Just to clear up my confusion are teams allowed to work on upgrading the engine over the winter? I thought the engine spec was to be locked down for three seasons? Or am I just making that up?

The shortest version is : They get to change a certain proportion of it.

There's some kind of bizarre and hard-to-comprehend development token system going on whereby manufacturers can 'spend' tokens on upgrade packages.

In that case Ferrari have done a bloody good job, another german win in a red car brings back nightmares.

There is an interesting rumour doing the rounds that Ferrari figured out that Mercedes are (rumoured to be) running fuel to different parts of the engine to bypass the flow limit sensor and have done the same thing, hence unlocking a crucial chunk of performance.

If that is true would the FIA try to outlaw it? But I suppose it would be difficult because requiring an overhaul to the engine.
