 costumes, all stages and each character gets an additional VSkill.

Its $30, or you can upgrade from your current version for $25. The upgrade is available today and will unlock any of the already-released content CE contains. Gill released in December.

Gill's trailer:

I figured they'd wait until Capcom Cup for the new version announcement. Other than Seth and the new Tournament mode I'm unsure what they could reveal. Unannounced extra content maybe or perhaps a brief early tease of Street Fighter 6 for next gen?

The Capcom blog goes into a few details:

Not Championship Edition?

I've always called the Mega Drive version that so I'm surprised to find it was just Special Champion Edition. I dont think there was a Championship Edition? What?

Just now, Dave White said:

Didn’t they say at launch there would be no   Super, ultra type versions of this game.

No, they said the first disc would be the only one you need so no forced upgrades like SFIV to Super SFIV was.

Did SFV do well? I mean, SF4 seemed like the biggest thing since 2 and yet Capcom needed Sony to help fund V. And V had, uhm, a somewhat rocky start and to this day suffers from an, uhm, unfortunate reputation. Is SF6 even a viable prospect after V? Or did V do extremely well thanks to all the microtransactions without anyone realizing?

I believe SFV has sold like 4 million copies or something, more than SFIV. I think a new, good, Street Fighter would always be a viable prospect though really and I would guess that a fair chunk of SFV's budget was probably taken up by creating the CFN infrastructure and all that.

Since on the rare occasions I boot this up I tend to play as Sagat I was really hoping for more V-skills. Mildly worried about how well chosen they'll be given that Ryu's is just a dodge rather than a parry and both Bison and Rashid seem to have new things to make them extra annoying but fingers crossed I guess.

Is it really? I mean, yeah a good Street Fighter is the best thing ever. But everyone was mad hype for 4 because it had been ages since the last new main Street Fighter. And everyone was subsequently mad hype for V because 4 was so good.

But with 6 it will have been very recently that the last version of V came out, and there may be less hype because V could have tarnished SF's reputation.

I don't know, maybe I'm completely wrong and simply projecting my own disappointment in every single decision they made with  V. But maybe they'd be better off skipping a generation with SF and instead bring, for example, Darkstalkers or something back on next-gen.

Well yeah, I think so.

I've never been as down on SFV as many, more ambivalent I suppose, but I see its reception and the effect on the next game the opposite way really. There are a lot of people out there who didn't take to V for various reasons so have, in effect, been pining for a new Street Fighter they'll really love for years already. The core fanbase who are still playing V will buy it because it's Street Fighter and if they get it right tonnes of those lapsed players will happily return.. again, because it's Street Fighter.

Capcom's always been in a really privileged position because of the place this series has in so many people's hearts, if they don't actively fuck things up for themselves it's a pretty sure bet.

Yeah V is just a little shy of 4 million as of Capcom's last update. That is more than Vanilla SFIV's 3.4 million however that game was superseded (haha) just 15 months later. It's probably fairer to compare SFV to those together; all the versions of SFIV across all platforms (PS3, PC, Xbox360 and 3DS) sold closer to 8 million in total.

SFV likely turns a decent profit from its DLC. Character specialist are more likely to pick up one or two costumes here and there for their main while in SFIV you couldn't get an individual's outfit without forking out for a weirdly-grouped bundle. That it's one consistent game with cross-platform multiplayer rather than an upgrade that splits the user base like IV was from vanilla to super and AE to Ultra made the online feel more active so a cosmetic purchase feels a bit more worthwhile.

I do think SF6 wont be far away. Well see a farewell batch of characters halfway into 2020 and marketing will begin for its sequel. I do wonder what route they'll take. I'm sure they wont make the same error of rushing out the game unpolished and lacking in modes but they're absolutely certain to find a fresh mistake to taint it all with.

Ah, fair enough - the reporting was maybe slightly misleading on that. Though I guess with the different release strategies it does make a meaningful comparison a bit wonky. Like if you upgraded to Arcade Edition and now Champion Edition that's not technically another two copies shipped but if you did the equivalent for IV it would've been.

Apparently from April to June this year it sold 600k copies which seems really healthy for a game this old, especially when updates and content had started to become thin on the ground.

@Rsdio yeah, you're right. If Capcom can reveal a SF6 which looks absolutely brilliant abd everything we wanted V to be, it'll create its own hype.

Question is, can Capcom? Can Capcapom?? To be fair, since around the second half of the current generation they've been on fire. RE7, MHW, RE2 Remake, all big quality hitters. Can they carry over this hot streak to the bumbling SF team?

You know how Arc Systems makes these gorgeous fighters that look like beautiful 2D but are really extremely well done 3D? My dream SF6 game would look like that. Like a beautiful halfway point between 3rd Strike  and SSF2X, evoking that 2D gorgeousness while being a wonderfully smooth and responsive 3D.

Gameplay wise I would love for 6 to play like 2, because that's where this cranky 40 year old will forever be stuck at :D I appreciate that will never happen :)

I think SF6 will still be a while away...

In that, Champion Edition is landing at the start of a new Capcom Pro Tour year so I would have thought we’ll see at least another year of SFV before 6 lands. It’s an all new version so they’re not going to disregard it so soon after release.

I imagine Capcom Cup will have a lot more changes shown off in Champion Edition. Here’s hoping for more defensive options...

It is worth remembering just how unfinished and barren that initial release of SFV was compared to even SFIV. We'd seen three Netherrealm releases since IV and they all had substantial single player modes so people naturally expected that V would see Capcom offer something similar. Instead there was a piss poor arcade mode, a strange mish mash of virtual currencies and a busted online mode where quitting mid fight was rampant due to the complete lack of punishment. It was an early access game in just about every way.

And it didn't have Sagat. For fucks sake.

A feature rich SFVI would definitely get people excited again.

Only a 5 dollar discount is a bit of a eh?

Could have at least made it 19.99 for existing owners. I'll just wait till the full thing hits a sale

Pretty much everything I want too! I've always fantasised about a Street Fighter game done in the Alpha art style to a DBFZ/Guilty Gear standard. Just imagine

As someone who gave up on V after a few frustrating months, for me they have skipped a gen!

And although there was a 9-year gap between 3S and IV, the latter arrived during peak #37 hype as an update of II when online gaming was taking off on consoles. It's been almost that long since the height of IV, so I feel that most of us are now ready for VI to turn it back around. They need to ditch UE4 if they can't reduce latency, and then sort out their janky animations, gamespeed and netcode.

I don't want them to roll out VI yet because V's slowly-expanding roster has brought in a lot of cool people who I never thought we'd see... and they could go nuts with that kind of stuff if they had the time and resources. Where's Q, Necro, Darun, Lee, Dan, Sean, Retsu, Skullo? :P

Unless VI does the Smash thing and proclaims that everyone is here. ;)

I reckon there was a conscious decision at some point to keep a number of characters back in prep for 6.

I really want them to focus on having all characters from the start and let people choose who they buy. I feel there’s a lot of unseen characters in this game basically because they turned up so late and people weren’t interested in moving (unless they’re obviously strong)

Heres a demonstration of a few new VSkills. No idea why Ryu is getting yet another variation of a Parry/counter since that's what his first VSkill and VTrigger II are already.

I hope on the whole the new skills make the characters more versatile. I genuinely forgot Nash was in this game.

Just bought the upgrade because I'm a dick and can't help myself. I don't have Kage or the recent three characters so it's not a bad deal for those, plus Gill, plus whoever, plus all the extras.

Interesting that the PS4 theme that comes with it calls it Definitive Edition rather than Champion.. Everyone was feeling like this might be it and on the one hand that might seem to confirm it but the apparent name change makes me wonder.
