I really enjoyed it, but didn't they already do a plotline about

Mulder being convinced his belief in aliens was misdirection? Back in like season 5 or 6?

Otherwise, I loved the way they've expanded the series mythology to include modern conspiracies and shock jocks - of course a modern-day X-Files would have something to say about stuff like truthers, and even take the concept semi-seriously.

Yes, they did.

Season 5, episodes 1 and 2 "Redux".

I watched the first new episode tonight.

While it was nice to see Mulder and Scully again, I wasn't impressed.

It came across to me as just yet another badly written Conspiracy episode. Although I admit I did like how it tied into real life stuff that has happened since the series finished.

So, just because Nina from The Americans tells Mulder that she was actually taken by men and not aliens, suddenly he just abandons his beliefs and decides "IT'S ALL BEING DONE BY THE SHADOW GOVERNMENT!", despite everything that he has seen?! And - hang on - didn't he do the same back at the start of season 5, when the word of one person made him think the whole alien side of things was a hoax and it was all being done by the government / military / corporations etc.? Why, yes he did!

It shouldn't be news to Mulder that men were carrying out abductions and experiments, or making use of alien technology - he fucking knew the Syndicate was doing that for the Colonists and for itself back in the original series - so WTF did hearing one lone abductee say "it was men, not aliens" make him decide the Conspiracy was just men all along?

And it's not just everything Mulder's seen that has now conveniently been called into question just so that Carter can retcon the Conspiracy, there's everything *we've* seen too.

Nope, turns out it was all just the men in black performing a massive alien hoax because <reasons>, so that they can TAKE OVER THE WORLD WHEN THE TIME IS RIGHT, even though they've *long* been in possession of badass weapons and spacecraft and Stargate style zero point energy

Oh, something else:

The reviews I've seen thought that the first episode was average, at best, while the second and third (especially the third) were much better.

Would it surprise anyone here that Chris Carter wrote the first episode, James Wong the second, and Darin Morgan the third? ;)

Holy shit, this was fucking terrible. I can't remember when I last saw writing this bad on an actually broadcast TV show. And David Duchovny was apparently basing his portrayal of Mulder on a well aged plank of teak.

Was the X Files always like this? It's been well over a decade since I saw any of it, so maybe it was, I cant remember.

As Tezcatlipoca says above, seriously, Mulder just abandons all belief in aliens based on the rather vague mutterance of a girl he just met? Despite the fact that, if I remember correctly, he personally saw aliens loads of times?

And Glenn Beck is a good guy? Fuck off.

Yeah i'm intrigued to watch this, i was a big fan of the x files back in the day. However, personally i felt that x files as a whole was massively hit & miss. There were some great episodes but a large majority where mediocre. I really get bored of the alien conspiracy storylines - they seemed to drag the show down at times.

Just felt like safe, dry, generic drama to me. Stale acting all around, constant music too try and make the scenes seem more compelling etc. Too many Garth Merenghi DarkPlace style flashbacks too, played completely seriously of course  I might give it 1 or 2 more episodes but there really isn't much hope.
