Audible...and other audiobook delivery mechanisms that may or may not be available

Working my way through the J.G. Ballard short stories. Mostly very enjoyable.

Can anyone recommend me a gripping sci-fi epic? I want interesting characters, twists and turns and preferably a bit dark. I have another credit to spend.

Here is a list of things that you must listen to then, and my suggested order. AADB is not a Culture novel, but it's excellent:

Consider Phlebas

Use of Weapons

Excession

Against A Dark Background

Look to Windward

Hydrogen Sonata

There are others, but you may have had your fill before then. Although probably not, as each of the above is brilliant.

Started an audible account and took up the Ballard stories for my first listen. Really enjoying listening to it through my lunch. Was going to get a culture novel buy I'm halfway through book 1. Next month I might go for book 2.

Ooh, really? I've got that all lined up and ready to go for when I finish the Ballardathon.

Ha! Yes it is, have you listened to it Zok?

No! Sorry, I thought I'd replied to this. The mind boggles at what that will sound like as an audiobook.

I decided to take a break from Sci-Fi* and try a Fantasy epic off the back of loving Game of Thrones and chose The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie read by Steven Pacey. The delivery is wonderful and I'm finding myself looking forward to my commute!

*I will get to your suggestions at some point, ZOK, thanks

Gutted I didn't see or think of ordering Ballard for my free download. I spunked it on the Time Travellers guide Medieval England, which is fun stuff thankfully.

I'm doing the old fashioned and reading Ballards shorts instead. What's everyone's favourite? Concentration City is the best one I've read so far. Gotta love the mad fucker and his early obsession with exotic lizard women and singing spider plants.

Man, there are so many. I'm not so keen on Concentration City mind you, I prefer Billennium, which is similar.

Probably my favourite is The Voices of Time, although that was read by an American on the audiobook which was disappointing, it really needs an English voice. I love The Watch Towers, The Drowned Giant, The Terminal Beach, The Comsat Angels, Theatre of War, Storm Bird Storm Dreamers...and a million others.

All the Vermillion Sands ones of course, although my favourite one of those is The Cloud-Sculptors of Coral D, maybe because he gets the girl at the end for once!

Was bored at work and decided to listen to The Blade Itself on YouTube, it's fucking great! :) I've read it before, but the narrator does a great job and it's such a visual book it works really well as an audiobook. Tempted to spend my spare credit on Before They Are Hanged...

I have received no invite to this mythical BOGOF :(

That's weird. It's a banner on the main site too. Have you credits in your account? Once I'd spent all mine I got the message;

"We're sorry...

This offer is available only to AudibleListener® members with 1 or more credits."

I cancelled my subscription to Audible...and not a sniff of an offer of a discounted membership yet.

I guess they just don't want me back. :(

In other news, the read of William Gibson's The Peripheral is very nice!

Cool, Black and Blue is a great novel. Can you download Soundcloud tracks or is it streaming only?

I'm pretty sure you can, but only if the publishing profile chooses to. I've grabbed music tracks from it before, but doesn't look like it's available on this one.
