Playtonic's Yooka-Laylee

Recently revealed in Edge, but as far as I can see it has no dedicated topic yet. Playtonic consists mostly of ex-Rare staffers from their golden days who want to bring back the cartoony collect-a-thon 3D platformer. They're not the first - look at A Hat in Time for example, as well a rumours that Rare themselves are working on a new Banjo set for reveal at E3 this year - but they are probably the most notable, considering their pedigree.

The Guardian had a nice article on them recently.

The team is going to be at the PC gaming conference Rezzed, revealing some more details about its project. Its clear that theyre hoping for a multi-platform release and have been talking to publishers though they are adamant they will remain independent. Everyone wants to see this game on Wii U of course, the symbolic reunion of old Rare and old Nintendo. Well have to see.

For now, theres just a fun buzz about the place. The plan is to grow the company to about 15 or 20 people to finish the game an N64-sized dev team. Their first hire has been ex-journalist Andy Robinson in a community and marketing role. This is what British game studios used to be like in the 90s; just small groups of friends, firing ideas and jokes at each other, and allowing those things to sneak into their games. Its just that the people in this small office once turned that approach into an artform. When Tim Stamper kicked off development on Banjo-Kazooie he told his team that he wanted players to be able to come back to this game in 20 years and still find it fresh and beautiful. They pretty much achieved his ambition. Now its time to do it again some place else.

I spent 25 years at Rare and I learned a lot, says Sutherland. It was kind of like a 25-year boot camp on how to make games. Now I feel like Ive graduated. I feel like I can do this now.

They want to release on as many platforms as possible, and are even considering Amiibos. It all depends on the Kickstarter no doubt. Though the game will come out no matter what, the Kickstarter allows them to think bigger.

There is a tease of one of the player characters in the image with shrubs and floating cubey islands.

It's in the bottom left corner area and Looks a bit like a lizardy type character

Didn't spot it myself but thought it might be of interest!

That double negative in the

"What NOT to expect"

Slide is driving me mental.

You can't prefix a sentence with the word no, and ask us not to expect them

"don't expect no microtransactions"

So we should expect them?

Fledgling game studio Playtonic, currently working on a “spiritual successor” to classic Nintendo 64 platformer Banjo-Kazooie, says it knows what Rare is working on – and that fans will be satisfied.

Purchased by Microsoft in 2002, the legendary developer had been creating titles in the Kinect Sports series, but many gamers have been desperate to see Rare return to its glory days, when it produced lively platform adventures such as Donkey Kong Country, Banjo-Kazooie and Conker’s Bad Fur Day. Playtonic, formed by six ex-employees of Rare, still has contact with its old employer, which is based only a few miles away.

“I still chat to them, I know what they were working on when I left last year,” says Playtonic’s studio head, Gavin Price, who worked for Rare for 20 years, having joined as a tester in the 1990s. “It sounds really good.”
