Going back to DeReam, I notice it doesn't support Win CE based games, so that means it currently won't play SEGA Rally 2 and Resi 2, maybe some others I don't have. Its no biggy

I think you are right actually as the only place I could fine a matching controller was via a seller in the US

Which Dreamcast games have the best VMU displays? Not talking about mobile mini-games like Sonic Adventure's Chao; just the logos and animations that appear through the hole in the pad.

 

Virtua Tennis' mini radar representation of the court, with pixels for the players and ball, was a useless in practice, but felt like a sign of great attention to detail.

 

The chibi fighters in Soul Calibur were nice too.

Resi games use the vmu as a health monitor.

Virtua Tennis’ VMU display wasn’t useless!  It was a great way to take the piss by beating your mate by only using the VMU (preferably plugged into the light gun) while they were using the telly.

 

I think Virtua Tennis 2 took it to another level by having a rotating wireframe representation, but I could be wrong.

in Shenmue, when an NPC teaches you a move they talk to Ryo like a real person, so will say things like "as you move forward throw a punch, followed by a kick" and the VMU screen would actually show the command i.e > X + A if you couldn't figure it out. I saw some people getting stuck on the remasters as obviously there's no VMU screen to help.

Some horrendous prices being touted about on ebay etc but surely there are cheaper options

if you wanted to DIY then the mods themselves are only £150, and a DC shouldn't be more than £50.

 

so if you can get a premodded one for around £200 then you're laughing.

@Jei sells them for £110, modded with a  GD Emu clone. I bought one and then bought a VGA to HDMI convertor for £15 - works a treat.

Yeah that is a vast difference to the resellers, I thought it would be. 

 

Think I might get this sorted then, emulation is good and that but it's not the same thing is it.

I feel like I say this a lot but why has Cosmic Smash never been ported to anything else. Was playing it for a few hours last night and it's almost perfect. 

 

Bit unforgiving in that you will get bumped back to the start if you don't pass a stage but it's the only fault.

 

I definitely used to be a lot better at it though, was struggling with trick shot finishes. Have to get better again!

If there ever was a console that needed a reboot/mini/rerelease as a digital only portable its the DC. A lot of the catalogue holds up really well, the graphics still look great and emulation shows it can be handled easily.

 

The sheer amount of faff you need to get the original hardware upto spec with GD emulators, PSU replacements, HDMI mods, changing the fan etc.. is a bit of a pish take but its still an awesome platform.

I both agree and disagree with this statement. As a DC fan, I think it would be great to have a portable mini.

 

The DC looks great on a VGA screen but would it look so good on an ARM-based SOC system? The DC hardware really pops in Vga.

 

The library is good but many of it's hits have been released on later generation consoles.

 

Regarding the modding and hacking; there's no need for PSU replacements or GD-emus, unless you want an ideal setup. The HDMI thing is a problem if you have no older PC monitors or cheaper TV brands LCDs, I suppose. Composite on a 4k tv probably looks gash and I guess most have no SCART or VGA?

Of course it is. Considering the emulators are homebrew and not fully optimized they are really doing well. Heck even the PSClassic is managing to play quite a few games at full speed, Switch/Shield TV are handling many more with ease.

With a digital distro system of relicensed old DC games would ace it in the current market and would cost next to nothing to R&D and get out there as they'd already spent the most important money.

 

The bits and pieces are all there, it just needs Sega to step up and string them all together and retail it for £100 and they'll be printing money.
