I am more than a bit obsessed by this at the moment:

Amrew Demkew by Hailu Mergia, some Ethiopian Moog and Organ basher, and it is blinking flip amazing. I listen to it at least twice every day to try and absorb some of its power. It could be working...although I couldn't locate the world music thread, so unconfirmed. It probably deserves its own thread anyway.

Now, is this World Music? I hate most reggae, so it might be reggae. It's in the world, so it probably counts:

I always think this sounds like the theme tune of some DS game.

I know there was a world music thread because I remember posting some Mahmoud Ahmed in there.

Always worth a repost though, especially if you're looking for more Ethiopian rhythms. The first in particular is so unbelievably groovy, you might have to develop new vertebrae to allow your body to fully express its appreciation.

I was bored this evening so thought I'd sign back in. Have people heard the Ata Kak album? Awesome Tapes re-released it earlier this year (good article on it here), originally released in 1994 but unless you were scouring the tape stalls in Ghanian markets you won't have a copy:

I like the Mbongwana Star "From Kinhasa" album too, featuring ex-members of Staff Benda Bilili. Konono No.1 feature on the album too and it doesn't sound really like anything else, there's lots of electronics and dance music influences without ever sounding like it's cultural tourism on the part of the Western producer. I'm seeing them tomorrow at Rich Mix which should be excellent.

Africa Express' version of Terry Riley's In C featuring several musicians from Mali (and Damon Albarn) works really well:

I think this got re-released late last year on Now-Again, badass garage rock from the 70s out of Zambia by Ngozi Family:

I've done a 3 part mix of music from the Balkans, taking in stuff from Slovenia/Serbia/Bosnia/Montenegro/Bulgaria/Macedonia & Greece. I got really into this music about 10 years ago reading Garth Cartwright's wonderful Princes Amongst men and have been hooked since. Lots of horns and 5/8 time, some surprisingly amazing drum breaks too.

No it's just on mixcloud but it's also all time stamped so you can see what track is playing.

Cheers, I managed to sneak a quick listen to the first one this morning while the kids were in the shower. I mostly listen at work though and can't stream there. Any more info on that Amira track? "zeni no zeni" I think it was.

She's Bosnian, did an album of Roma music in a jazzy style. It's a bit over-produced but very stylish in a lounge way. From an album called Amulette that's about 4 years old roughly.

Don't know Lepa Brena, Zok, will check it.

 

Still gutted years later I lost a usb this old dude with a pony-tail in Belgrade gave me of a few gb of Jugo rock that he'd ripped himself from vinyl.
