It's working pretty much perfectly for me this evening.  I'm thoroughly enjoying Nash; I'm not sure I'll ever get bored of putting fireballs in my pocket.  Or following up a sonic boom with a sneaky teleport.

Also, I can't be the only one who thinks of Alan Partridge during Cammy's victory pose.  "Well yes, it's for hygiene reasons too.  It lets the buttocks breathe"

Had two more games, one unplayably laggy and one just normal laggy against a rather good Rashid. Easily destroyed me with frametraps. Also I realised that when you search for battle lounges, it's supposed to show the country and connection speed. That showed up on literally two out of the hundreds of lounges I saw.

Training mode then. Cammy seems fun. I did loops of cr.mp xx mp Hooligan* into dive kick from the other side, which combos into cr.mp xx mp Hooligan again. Or you can dive kick early, which whiffs and stays on the same side so you can throw or whatever. I'm sure that's a fairly fraudulent mix-up against anyone good but maybe there's some use in it.

*crouching medium punch, cancelled into the medium punch version of the Hooligan Combination special move

To be fair, the Gootecks Shimmy is a little obscure

Yeah sure, but maybe the better response, if the guy actually cares, would be 'what does 'gootecks shimmy' mean?'

it's not like this is the only thread on the forum that has its own arcane jargon. It's kind of what games are these days, struggling to see what his point is that's all.

I say stick with one character until you get a feel for how the game works. Then start playing as the others to learn their weaknesses; I often attempt gimmicks other characters pin me down with only to find out it's they're quite unsafe and I should have been punishing them the full time.

I've been having some occasional microstuttering on PC when any PhysX comes into play for the first time, like a bounce animation or when the sparks fly from the advertising boards in Bustling Side Street . I think I've fixed this by toggling PhysX in Nvidia control panel from Auto-select to CPU then back to Auto-select.

Servers seem quite stable tonight.

Joffo! I tried to invite you to a lobby. My cfn ID is plimpsoul if you were (understandably) confused.

Did anyone else enjoy hearing a certain Nathan Brown being described as one of the coolest guys in games and tales being told of his fighting game prowess on daft souls this week btw?

Is it general accepted wisdom that I should continue to pick a character I'm having success with until I learn the ropes?  Or do I learn more by playing as other characters rather than just fighting them?

Just stick with whoever you enjoy. You'll progress far faster if you're only focussing on one character.

Had some good games tonight, every match I played was perfect with zero lag. And when that happens the fighting just feels sooooo good.

I'm trying to get rid of some of the bad habits I picked up on SFIV, not jumping in like a madman and playing a more defensive game. And to stop using the spiral arrow unless there's an opening, because when its blocked it leaves me open far too long.

Still though I wish there was a better single player mode (like Challenge or an Arcade perhaps) so I could try out some of the newer characters.

Battle lounge works! Praise be! We're now just about up to spec with SFIVanilla (granted, survival mode was better in that game).

Has anyone seen a breakdown of how online ranking works? For some reason I'm assuming it's more complicated than SFIV and probably involves some kind of season or whatever (meaning I can't do my traditional weekend of ranked to build a respectable score - to avoid getting kicked from lobbies - before ignoring it forever)?

I love FANG's design, persona, animations and fighting style so much that I struggle to understand how people dislike him. It is, obviously, a matter of opinion, but I love everything about the character so far.  Third day with him in that game and only just noticed his neutral jump. Beautiful.

Also yes the Gootecks shimmy is extremely potent in this game. I'll explain what that is if anyone wants to know by the way. But yeah, it's especially strong in a game where you have to stand tech against throws and not many characters have long ranged, chainable crouching light kicks etc.

The servers seem a lot better tonight, I've been getting online matches all the time and even managed to get into a lobby. Speaking of which, thanks to @Kayin Amoh for the invite! I just hope it wasn't too boring wining all the time. I did learn a lot, but I've still got a long way to go. The game is fun though, so I don't even mind losing twenty to nothing :)

The lobbies are strangely empty right now with just a maximum of two people "Gerbik and Kayin have started a match"  - no shit, we're the only two people here! Proper lobbies should have been in there already. Still, the game is extremely addictive

Ayep, thanks for the games Gerbik! It's nice to see it starting to work, even though I couldn't get a match after you left though invites or match searching.

I really need to learn some ground links. My 'jump in to get close' probably isn't the best bet once people start seeing it - like getting air thrown ninety times in a row. Good reads!

And yeah, I find that log hilarious. 'I'll do my best!' > 'It's snowing'. I seriously hope lobbies wind up looking like the amazing GGXrd virtual arcade.

Again, really scrappy but who cares - I won! I thought I was going to be proper bodied after the beating I took at the start but I managed to keep my cool.

Am I alone in thinking Nash' specials aren't much cop? the genocide cutter knock off even in EX seems to be beaten by just about everything, you can see the moonsault from a mile away, sonic boom's ok I guess.

Either way moving from Ryu was a painful experience but I'm really enjoying Nash now. Learned that crouching MP doesn't hit toffee other than right up close so have to get out that mindset as it was so safe with Ryu.

I don't understand which aspect of the game is preventing you from playing it in the same way as you did in the SNES days.  Gather up some friends and play some Street Fighter.  You'll have a great time and you really don't have to care about what a Gootecks shimmy is.

To be fair, it would be a good and useful idea  to link to some glossaries and beginner's guides in the first post. I'd happily trawl for some links or write a basic legend for what cr, j, IA, xx and the like mean.

Shrew, I think you just rubbed people up the wrong way by (accidentally) implying people shouldn't use the jargon at all. If you're discussing the game in depth, it's way impractical to say "medium punch cancelled into" every time you mean mp xx. Honestly, it takes next to no time to learn most of the lingo if you're keen.

Added my details to the players list. Add me!

Finally started to play today. Had some fun this evening, was pretty stable too with only one server disconnect. Manged to snag a number of wins off other beginners in Casual Match mode. Don't even have a proper punish combo under my belt yet!

I'm too drunk to play tonight (was out learning the basics of Netrunner in a pub, I know some folks here will approve) but I really hope tomorrow evening brings me some matches. With others reporting that it's been working, I worry that my PS4 is just completely allergic to the internet.

Jab jab walk up throw is a common tactic. The Gootecks shimmy is doing jabs, standing up as if to throw but taking a step back instead. The opponent thinks you're going to throw so they do a throw tech. This misses because you've walked backwards and you can then hit them as they attempt to tech. I think it's fair to say that feinting and then punishing the opponent for reacting to it is not something unique to incomprehensble esports. Gootecks is a well known player who is known for using that particular trick in sfiv and it's a quick and easy way to describe it. Again, if you're unsure just ask.

It just feels like you're determined not to understand it. Cr. mp is crouching medium punch. Halo players call the battle rifle the BR and sometimes capture the flag is written as CTF. If I see an abbreviation along those lines that I haven't come across before I ask or I look it up. If I'm not interested enough to do that or don't have the time or energy then I, well, don't. I'm still not really sure what you want.

Also it is completely false that people weren't playing at high level in the old SNES days. You just weren't exposed to it because you were just playing locally with your friends and the internet hadn't brought everyone together. Cross ups, combos, trip guards, re-dizzies, touch of death combos and other terrifying alien speak were all in SF2. It's a very deep game that is extremely difficult to master. We didn't know about it then as we lived in our own local bubbles. The internet just takes you out of said bubbles and also allows the scene for niche hobbies to grow larger than they were in the past. If you want though, you can still just play with your friends. I don't get the mentality of having access to thousands of players from all over the world and then expecting a quick fix to the realisation that many of them are better than you. If that's not the issue and you just want to mess around with the game casually then just do that.

I have plenty of gaming friends who don't really know SF but will happily play it while oblivious to all the jargon and high level play. They still have fun with it. I think what some people find frustrating though is when they encounter someone who is at a high level and can easily win it's not immediately obvious why they won. Plenty of people still see games like SF as skill-less mash fests and don't realise that there's a lot more going on when you get into it.

Had a fantastic evening with this tonight, unwinding after some intense absolute stealth MGSV missions. Cleared easy survival with Nash and Bison so am now sitting on over 200,000 points (which I believe is my first two DLC characters for free!) and ranked up my Necalli to level 13.

I've taken to playing casual over ranked matches though. It's silly but the knowledge that that little LP counter won't be going down helps me relax into the game a lot more. You still get experience for the fight so it's all good. Quit on a high after beating a fellow Necalli with a CA, we both turned super saiyan at the same time and laid into each other, was pretty epic.
