Yup, not to the point that it's a problem (but it will annoy enough people in the early game for them to stop playing), but hardly the best way it could have been designed either.

Much like the narrative.

and the dungeons.

and the stamina bar.

and the clothes.

and the stables.

and the rain

and the koroks

and the music (besides the standouts of terray town and hyrule castle)

and yes, even the shrines. Half, if not more, are either 'you have already proven yourself' shrines or combat shrines. Calling some of the actual puzzles 'puzzles' is also pushing it, to put it politely.

There is plenty to nitpick and improve upon in BotW, as good as it is, and as glad as I am for the return to open design.

  Reveal hidden contents

Mario 64 didn't have this many nitpicks for me though. Nor did Zelda OOT. ;) They both remain in my top 5, BotW wouldn't be in my top 10, sorry.

Seriously? Man, you are coming across like an idiot right now.

I have to admit, I've been avoiding the Zelda thread, because people are spoiling shit left right and centre, but once I've completed it I will return to the thread and have an in depth discussion about all these points.

It did. Several years ago. It was called Nuts and Bolts.

Speaking of that game, remember when N&B actively took a dump on collectathons of old in the opening?

Now people are criticising YL for being a collectathon...?

EDIT: disclaimer - I have only a passing interest in Banjo so I may not know what I'm on about

Aye, a mod should feel free to move the Zelda stuff.

To be fair, the rain is annoying. You should be able to get climbing boots with some sort of spikes or grips which allow you to climb whatever the weather.

The fact a solution never arises, apart from having more stamina which still doesn't work for large cliffs is the complaint there.

I love the idea of wandering around in the rain, and the sound and air of rain in real life, so it's a real shame in Zelda I can only stop and wait for it to go to away 9 times out of ten.

Much like the items breaking, it's a small odd bit of realism that doesn't make much sense to have the way it's implemented that they seemingly went for.

Tom, feel free to chat in whichever BotW thread whenever.

Sterling is an ex-pat and ex Destructoid reviewer who struck out on his own with a patreon. He can be ok, but he can also be a berk. He's best pals with Colin Moriarty, another ass clown, who somehow even ended up on Joe Rogans podcast after being forced to quit kinda funny games, another substandard youtube outlet (who dont even talk about news, and are so endlessly fascinated by their own daily activities that they cant discuss games without chortling at each others boring exploits).

Yeah, they're kind of shit.

I actually feel quite glad I don't know, or care, about a single person mentioned in that post.

It really is, it's an adventure game. It's not a reductionist term, it's an aggrandising term. Zelda games are adventures, they embrace that whole exploring spirit of adventure. It's a positive description by me that you're somehow taking as a bad thing for absolutely no reason.

I'll explain why. It's because in the first post I responded to, you were questioning why they needed weapon degradation and stamina in an arcade adventure. The fact that that is not what it is is why those features work within the game. If the game was as simple as Uncharted, which is an arcade adventure, fair enough. But it isn't. It takes from games like Skyrim, Dark Souls, Far Cry 2, Portal and Halo. None of those are arcade adventures. It takes elements from Dragon's Dogma and Minecraft. Neither of those are arcade adventures. And it wraps it all up in a Zelda bow. I didn't mean to sound harsh, but until you've played it and experienced it first hand, not through reviews, not through walk throughs, not through let's plays, it's really hard to understand just what they have crafted here. It's like 15 years of game design distilled into one handy package, and to hand wave it away as just another arcade adventure rubbed me the wrong way.

Sterling is an obnoxious, self-serving twat, and I look forward to the day that enough people realize it to stop providing him with a lucrative platform for spreading his crap.

And, to be clear, I've not played YL so he could be right on the money with 2/10 for all I know - but his delivery and manipulation of things like this are what I object to.

Not unless this is utterly broken, unplayable, a complete buggy abomination of a game running at 20fps and with a sub 64 bit resolution.

If that's a 2/10, what would make something a 1!?

If it included Blinx the Cat.

I must admit, I'd never really heard of Jim Sterling until his recent 'controversies.' So obviously he's doing something right.

In order for Jim Sterling to go away, only one person needs to tire of him.

James Stanton.

Right, I was misinformed.   That 7/10 was ludicrous but the 2/10 is even worse considering he know it would affect the Metacritic.

Exactly, if he just didnt like it, he'd have given it a 4 or a 5.   a 2/10 is purely attention seeking.

They must be so proud.  I bet publishers are starting to think twice about sending stuff to these people.

Out of curiosity, is your opinion of him because of his BotW score, or other stuff as well?
