How do I format disks on an A1200? I want to check my Ultima VI works before it goes on eBay, but I need disks to install it to. I have a box of "blanks", but don't know how to format them to install to.

 

Also, wasn't there a way to get it to run a diagnostic on boot up to tell me if there's any additional hardware in there?

You can format disks using either Workbench via the Icons menu, or shell (format drive df0: name empty). I use a utility called SuperDuper as it is much faster and deals with non-Amiga blanks better.

Holding both mouse buttons down when you turn it on will take you in to the boot menu.

Not sure I ever expected to be in the credits of an actual album in my life, albeit in the thanks section.

 

@Lorfarius is in there too.

 

If it gets a bandcamp release or something I recommend.  The original creator's reworking of Party Land from Pinball Fantasies "sounding the way I wanted to back in the day" is worth the price of admission on its own.

If I'm using workbench to format a load of disks, do I have to keep swapping disks? Is there an easier way?

As above you can use a third party util if you have a mechanism for getting it on the Amiga (these tend to work better). The issue you are seeing is probably the system trying to load the Format command from the system (Workbench) disk each time, this can be overcome by copying the Format tool from the System folder of the floppy to the RAM disk and running it from there, but you’ll still have to put the Workbench disk back in to do anything else. 
 

A compact flash or SD card hard drive makes life much easier for not a lot of money.

This is a Checkmate 1500 case into which you can install pretty much anything. It’s heavily inspired by the A3000. 
 

In this case it seems to have some kind of FPGA Amiga clone in it.

So an emu box in a retro-themed case? Looks fairly accurate to the old ‘big box’ Amigas, which I like. :)

Pretty much yes. I also like the looks and am tempted to get the case for my A1200 but it's fairly expensive and has a few design quirks which I dislike - LGR on Youtube has done a good build video on it.

 

It's got a bit of history - in the early 90s the same guy made an "A1500" case for A500s and sold conversions, which inspired Commodore to put "Amiga 1500" stickers on the front of A2000s, drop the price and put him out of business. I had one of these and it was very nice, it let me put a hard drive and accelerator in a compact case and put a monitor on top.

Oh yes – I remember those cases being reviewed in Amiga magazines of the time. Like turn your 500 into an unofficial big box Amiga. Seemed rather suspicious that Commodore launched their own A1500 afterwards, seems it was a retaliatory move!

 

(The label on the front of the Commodore A1500 quickly fell off to reveal a standard Amiga 2000 badge. Seemed like a rushed-out product.)

Please help. Theres this game I remember playing but no idea what the name was and I can't find a trace of it anywhere.

 

You were a knight (I think) and it was platformery and slashy. You would go into caves and turn into animals like a spider, and then be able to climb the walls and ceiling. Sure there where other animals too but can't remember.

 

I can see it vividly in my remember brains. I don't even want to play it, I just need to be validated.

This is an interesting little story for Amiga nuts...

The A1500 - no not that one ... The add-on box for the A500 that was heavily promoted in Amiga magazines back in the day, and I personally remember lusting after.

Basically it upgraded your 500 to something like a Amiga 2000 with expansion ports and space for an internal hard drive. 

Its success was what prompted Commodore to release the actual A1500 apparently. 

Anyway you could buy them "ready made" as A500s with the A1500 kit already fitted. Turns out the company making them was literally buying the Commodore Batman packs and throwing everything away apart from the motherboards and keyboards to make their A1500s.

Didn't even realise there was a new version until I saw that video. Now I've seen the website and they say that it's for the "new generation of FPGA builds" - not sure what that means (well I know what FPGA builds are but didn't know there was a new generation of Amiga ones = would this be something like an Amiga version of the Spectrum Next? And do such things really exist?).
