Thanks for the responses. Clearly a bit of confusion with some of the questions about ownership in 12 months or further in the future, which I will try to sort out if I run this poll again in the future. But the headline results are interesting for people who like stats'n'stuff.

I have been planning to update the console ownership poll that I conducted last year for some time now, and this seems as good a time as any to do it. All the current gen consoles are very well established now, and it would be interesting to see how ownership has changed or is expected to change.

As an open-ended question, it would be good to know which game(s) made you purchase the current-gen machines you own. I'm not asking for your favourite game on the machine, more the game(s) which made you want to buy the machine. In my case, for example, these would be:

PS4: Battlefield 4

Wii U: New Super Mario Bros. U

If you put your answers in a reply I will compile these.

Would it not just be easier to have a poll at the top on which console you own?

Scarp that, just re-read your post.

PS4: Watch_Dogs (although it got delayed I did not cancel my release day pre-order. I basically played nothing for the first 12 months except AC Black Flag, Destiny then gave the PS4 the kick it needed to really get me playing the console.)

WiiU: Mario Kart 8 (2nd attempt I sold the first console after a few months because it was never used, the 1st was purchased for Super Mario Bros U).

No specific games made me buy a Wii U. I bought one because Nintendo games.

Same here, and for the 3DS too.

I bought a Vita purely due to the love for it on this forum. Which it turns out was entirely justified.

Wii U: Bayonetta 2, Wonderful 101, Xenoblade Chronicles X, but also because cheap Argos Windwaker HD deal.

3DS: Zelda ALBW. Also, because cheap Amazon Black Friday deal.

I don't *plan* to buy either a PS4 or a Bone, so I left my future plans at just the Wii U. Indeed, I'm wondering if the Wii U might well be the last console I buy before switching back to PC gaming. I must have dozens of PS3, 360 and Wii games representing thousands of hours of play time in my Pile o'Shame, including several RPGS/JRPGs/SRPGS like Skyrim, Xenoblade, Valkyrie Chronicles, Disgaia...

However, I expect something totally compelling might crop up on one of the two remaining platforms (a new Mass Effect, Dishonored, Just Cause or other sequel); or there'll be a cheap Amazon deal. But PC ports are pretty common these days.

PS4: Nothing in particular, but it's quite clear that Destiny & Bloodborne are the current standout titles.

Xbox One: Forza Horizon 2.

I note that there are fewer xbox 1 / ps 4 owners who plan to have owned both by the end of the generation than currently own both. A confusing poll?

Wii U: Bought just for general Nintendo stuff and having a good price (£184 with NSMBU + NSLU about 18 months back), NSMBU, SM3DW, Nintendoland, Wii Party U and a few others were bought with it. I've barely played them or on the machine in general to be honest.

Vita: Having given PS+ a trial for a PS3 I'd recently bought in early 2013, soon the amount of PS+ and cross buy games made it daft not to give this a try a few months later. Things like Gravity Rush & Velocity Ultra (both PS+) looked interesting, Motorstorm RC and Everybody's Golf (both in sales, the former cross buy) also seemed like they'd be great on a handheld - and are.

PS4: If or when I pick one up this will just be a value proposition based again on weight of cross buy things I already own, or general PS+ buildup.

Had all the previous consoles. Have none of the current consoles. PC has taken over as my primary platform.

I plan to own a PS4 for the new Rock Band, though. I also want a Wii U at some point for exclusive Nintendo goodness. No timescale for when, but within 12 months seems likely.

I guess I still plan to own all the consoles I currently own in 12 months...

You might plan to only have owned them.

...

I guess the simplest way to describe what I am asking is, in the present tense, which console do you or have you owned? Then imagine yourself in 12 months. At that point, which consoles will you own or have previously owned at that point? And then rolled out for the future as a whole: which consoles do you think you will have owned at some point?

Speaking for myself, there may be consoles which I plan to buy in the next year, and others which I expect to own one day, even if it is at the end of the machine's lifespan to mop up on the essential titles.

PS4: Battlefield 4 (although I utterly hated it, traded it in and my PS4 became a Pinball Arcade player for 12 months, even though I hate Pinball Arcade's ridiculous interpretation of ball physics)

Bone: Forza 5

Wii U: Pikmin 3

3DS: As I bought it on launch, I'm not entirely sure. Syphillis possibly.

Vita: As 3DS.

Wii U: Rayman Legends sold me the console, but the game that actually came with the console (as Legends got delayed and became multi-platform) was Nintendoland, which I bore of quite quickly. Also on the usual promise of good Nintendo stuff. It's been iffy so far.

Xbox One: Came with Forza, which I dislike as I hate simulation racers, but it was either that or football, which I hate (playing) even more. Also on the promise of Microsoft eventually sticking their thumbs out their behinds. Also came wth Kinect. I still own no other game for it. Oh, except for free Limbo which is already played on 360, and yet another Forza. Which at least is a little more arcadey. The indie game that looks like a classic black and white era cartoon has tons of promise. Sunset Overdrive and Fantasia are the first retail games I still want. The console came also came with Kinect.

PS4: Came with...uh...oh yes Resogun! Which is fantastic. I also got to play Flower for the first time on it. I've bought no games but PS+ has provided genuine enjoyment. Disgaea 5 will probably be the first retail game I get.

I'll write handhelds later, need to grab a coffee.

Wii U: I bought the Mario Kart 8 pack which coincided with a nice price drop. I REALLY wanted to get the console with Super Mario 3D World but managed to hold out. Of course as soon as I bought it, I went wild for the Wii U back catalog that's full of absolute gems and Super Mario 3D World was just as amazing as I had hoped.

With the unfortunate poor sales of the machine and the super high quality of the software, I've started "Collecting" all the Nintendo first and "second" party games. Nintendo are on a roll at the moment and I feel it's worth investing my money in the whole lot.

Playstation 4: Lovely machine. Nice selection of games and my "go to" current generation machine. Couldn't be happier really, love the UI and everything about it. Destiny was the game that coaxed me into it.

Xbox One: I really wanted to just own one of the two competing "current gen" machines. I may forgo a few exclusives but It nicer to just stick to one platform/one UI/one friends-list/social network and I planned to go PS4 this time round. Halo:MCC meant I had to get an Xbox One. I love Halo. It's most likely that I'll just use the machine for exclusives. Ori is a nice game.

My dear, I still own consoles I had 12 YEARS ago... *flounce*

PS4: no specific game prompted the purchase. Had planned to upgrade from PS3 so traded in a load of old games for credit to pay for the bulk of the new console last summer. However, did end up with Wolfenstein: The New Order pack, so that was a great way to start the new gen. Sort of stalled since, but Alien: Isolation, what little I've played of it, is very good. Most wanted for the console: Uncharted 4, Fallout 4 and Arkham Knight. Oh, okay, you got me, and LEGO Jurassic World.

Wii U: New Super Mario Bros. initially, but really Mario Kart 8.
