Playing RDR at the moment for the first time, catching up on games I've missed, and I've been thoroughly enjoying it. Not sure if I'd have it in my top 20 but it's a wonderful environment and setting, the wild west hanging on to its old ways, beautifully realised.

That was exactly the thought that came into my mind; of all MGS 3's flaws, it's the super-awkward controls and clunky stealth systems underlying everything that most ensure I can never get into it. At least RDR was playable - its naff story and characters did their best to undermine the experience, but while the combat was tame, the controls and general movement through the game were nice and smooth, which at least allowed me to enjoy the gorgeous, open environments. I wish MGS 3 were as clunky as RDR!

I'd argue that MGS is played at a far slower pace than RDR, though, so any clunkiness was more excusable, in my experience at least. I always found MGS quite precise anyway, from what I can remember. The biggest thing I remember about RDR, apart from the obnoxious protagonist, is banging into things with my horse. I finished it the first time I played it and thought it was good, but I've never understood why it's as acclaimed as it is. As I mentioned, I even tried replaying it earlier this year to see if I'd missed out on anything but it didn't do much for me. Having said that, apart from GTA V I've always found that Rockstar's output doesn't live up to the hype.

30. Shenmue II

It’s difficult to describe the brilliance of Shenmue II without discussing the merits of the original game, but Shenmue II stands on its own merits and is everything a sequel should be: bigger and arguably better, with streamlined gameplay aspects that improve the pacing and story involvement.

The sedate nature of the original is changed with the ability to fast forward time, and story events unfold with much more urgency, almost encouraging the player to rush through to the end and ignore all the wonderful distractions in the game’s incredibly entertaining version of Hong Kong.

Many games in a series can be played and enjoyed without experiencing the first instalment, such as even the Mass Effect series, but where Shenmue is a gloriously absorbing prologue, Shenmue II begins the story in earnest.

Full of brilliant, brilliant moments: learning Tai Chi from an old man in the park, catching leaves in a temple, chasing down street urchins, The Yellow Head building section, Lucky Hit, Disc 3…

The yearning gamers had for Shenmue III, more than just for the story to be finished, was perhaps if nothing else inspired by Shenmue II being something truly wonderful.

 

 

29. Super Metroid

Super Metroid is nothing less than an absolute masterclass of design, structure, pacing and presentation.

From the opening level that introduces you to the overall control of Samus with a blinding set piece, to the final credits sequence, the entire game literally drips atmosphere and the routes through each level make the entire world feel like a perfectly constructed and cohesive hole.

Abilities are introduced with a carefully measured pace, leaving you to only just remember the places you traversed earlier and that their previously inaccessible secrets can be finally revealed. There is backtracking of course, but here it feels like you are gradually being given the tools to explore and open up the world, rather than the world forcing you to follow a path backwards.

More impressive still is how the game’s environments, sound design, and music tell more of a story than any number of cut scenes or dialog, and the lonely trek through each area can feel like something quite beautiful. Dark Souls get’s a lot of praise for how it delivers its story to the player almost by a method of osmosis; Super Metroid did this years ago, and with even less dialog.

Nearly every modern set piece driven title owes it significant debt. One of Nintendo’s finest titles ever made, and an enduring legacy for the late Gunpei Yokoi.

 

 

 

28. Deus Ex

Freedom. As a concept in gaming, you would be forgiven for thinking it’s been a dirty word for a long time. And you can see why: all of the Uncharted and Call of Duty clones in recent times seem to not realise that those titles at least succeed despite their lack of freedom and on rails gameplay simply by being playtested to death and striving to be the most in-your-face thrill ride gaming versions of a big, dumb, popcorn worthy action movie that lack of player freedom can be conveniently forgotten.

However, we do not forget, and one game that can not be forgotten for championing player freedom above all else, at a time when that was still a concept that most publishers could get behind, was Deus Ex.

We’re not talking smoke and mirrors freedom here either, such as that offered by many modern titles as a concession to player decision (I’m looking at you, Little Sister harvesting “choice” in Bioshock…), but an honest to goodness First Person RPG where you can’t even shoot straight until you have mastered the requisite skills.

Lets get the negatives out of the way: the graphics are bad. Really bad. Like, spectacularly ugly. The voice acting also leaves a lot to be desired, especially the comedy and borderline (maybe not even borderline) racist accents. But you don’t come to Deus Ex for flash, or indeed for fancy. You come to Deus Ex so that you can play one of the single greatest RPGs ever made.

Just don’t bother putting points in swimming. It’s completely useless! That’s freedom to choose badly for you.

 

 

 

27. Super Mario Galaxy 2

I have to confess I have not yet got round to playing Super Mario Galaxy 2… Yeah I know I know… I actually have it sitting here literally begging to be played, but it’s taken a while to get through the backlog. Link’s Awakening is currently being worked through for example, and I’m less inclined to start a game right now that, to be fair, I know exactly what I’m getting after the first game, no matter how good. So I will have to admit defeat with this one and give you the words of minkymuskyslyoldstoatystoa, who enthuses about its brilliance in a way which could just as easily describe the original Mario Galaxy:

“An absolute delight. I would love to go back and play this for the first time again. Every time you

get to a new asteroid / planet, you wonder what on earth is coming next. It controls and looks beautiful, and it's so much fun.”

There is certainly an argument that more of the same can be not a good thing, but the sheer genius and wealth of ideas in the original Mario Galaxy means that if there was any overspill, much like with Majora’s Mask using unused ideas from Ocarina of Time, then the creation of a completely separate game or sequel is not only justified, but essential to see their glorious implementation.

 

 

 

26. Ico

Are games art? I honestly don’t have the time and space to answer that question here, but Ico is regularly held up as a champion to prove gaming’s credentials, and it’s easy to see why.

The stark and ageless visual design makes for perhaps one of the most bewitching fantasy landscapes in not just games, but any medium. The vast castles of moss and stone stretch from end to end of every area, and the towers soar skywards with a majesty that is nearly unmatched in gaming - the Assassin's Creed series that have towering real world monuments actually feel fake and unimpressive by comparison, as the ease of traversal in some ways ruins the mystery and awe of these structures.

In Ico every stone and every crag is felt, and scaling these foreboding castle walls feels like a privilege rather than a right. Rather than being able to free run roughshod over historical monuments, here it feels like the castle itself is a watchful guardian over the land, that has been, and always will be here, and your presence is thus tolerated rather than welcomed. Every new area you reach is a hard won battle against the castle itself.

The environments are a pleasure to traverse, and the requirement for helping your companion as you progress through each area can be at times frustrating, but every step of the journey has a great feeling of accomplishment. The simple but logical puzzles are spaced evenly throughout, and it is rare to get too stuck, which goes a long way to keep you absorbed in the game’s world.

Ico tells its story with virtually no dialogue or understanding of the characters, and above all else feels like stepping into a fairytale like no other, and would stand alone as a unique artefact of the medium in so many ways, were it not for the team having created another, even more impressive title...

Well, that's 2 of my top 10 out of the way, then! Sad to see Deus Ex and Shenmue 2 slipping down the rankings, but I'm glad to see them anyway. And glad to see Super Metroid rocketing up the rankings to a more sensible position this time around!

And Ico's lovely too, so altogether a very nice group of games. And a Mario, but I've never played it so there is a slight possibility it isn't rubs.

25. Grand Theft Auto V

Beating all other GTA titles and indeed Rockstar titles in the list, comes the ultimate crime spree simulator.

The mission structure, multiple excellent radio stations and chatty pre mission character development driving to destinations remains, but everything else is bigger, grander, and polished to within an inch of its life.

The sheer size, detail and utterly unrivalled scope of the game’s world is absolutely staggering. It perhaps has the most in common with San Andreas for having an entire state’s worth of locations to mess around in, but it goes so far beyond that game in nearly every aspect that it’s almost obscene.

The vast amount of money and development time piled into the project shows in every pore from the cleverness of the set pieces in each mission to the sense of fun that was sorely lacking from the previous instalment in the series.

Heists are the highlight, and the satisfaction of the planning and execution of these missions is fantastic.

There are definitely some problems, including some, surprisingly enough to say for GTA, morally dubious missions, and a large number of glitches as you would expect, and the odd boring errand quest, but taken as a whole this is a truly staggering achievement, and who knows what Rockstar will manage next.

(Maybe a playable female character for once? Radical I know…)

 

 

 

24. Street Fighter 2 (all editions)

Street Fighter IV and its iterations have many fans, myself among them, but plenty of purists would agree that the original Street Fighter 2 (probably in its Turbo edition) may still be the greatest fighting game ever made.

A tight and balanced roster of fighters, with some of the most iconic special moves in gaming history, and what effectively amounts to the finest crafted version of a complex rock paper scissors game in existence, makes Street Fighter 2 the very distilled essence of fighting game in its purest form.

I’m in serious danger of overusing superlatives here, but that would be entirely appropriate for a series that has iterations that follow the naming convention of Super Ex Plus Alpha Turbo, or whatever. Street Fighter 2 remains as playable now as it ever did when it was first released, and get two players in a room, add a crowd of onlookers, and you have gaming as spectator sport from a game that is now more than 20 years old.

And that should be celebrated.

 

 

 

23. Super Mario Kart

Still the best version of Mario Kart? Many would say so. I never actually played the SNES original back in the day, and when I have tried to play it more recently I was struck by how utterly unforgivingly difficult it is, with characters cheating more blatantly than any computer controlled characters have any right to.

However, this takes nothing away from the sheer brilliance of Super Mario Kart: courses are tightly designed and have a kind of twisted genius about them that makes for a steep but steady learning curve, that in my opinion was not matched in terms of track design until F-Zero X.

There is also a certain purity to the first Mario Kart that seems to have maybe been lost in the newer titles, with their abundance of tracks, characters, items and vehicles. It could be partly nostalgia that has placed it higher than all others on the list, but I like to think it is also down to a hankering for a simpler time, where all you needed was one kart, one road, and some green shells. And a vicious masochistic streak.

 

 

 

22. Rez

Rez is an utterly beautiful game. I don’t just mean in terms of visual design, which is itself utterly mesmerising, but in terms of the whole journey through it as a cohesive narrative and emotional experience.

To strip the game down to its constituent gameplay mechanics to focus on those would kind of miss the point, and do the game a disservice. We can talk about the framing of shots in for example a great film and discuss how they individually make for a great scene, but it’s all of these elements coming together that creates a great piece of artistic genius, and there is something about Rez that defies the traditional ways we would normally approach critical analysis of a “game” experience.

This might be just because so many games don’t try to do anything artistically new or original, and are so fixated on using traditional storytelling devices or having “realistic” or easily identifiable visual styles, that they don’t necessarily try to do things very differently from other mediums, in such a way that they can be judged on their own merits without being compared to them.

More than just a simple target shooting game, which the gameplay elements are at their core, Rez mixes visual stimulus and audio design with an evolving narrative that is hinted at through the way the music and landscapes evolve as you line up targets in time to the beat of the game’s constant rhythm.

Evolution is in fact a core concept of the game’s story, and the driving bass of the soundtrack and throbbing wireframes mimics your own heartbeat, in a beautiful illusion of synergy between human and machine.

Rez is a singularly perfect creation.

 

 

21. Half Life 2

The original Half Life has quite legendary status, introducing many innovations for its time, for example the novel idea of having interactive set pieces that happened around the player during play, which is kind of taken for granted today.

Half Life 2, for all it’s claims of being revolutionary when it was released, is a surprisingly similar game in many respects - physics innovation that is used for a couple of puzzles notwithstanding...

However, that said, Half Life 2 took the impressive world building of the original game and cranked it up tenfold. The opening section where you desperately scramble to get away from jackbooted guards is still a stand out moment and has absolutely unmatched atmosphere, that makes you feel that you are slap bang in the middle of the unfolding events of a dystopian science fiction novel.

The character design still seems unmatched by modern titles, and it seems literally staggering that Alyx, Barney, Dr. Kleiner et al. still seem to be more expressive and believable than has been managed by nearly every game in the last 10 years. They have a feeling of realism in their dialogue, and a sense of presence and purpose, that still makes them stand out today, and which many games can still learn from. I’m looking at you, Bioshock: Infinite...

Throughout the game there are an impressive number of incredible set pieces, though these would be vastly outstripped in many ways by some of those contained in Half Life 2: Episode 2, which is also notably perhaps the most polished and best constructed title in the Half Life universe.

Taken as a whole though, Half Life 2 and its episodes are a landmark in gaming for player involvement and set piece design, and have informed the design of many games since.

Well, I'm glad to see the second-best Mario Kart and the second-best Street Fighter doing well for themselves. But talk about a selection bookended with shite! The game responsible for really cementing as standard features in games the genre-destroying 'innovations' of its predecessor that are interactive cut-scenes and shitty, set-piece based action sequences; and the latest in a line of ever-worsening sandbox games which get ever more fixated on throwing away their freedom in order to tell some more awful story. Actually, those two games seem made for each other.

Primarily I'm gutted that the second-best game of all time and Half-Life 2 have swapped relative places since the last vote, though, and more significantly that it's been pushed out of the top 20. Rez woz robbed

Still, I'm looking forward to seeing Halo, Rock Band 3, Thief 2, Fallout 2, Little Big Adventure 2, Shadow of the Colossus, Portal, Full Throttle and Guardian Heroes in the top 20, as that can be the only reason none of them have appeared by now.

20. Rock Band 3

While I have not played any of the Rock Band series I admit, I am very familiar with Guitar Hero, and much of the pleasures contained in those games is repeated in Rock Band, albeit with more instruments, and a focus on group play.

People who may be critical of the original Guitar Hero might have asked, why not spend the time required to master it learning a real guitar? But that spectacularly misses the point. Everyone knows how easy it is to air guitar to your favourite tracks, and Guitar Hero just took that desire to a logical conclusion and made a brilliant game out of it.

Rock band simply evolves this into multiple instruments, collaborative play, and even specialist packages such as The Beatles edition. As I am less familiar with the series than others, here is Jolly to describe Rock Band 3, his favourite game of all time:

“A tiny percentage of the world's population will ever know what it feels like to be a rock star. To have thousands of people chant your name, best friends at your side while you perform miracles. For the rest of us, there is Rock Band. Many games try and put you in the shoes of someone else but none are as successful as this. Ideal for high score chasing, fingers-a-blur turning the impossible to the possible, or stick it on a lower difficulty and spend the evening prancing round your living room like a lunatic. Fancy a change? You can spend the night hammering at the drums, delicately dancing across the keyboard or singing until your lungs burst. Fancy learning how to play these songs for real? You can do that too. Rock Band is genuinely responsible for broadening my musical tastes. Songs I would never have given a second listen turn into firm favourites. It's perfect on your own, it's perfect with a group. It's perfect when you want a challenge, it's perfect when you don't. It's the absolute pinnacle of the music genre and for me, the greatest video game ever made.”

 

 

 

19. Metal Gear Solid

The first in the legendary series, and still the best? (Metal Gear Solid 5 has only just been released, so we shall see…)

Unlike the later entries in the Solid series, The original Metal Gear Solid still feels like a much more restrained proposition, which is saying something, considering the plot revolves around clones, nukes, mechs, conspiracies and all those gloriously silly and playful things we have come to associate with Hideo Kojima titles.

However, this is still an extremely solid (geddit) game underneath all the craziness, and despite refinements to the formulae over the years there is still something indefinable about the gameplay that feels perfectly judged and paced, introducing new elements and set pieces gradually and at just the right moments in a way that sometimes feels a bit metroidvania esque.

The cut scenes and dialog sequences, while still long in comparison to other games, do not seem to have the same interminable frequency or duration of those in nearly every other title in the franchise. The pace of the game is vastly better for the action and cut scenes having this more considered balance too.

And that is something the original Metal Gear Solid has in spades: stand out moment after stand out moment, whether it’s a new story revelation or a ridiculous boss battle, and they are delivered with such panache that the later games had a very tough act to follow, and in trying to one-up themselves every time, including the overblown Gamecube remake, seem to have lost the brilliant essence of the more restrained original in so many ways.

It could be argued that technical limitations limits the scope of Metal Gear Solid enough that the game doesn’t necessarily reach the dizzying heights of stealth cleverness that can be found in not just later MGS games but other more recent games such as the Hitman series, but sometimes simple (not simplistic) is truly golden.

 

 

 

18. Super Mario Galaxy

Joy. In gaming, if there is one feeling that that any developer can feel proud for eliciting from player, it is that. And Super Mario Galaxy might well be one of the most joyful games ever created.

It seems almost absurd that one game can contain so many moments of pure and unadulterated genius, and is even more absurd considering it’s not just that these moments represent the game’s high points, like you would expect in so many titles, but that they make up the very bedrock of the entire package. Packed full of such excellence, such wonder, and executed with such assuredness and confidence, that the small moments of brilliance scattered throughout each level become almost passe, such is the assault the game unleashes on your amygdala.

Superficially similar in terms of control scheme to older 3D Mario titles, but refined in just the right way and with just the right tweaks to make controlling the game an absolute pleasure once again. Playing Super Mario Galaxy after other platforming titles feels like coming home. And for those that have not played Mario titles before, how I envy what would be their first steps with such a gateway into Nintendo’s wonders.

People talk a lot about games eliciting real emotions from players, and whether they can tell stories that are good enough or affecting enough to make people feel them genuinely, but Super Mario Galaxy can bring tears to the eyes, purely through the medium of happy, joyful play.

The sweeping orchestral score is also perhaps one of the finest and most rousing ever composed for a game, and suits it perfectly.

 

 

 

17. Portal

The game that would launch so many tiresome memes...

Portal is, simply put, a little puzzle adventure of pure, mind bending genius.

Each level is its own mini story, as you fight your way out of each area chided by your AI captor, and every completed room feels like a small victory over the twisted minds of the puzzle creators. Every barrier to progress never feels like the fault of anything but your own ability to process the unique visual and spatial challenges in front of you, and you are never contained by any set pieces outside of your control that push you through the levels - your progress from completing puzzles is very much your own and at your own pace.

The sequel introduced many interesting additions to the gameplay, and expanded the story with set pieces to increase the length, but unfortunately while this was an admirable attempt to make it feel like a full-fat title, it lost so much of the purity of spirit and subtle humour found in the original Portal. Set pieces outside of the player control diluted the gameplay and took away some of the illusion of player freedom.

But not so in the first game. From the starting room to the surprising climax, Portal is clever, absorbing, funny, and singularly perfect.

 

 

 

16. Tetris

Ignoring what I said about Portal, very few games can be described as perfect. Even in the best titles there are usually flaws in some way in one or two little areas, and technical advances often make games seem outdated sometimes as soon as they are released. But Tetris is an enduring classic.

An absolutely peerless example of substance over style, countless versions later Tetris is still one of the most addictive games ever made. Puzzle games have come and gone since, but none have matched its humble brilliance. (Bust-A-Move and Puyo Puyo may have come close though.)

With just the right number of shapes for the human brain to be able to process at once, Tetris is a creation of just wonderful mathematical beauty, simplicity and elegance.

But the question remains: what is the best version? Well my favourite at least, and that of many, is of course Tetris DX.

The best puzzle game and the best plastic instruments game of all time - they would have sat happily a little higher up the chart I feel, but top 20 is perfectly respectable.

And you know, I can't argue with Tetris's inclusion - it was hugely important, a simple idea executed perfectly. Not really for me, but almost certainly led to the development of games I love.

Mario Galaxy I've still not played, so I can't argue against its inclusion. And over the years I've just learned to accept that the world is wrong about the worst mainstream stealth series ever made.

Yeah, that's a decent set of games with which to enter the teens.

Then again the most played game didn't get any votes as far as I can tell. I guess it says a lot about the type of community we have here rather than the quality of those games.

I've played and enjoyed all of the last batch and looking at the galaxy screenshot just reminds me how beautiful that game is. I much preferred it to the sequel so glad to see it finish higher.
