Metroid Prime is timeless.

 

Replaying it for the fourth time and got to that brilliant bit after the Sheegoth fight where Phendrana Drifts opens up and you find your way into the Space Pirate research facility. The abandoned, snow covered landscapes give way to dark, oppressive corridors, the music gains a foreboding edge and then suddenly you come face to face with a Space Pirate. Somehow I'd forgotten that it happened in this sequence and where the facility was so I still had that "oh shit" moment when I realised what I was walking into. It's pure atmosphere.

 

It also can't be said enough how great the scanning mechanic is. To this day I'm not sure there's been a better way devised for delivering detailed plot and 'lore' details, with it entirely in the player's control how much of it they want to know. I'm reading pretty much all of the entries this time through.

I want to get in on this in the next year, too. :D I remember when these SD adapters first emerged there were some compatibility issues with some games, possibly due to the faster loading speeds. Has there been an active firmware/fix scene and how is it in 2020?

I've just completed Thousand Year Door again on Wii via component cable for the first time since it was released. It looks incredible, only some the blurry edges on the characters give away how old it is. I'd forgotten how nice the Wavebird controller is as well and after years of disappointing Paper Mario games it was nice to be reminded of how great they were. Once I'd finished it I tried Baten Kaitos which I didn't put much time into when it first came out and thanks to pre-rendered backgrounds has not aged very well at all.

Kaico recently provided Randomised Gaming with a unit of their Gamecube adapter to review and while there are other adapters out there I must stress, I was really impressed with the results. I went down the route of a Action replay disc and a SD media loader to boot SWISS on Gamecube. You can burn a bootable SWISS disc, but getting the mini CDs and a burner that can write to them is rather tricky.

 

 

 

I bought one of these adapters last week from Amazon after putting it off for ages because of the price and I'm glad I did, I've had a great bank holiday weekend of solid Gamecube gaming, the games look incredible.

Being a technophobe I was a bit worried about setting it up but it was just a case of plugging it in the back and you're good to go and it comes with a 12 month warranty. Recommended!

Yes it is a very nice bit of kit and one that works really well with SWISS on cube. We were lucky to be provided one to review, I understand the newer version have the later updates of GC Video on them, but I haven't used a newer version. Using homebrew software like SWISS can be a bit tricky at first, but once you have the needed equipment it fairly straight forward I keep meaning to do a video guide to SWISS at some point as well.

 

The cost of official component cables these days, means that while not that cheap HDMI adapter make a very good alternative.

I just bought an OSSC (already have framemeister) and was wondering if I really need my cube official component lead any more, as i've an RGB lead.   Does feeding 480p compared to 480i (or 576 pal ofc) make any difference to your output if its coming over hdmi?

I think I might need a GC loader after all, if only to play around with a few things I never bothered with before, such as:

 

- Game Boy Interface, so the Game Boy Player is a bit more, erm, playable 

 

- The SD Gecko & SD2SP2 adapters I picked up years ago to facilitate easy use of other homebrew (such as some arcade board emulation and whatever else the community has cooked up over the years)

 

- Learning more about the GC library in general. Truthfully - I look at peoples recommendations and favourite games and there's barely anything that appeals. I did play the hell out of the Monkey Balls, Resi 4 and a small handful of other games back in the day (Iike Metroid Prime) but the Game Boy Player was really the main reason it stayed relevant to me (despite the controller being poor for 2D games). Off the top of my head - F-Zero GX, Viewtiful Joe, Luigi's Mansion, Killer 7, MG: Twin Snakes - every one of these games left me cold and remain pretty much unplayed to this day. Mario Sunshine, The Zeldas and the smattering of multiplatform games I'm aware of don't appeal to me either (the Zelda Collection that was bundled with my console has never once been booted up)... But there *must* be a healthy amount of smaller, stranger unique GC games out there I know nothing about that might be fun to explore, such as..

 

- Cubivore! I recently fell in love with the newly unearthed original N64 game and now want to experience it in English - but it turns out the GC port is an outrageously expensive rarity, so fuck that. It's exactly the kind of title I want an ODE for.. And PN03, I did always want to experience that one.

 

So maybe it's high time for me to finally give this literally most neglected and underused console a second wind.

Looks amazing when installed too, you pop the lid and it’s like there was always an SD Card slot In there. 


This is it installed (I’ve kept my original black JPN GC with a drive). Also, recently I learned Swiss supports virtual memory cards!

Technically it was out in November for us, but I remember buying this with my first student loan cheque as my first ever games console. 

 

I got Luigi, SMB, Rogue Leader and Wave Race. I'd have not have got half of them if it hadn't massively dropped in price before it came out. Thanks, Nintendo!

£129 was just ridiculously good value.

 

I bought one from Game in early 2004 iirc. They had some offer for a GameCube with a couple of shit games for like £150. I overheard the manager telling a couple he’d swap the games for any others, so I asked if I could have it too. I got Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles and Sonic Heroes, but returned them and got Mario Kart Double Dash and Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes instead.

 

Had so much to catch up on. Wonderful console. Possibly my favourite retro console ever. And that controller.

I got my cube (indigo, of course) with Resident Evil and Super Monkey Ball. The first time I'd ever bought a console at launch, and I'd prepped for it by importing a few extra pads from PlayAsia, including the wonderful Spice Orange one. RE was an absolute stunner, and 4-player Monkey Ball, particularly Monkey Target, was a thing of legend.

 

It was my second year of Uni, first in a shared house rather than halls. So many fond memories of the Gamecube during that era!
