Playtonic's Yooka-Laylee

It's funny listening to US games journalists who have no nostalgia at all for the Rare N64 games or Rare's sense of humour. At the time I only had an N64 and read N64 Magazine religiously so ended up thinking the games were a lot more popular than they actually were.

This is pretty much the equivalent of myself going into a FIFA thread and stating "What's this football thing all about eh? kicking a ball about? What a load of fucking shit and they make video games based on this?!?"

Because I didn't hear about this game before, checked it out and came to this conclusion? Or have we switched to being a fanboy forum where only gushing is allowed?

That's great! I'm also glad that you shared with us that it looks about as much fun as rubbing your knob on a cheese grate. Very insightful, yes.

This isn't the same thing as fanboy gushing where everything has to be all about blind hype. I simply pointed out that your post is quite a good example of a drive-by shit post.

You came in, saw it was completely nothing of interest to you and let us all know, that's useful? I guess?

Also, yes. That Giantbomb video is so so so bad. The thing with games that distinguishes them from other media is the fact that they're interactive - I'm stating the obvious here yes - and in order for them to 'work' correctly, or at least have the creators intent conveyed, they require human interaction.. and often the human on the other end is an utterly impatient moron who thinks their shitty experience is defacto because it's never their fault.. it's the fault of the game. Do you want the game to entirely explain everything to you? or keep it opaque because working stuff out is half the fun? I'm not attempting to be elitist with a 'get gud' attitude, it's just often people need to open their minds even just a tiny bit.

and now the faux not real apology as a parting passive aggressive shot to indicate you think the person is being too sensitive.

You walked into a thread for a game you didn't know (fine), learnt what the genre/type of game was(fine) and knew you hated that genre(fine) and so instead of leaving the thread (which would be fine) you decided to post about your ignorance (not fine).

Hope that helps sweetie :D

I'm still looking forward to playing it, but I think it's clear from the gameplay videos I've seen that the same kind of issues that Banjo-Tooie had with large, empty worlds with tonnes of backtracking & occasionally fiddly controls are present in this spiritual sequel too.

That isn't a fatal objection to me, but I can understand if other gamers don't have the nostalgia for the Banjo formula to overlook such rough edges, & I do admit, it would have been nice if Playtonic could have designed the game without them.

Maybe that was asking too much though?  Making a game that looks like Banjo-Kazooie is probably much easier than making a game that plays as good or better.

Did you write the Big Book of Rllmuk Etiquette? Can I get a signed copy?

That could have been me playing that rolling logs bit. I liked Banjo-Kazooie up to a point but I'm not very good at that type of platformer and I always get so friggin annoyed with them. Watching it was almost painful.

I better stick to RPG's :(

Yeah, I guess. When I saw it I thought it was some kind of shitty budget title but didn't realise it had turned into a forum darling. My bad. We'll see how it fares in the GOTY lists.

Oh I also don't think especially high of this lol but I'm nice about it you know. You gotta be nice when you slag off a game.

dontchaknow?

Played about an hour of this with the kids last night. It is *so* Banjo, collectathons, eyes on everything as characterisation, and gibberish vocals. Haven't unlocked enough of the abilities to get a real feel for it but it plays a nicely nostalgic N64 way thus far. Seems to take a surprisingly long time to load (PS4 with most recent game update) but that might get sorted now it's out properly. I was super crap at the retro racing arcade game in the opening level though - seemed way too sensitive for me to control.

Wasn't a backer - got my copy late last week from Base - but am optimistic that it'll be a good game with the kids. It is very old-fashioned but with shinier graphics so it will doubtless have many of the faults of older platformers too - dodgy camera, annoying narrow platforms etc so probably best to avoid if those things grind your gears.

I've played it for about 4 hours and I'm really enjoying it so far. Expanded the first level further, defeated the boss and I'm onto the second level. It's just a nice looking, excellent sounding, bright and cheerful platformer. Opened up some moves and the main characters are good fun to control and the gameplay is solid. Mario Odyssey will obviously piss on it, Mario Odyssey will piss on everything, but it definitely delivers what it set out to do. It's a bit better than I expected to be honest.

And the camera has been absolutely fine. What are the complaints about?

Rented this from Boomerang on PS4. I was going to wait for it on Switch, but didn't realise it was getting a physical release for some reason, so thought I might as well play it now.

It feels a bit lifeless really. The first stage seems like an empty wasteland, like it's unfinished. Hmm.

This surely has the worst character shadow in recent memory. It seems to get bigger and darker the further away from the ground you are.

Light sources cast a proper shadow. Which looks nice, but is shit for judging your jumps, so they've bunged that extra black circle "shadow" in there too.

I wouldn't call the first stage lifeless to be honest, there's basically a task to do everywhere you look. It's sprawling though, I'm forcing myself to be very methodical because I think it'd be easy to lose your bearings.

The camera isn't great and the movement feels just a little too slippery but it's pretty much what you'd expect I think. It's very loyal to the formula of the old Rare games so if that's what you're looking for I don't think you'd have any complaints. If you didn't like them then nothing here will change your mind.

Its a gameplay mechanic, so you know where you're going to land. 3D Mario games use it too.

This game also has a more automated camera, so I'd recommend not fighting it too much with the right stick. Use R1 to centre it behind instead.

Sweet lord.

You should know by now that it is forbidden to criticise this classic game, Nap. People were calling Jim Sterling a cunt for giving it a bad review (without playing it), ffs.
