I finished The Stone Man today.

It was utterly woeful. After a promising start it became worse and worse and by the end I couldn't wait for it to end.

I need to lose my will to carry on with things I'm not enjoying.

Amyway, at the end of the book the author comes on and in the most pompous way basically says how amazing he thinks the book is and demands a review. I turned it off and got a refund because it rubbed me so much the wrong way.

From now on I won't try and finish books I'm hating!

I am giving a five star recommendation to Robert Heinlein's Expanded Universe vols 1&2. They are read by some guy called Bronson Pinchot, who has a lovely voice so deliciously curmudgeonly that it's hard to believe it's not Heinlein himself.

Also a real treat to hear the master musing about himself as a writer. I've always loved RH, but this stuff is making me have a real literary crush on him.

I am currently listening to The Last Kingdom, which is a historical fiction novel set during the Viking invasion of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms (there is a BBC adaptation showing which I haven't seen).

It's great! Sometimes I have found Bernard Cornwell's stuff can get bogged down a little too much in minutiae of battles, here that isn't the case. Fantastic atmosphere! The gruff, world-weary northern English-accented delivery of the reader is perfect for the book, which is told as if it were the memoirs of an older Anglo-Saxon warrior reflecting on being a child during the events of the novel.

Yes. I did too. I have an account that I've not subbed to in a few years. Stuck in the new code and it gave me 3 months for 99p each month.

WHICH I bought Brian Blesseds Autobiography with and it is one of the most entertaining things I have ever listened to. It's read by him obv.

The opening story where he describes one of his companions 'taking a shit' half way up Everest had me howling.

Finished The Player of Games last night, god I love that book. Guy reading it was pretty good, but... Bade pronounced bad? Really? And the empire of Azad seemed to be in China...! I always felt that Azad would have been better met as a British type of empire really. Stiff upper lip (depravity hidden underneath).

Got my new credit! Signed up for the 99p offer. I want the new Mindy Kaling (the first is great btw!) but it's short so feel I need some 20 hour epic to make the most of my 99p.

Any suggestions for some good long sci fi / fantasy things? Is the Blade Itself good?

I'm listening to Atomic Awakening: A New Look at the History and Future of Nuclear Power by James Mahaffey at the moment, and it's pretty good. The narrator is a bit like the most cliched American voice you could imagine, but once you get used to that it's a very enjoyable reading. It's a great coverage of everything nuclear, and even though there is a lot of science in it that goes completely over my head I feel like I'm learning a lot too, and the anecdotal stories of the developments through time are great. Definitely recommended if you have an interest in nuclear power.

I went for it, like you say the voice is ridiculous, especially when he goes into first person and says things like "my personal favourite was 'pandemonium'" (when talking about suggested names for the new element), you just don't believe that the narrator can have emotions or a sense of humour. The book is excellent though, cheers!

Okay you hep cats, I just tried a few 99p codes on Audible, and none of them worked. So I went to live chat and said they wouldn't work, and they asked me what email I had got. I said I got them off a voucher site, and they told me I could only use one that was emailed to me. And then I asked them if they could email me one, and they said they couldn't...but they did give me 90 days for free instead!

Hooray for Audible! :hat:
