Had a bit of a frustrating session on this last night after a few days off. Started off at the first bonfire in CotD and after what felt like a gruelling run lasting an hour or so, I still hadn't found either a bonfire or shortcut back to that first bonfire (which I was waiting for since there's two doors either side of the bonfire you can't open from that side). Obviously I ended up dying and didn't have the heart to redo that whole section again. I think it might be easy to run through the first section again but the second section was quite narrow and full of hidden ambushes so not sure I'd have much luck running through that.

I can't tell if I simply hadn't reached the next shortcut/bonfire or if I missed one. Here's where I got up to:

  Hide contents

At the end of the rooftop section you open some massive double doors and just inside there there is a giant underneath the balcony you're on. I died outside these doors trying to get the item at the end of the rooftop section

  Reveal hidden contents

where you turned left to head up the stairs to the big doors after the run through the cemetery, go right for the first shortcut.

Spoiler

You're literally seconds from a shortcut to the bonfire there.

Same here.

Not the same one for me. That one is fairly obvious as it's out in the open, got it already. I must be missing a shard that's hidden away out of sight, like the last bone was. It's not on display until you do something, wondering if that's the same for the missing shard.

It makes the casting stronger too, theres a stat for it when you view a staff, it's at the bottom of the list below the other damage types.

Some staves get a bigger boost than others, and some staves are better at particular magics, I think.

You can make a funky sorcerer weapon from the Deacons soul, which let's you cast with R2, quite cool!

75 hours and we're done! Absolutely fucking epic from the off. Ended up with a lovely pyro chap.

The gear changes in difficulty over the quest were spectacular with some moments of near tears. It just kept going and for me stands on par with the first and maybe a nudge more due to updated combat and the likes.

its almost like 2 never happened and this feels like the true sequel. I'm sure I missed lots of Npc stuff and some lore. But that's fine as I will fire up the pc version and Look forward to it all again in 4K.

Im such a tit as I managed to skip the ending but thankfully know which one it was.

Superb.

I am enjoying this while simultaneously feeling like I've very much had my fill of the series and wouldn't really care to play another. Well, for a good long while at least, so I'm happy they get the chance to turn their talents elsewhere now.

Its still great in many ways, and peerless in some, but it really doesn't surprise me anymore. Part of the reason I had such a great experience with the first couple of games was the sheer sense of discovery, of learning a whole new vocabulary. Of exploring the type of environments and fighting types of enemies I felt like I'd never really fought or explored before.

I'm kind of immune to it all now, possibly not helped by a generous amount of asset reuse where I'm walking around the levels identifying what past levels they've used that particular bit of architecture from. I can second guess most ambushes now and there's only so many knights with big shields and snipers to confront before it all just feels a bit like you're going through the motions.

I haven't really had a WOW moment yet. I feel like I'm going through the Souls gears. Glowing item here. Cryptic NPC who laughs hammily after every sentence there. Woman to level up with at hub level here. Another gothic cathedral or RE4 like village there. Another enemy hanging from the ceiling/around the corner of a doorway here.

It's not really a comment on the game's quality. It just feels like the formula coughing and spluttering to offer anything to really set itself apart from its predecessors. I'll finish it (hopefully) and enjoy it I'm sure but I am looking forward to seeing what From can do freed from this formula.

Yeah I kinda felt like that at the beginning but now I'm getting close to the end there's another part of me that is like omfg I could totally  play a new set of levels in this exact game for literally ever and ever.

Soon there will be no new Dark Souls left.

Man that's weird.

I'm sure everyone will be "I wish there was a Dark souls 4" in a year or so. :D

I think it is just a case of us having quite a few (I'm including Bloodborne) within a short space of time plus some of us bought Dark souls 2 SotfS and played through that again after buying it on its initial release.

Of course Bloodborne 2 will be announced at E3   ;)

Oh and in case no-one mentioned it the DLC for Dark souls 3 is supposed to be out in Autumn (first part) and then next year for the second part.

So, YtG

Spoiler

It's weird there is a weapon there. Presumably you need to use that on him?

I don't have enough faith to weild it. Surely that's not the only answer?

My sword is doing fuck all damage.

Edit

Spoiler

What a dick, I'm looking at the wrong item in my inventory. You don't need faith at all.

I find I have good nights and bad. Thursday, two bosses down. Friday, getting fucked up in the CoC and lose 15,000 souls thanks to falling off an edge and getting killed going back to get them.

Is CoC the only way forward now? I've done CotD, FK and even gone back to get that Darkwraith in the cell (which was 2 second fight at that point).

Am I missing any areas or is it onward past CoC?

A thoroughly rewarding night rinsing the woods and taking down the AW and that black knight that was trolling me.

That dark sword is awesome with my Str. build.

Have managed to keep everyone at the shrine but couldn't find patches on this run so I reckon Master Onion has gone for good.

My some good progress on my last session

I was getting my arse handed to me by the AW so I back tracked and explored the CotD instead - I eventually found the boss (DotD) and now there doesn't seem to be anything left there worth exploring, unless I'm missing something?

I was able to level up a few times and found some estus shards so I was able to go back and beat the AW no problem!

The next area looks like it's going to be barrel of laughs - am I right in thinking this is the only way to go at the moment?

I've just done that bit and appear to have fucked up - NPC related

Spoiler

I joined the Rosario Dawson covenant but when I went back to Firelink, the pilgrim was dead and one of the NPCs was annoyed I'd joined the covenant and said ominously, that if we meet again, it'd be as adversaries. Any way to fix this?

Also, the pyromancer just refused the dark grave tome, said it needed someone depressed to read it.

I did the same thing.

I'm not sweating the NPC stuff. I saw less than half of it in DaS1, even less in DaS2 (mostly because quest continuation was partly based on summoning, which I never do), and as for Demon's Souls - forget it.

I think with these game you have to just enjoy the NPC quests you stumble upon, and then use a guide next time around if you care enough to see all the quest lines. Even then it's likely that seeing one will deny access to another.
