I've never played on a Dreamcast other than a demo machine which had Crazy Taxi on it (so a long time ago).

Is there much on there worth playing if you don't like racing games (of any type), 1-vs-1 beat 'em ups or platformers? Some very brief googling doesn't turn up a great deal, especially stuff that was exclusive.

Virtua Tennis is still my favourite tennis game ever made, although I feel that undersells it somewhat. I’m not even into tennis, but such is the beautiful simplicity of the gameplay.

VT2 got a PS2 port and there have been more sequels on 360/PS3, but none of them are backwards compatible, and it’s quite difficult to play any of them.

Blue Stinger is well worth a go for a late 90s Resident Evil knock off. The game is an insane hodge podge of different ideas but it comes across really well. Nothing quite like smashing a 4 armed zombie into pieces with a lightsaber in a christmas themed shopping district, while appropriate cheery musak plays.

Dynamite Cop is one of the most fun games ever made. Sequel to Die Hard Arcade and 30 minutes of pure beat em up chaos. Great fun on your own, hilarious with 2 players.

Both Shenmue games are outstanding if you've never played them, though I would recommend the HD versions over the DC ones purely for the instant loading.

Headhunter is a little clunky nowadays but still an engaging MGS lite style title with a fantastic soundtrack

Crazy Taxi, Virtua Tennis, House of the Dead 2 are amazing arcade ports and my favourite versions of their respective series.

Virtua Athlete 2K is worth a go, it's basically a dryer version of Athlete Kings on the Saturn

DC has the best console versions of the original Tony Hawk's games (yes better than 2x imo) and I always enjoyed the Ubisoft UFC game as well. Not a typical fighter.

Code Veronica gets a lot of praise, but i've always disliked it personally. I'd rather play through Blue Stinger again

Muther fuckin’ Rez!

Yes. I hadn't played it since the XBLA release until I put it on for "a quick go" last week. Can confirm that 20 years later, in 4:3 SD, it still has it.

I had a copy of this bundled in with my Dreamcast way back when and really liked the look of it. It would always soft lock at the same cut scene near the start so it was impossible to play.

I had other games so it was tossed in a cupboard and forgotten about but years later I learned that the early run of discs shipped with a game breaking bug and you had to send off for a replacement copy. Bit shit really.

Could never play Space Channel 5, not sure if I’m just rhythmically challenged, rhythm action games are not a strong point for me but I’m another level of useless in that game. I feel it’s an extra level of difficult, the window for hitting the beat seems so slim. Did anyone else struggle with it?

I like Space Channel 5 such as it is (very short score attack game). I find it completely impossible on anything other than a CRT.

My favourites (some have aged better than others but all still pretty good imo):

Sonic Adventure

Phantasy Star Online

Resident Evil CV

Power Stone

Rez

Bangaio

I have real issues with the timing on the first one. I wondered if there were issues with the PAL version. The second game is far more enjoyable. If you get to the Pudding battle and aren’t in love with it, it’s not for you.

Genuine question , why is Tony hawk 2 on DC better than 2x on the Xbox? I had 2 on the DC and played it to death. Is 2x not just a 60fps version of it?

Edit, found this YouTube vid, in the comments a developer on the 2x game explains what is wrong, well sort of:

Does anyone know of anyone I could send a PAL Dreamcast to for GDEmu modding? I know pre-modified ones are readily available on eBay, but I've been using a Japanese DC for years and would quite like to give my old one its second wind if possible.

Oh, really? I need to look into this, then. I assumed replacing the entire drive would be fairly involved, but I have no real basis for assuming this - I've replaced a PS1 disc drive before and it took five minutes. Cheers!  :P

Ed: is something like this suitable? I know some GDemus are referred to as clones but I've no idea what the original model was...

I dunno how good or bad the clones are. They’re rip offs of an original design that isn’t really made much/ever anymore.

Your mileage may vary with clones but it’s that, or something like a Terranonion Mode (this is what I have in my DC), which is great but expensive and subject to import tax. Plus, the dude who makes them is a serious asshole.

Thanks for the tips. I'm tempted to go for a pre-modded console now, as I've just spotted one on ebay for about a tenner more than the clone itself. Hideous black casing, but I guess I can change that... :)
