So friend. Much forum love.

Anyway, yeah, I wasn't directly comparing them, I was making the point that good level design requires the level itself to have ways of informing the player about where they are.

One of the ways is good land marking that the player can recognise. Actually, the Desert / Jaku level does a great job of this because it dumps a huge crashed star destroyer right in the centre of the map, which the rest of the level kinda hangs off in terms of navigation. You can just look to it and immediately know where you are.

Secondly, you can also work out where you are through lighting, architectural styles and the like. Certain areas have a different feel which is immediately recognisable and unique to that location.

Endor doesn't have any of that. Yeah, sure, its supposed to represent the forest moon from the movie, but that didn't stop the level designers dumping a huge landmark in the desert level, did it? Why not put the huge shield generator from the movie in the centre of the map? Might go some way to help locate where the fuck you are. That's all I'm saying. At the moment, its a confusing mess and a terrible map to play because of it.

I haven't played overwatch myself, and I can gamble that it is probably fucking brilliant, but i'd just like to wade in to mention that the best BF maps do not colour code, or design around circular motion, or even physical balance. BF (and Battlefront, by proxy) maps are designed with a deeper,  more complicated philosophy than most FPS games. It's why BF is better than all other titles regardless of whether they lean more hardcore or provide more action. BF is the videogame equivalent of something like 3D chess. Other games might be faster or more realistic or more bombastic. That's not BF. BF is balance. It rewards patient play. Observance, communication, dedication. If you have a map where it is difficult to get your bearings, thats just a different way to play..

Say what you want about how shallow the gameplay is, or how you may have wanted it to just be Battlefield: Star Wars rather than the arcadey thing it was, but goddamn this game is good looking and totally, utterly nails the feeling of being 'in' Star Wars. Although Chewie looked shit in that trailer.

Aye I've got a few snaps I'll put up when the dvr behaves. The trench is done really well I think, it's basically 3 people are selected to run through a series of checkpoints and the rest fly above taking out fighters. If the 3 in the trench get wiped out another 3 are selected to take their place. The trench itself is windy and has various obstacles to avoid so its not just a simple straight run to the port.

Pretty impressed.

I love this game, having started playing it again. It's so different in feel to Battlefield yet tense and fast all the same. Live, Die, Repeat. The Death Star levels, which I only played briefly this morning, are pretty stellar and the new mode is a great progression. I'm still terrible at it.

Just had my 1st successful trench run, love it. Picked up the Hero Token and then did the checkpoints from the 3rd right to the end, for the first time playing this game actually had adrenaline rush haha! Takes a few times to get used to the layout of the trenches cos there's quite a few turns and twists up and down but when you pull it off it's great. DVR'd the last 30 seconds or so below...didn't know how to embed but check it out ! :D

My brother is keen to pick it up after playing it at mine on Friday. Physical copy was £21.99 in Sainsburys today - any other deals on worth looking at or is that the best price out there at the moment?

  • 1 month later...

So played this with a few chums after they picked it up for £10 on Amazon and it's free DLC/x4 xp weekend.

We struggled with the stupid UI for ages (terrible system for a UI focused game) - are they any game modes recommended beyond Walker Assault? All the rest feel a bit...shit...given the simplistic game design. (Sort of like Supremacy).

Heroes feel a bit ridiculous though - and are up far too often (not that I ever saw a token - are they randomly placed?)

While enjoyed it, and will keep playing on and off amongst other things, not sure it's worth full price and it's hard to understand how people are still playing it months and months later.

It struggles with the same UI problems Battlefield does, we always had problems getting into a group etc and it's a shame they never really did a rehaul of it.

With regards to the game itself, I revisit it when I want a Star Wars fix but that's about it really, it scratches the itch in terms of visuals/sound etc but after a few games I remember how shallow it really is. Supremacy/Walker Assault are the only modes I really bothered with to be honest because of the spectacle, the Death Star DLC Battle Station mode is also quite cool but the new  modes offered in the other DLCs are a bit lacklustre.

The tokens for Heroes/Vehicles have a pool of possible spawns that you would learn after a while, still a problem though because everyone else learns the placement as well, so for example if I was to do Walker Assault on Hoth, when it comes to the last phase as rebels it wouldn't be uncommon to see 5-6 people stood still in one spot waiting for the snowspeeder pickup...really wish they'd have done it like BF1 and made it something you can pick off spawn. Think I'e got 100+ hours in it and haven't played a hero more than a handful of times.

VR Talk aside, the new Infiltration mode is pretty epic, it's a tense affair especially the first phase when you fly the U-Wing, got so close a few times only to be shot down :/ Like they take the idea they put in in the trench run and applied it here, works really well.

Or you could carry on talking about VR. Great. Someone tag me when we get back to talking about the actual game.

Cheers.

Just tried splitting it out into a different thread but the forum wouldn't let me. I ain't ticking all those boxes again. Soz!

EDIT: oh, it did work. Stupid software.
