Protip for that mod - just turn off shadows for decent framerate, I can run on high settings otherwise!  :)

Scratch this, turning off shadows makes indoor bits look RUBBISH, so don't do that. Put everything on low except for textures and it looks and runs great.

Anyhoo, fuck tech talk, I've been on adventures! Well kind of.  Mild spoilers ahead of you want to go in totally blind (which I'd recommend BTW, so yes I'm typing this for no one to read..)

According to the in game time I've played for nearly 3 hours so far. I haven't even made it out onto that rooftop in Lothric Wall, where you fight one of the morphing snake hollows in the vanilla game (above where you find greirat).. It's hard! But not too hard. It's got a nice feeling of familiarity, but the colour pallette changes and enemy placements are keeping me on my toes!

After beating the watchdog in a few tries, I spent ages poking round cemetery or ash/flame & firelink.  There are some nice changes. For example, the door that lets you scale the bell tower is open by default. There's a small ramp onto the lower roof (no more goofy glitch tree stump jump required!)! There's a training dummy you can test your equipment on.

But my favourite bit, and what sucked up loads of time, is the sheer number of npcs. The mod defo seems to be leaning into the magic side of things.  It's complex and I don't quite get it yet, but there are probably about 12 different spell merchants in the shrine, all selling a mixture of old and new spells, along with armour and trinkets to aid. Loads 9f new types of upgrade materials and other consumables. So much to investigate!

Spent a good while tiptoeing through Lothric Wall, the enemy placements are great! And man, the archers can get you from miiiiiles away so you really have to keep an eye out for them. Got killed a fair few times but had some great moments.  Don't want to spoil those, really. Found a Bloodborne-inspired weapon already though, which was neat! I'll need to make it lightning before it will compete with my Astora straight sword tho!

Regular titanite drops from enemies quite frequently, along with the upgrade items needed to upgrade my talisman, so I've been very cautiously gathering souls and heading back to bonfire / Andre when needed. Homeward bones are expensive!

You can craft / alchemise at the bonfire to make common consumables (including bones) but this process requires 'alchemy agents', of which I've found very few so far.

Decided I needed the homeward miracle, it's been very hard to reclaim my bloodstains when I've died. Enemies hit like absolute lorries, so running past everything has proven tricky so far.  Heal has also been purchased. And helped!

Finished off my session by getting hold of lightning spear (omg my cast speed is pretty amazing thanks to my gear) so went back to the cemetery to finish off a big bad I ran away from at the beginning and claim a nice bit of loot!

Its very early days but my goodness it's nice it have a fresh feeling Souls to play! I'm loving just going at a glacial pace, exploring thoroughly and shaking off the rust.

Debating whether or not to start using a shield, I think it could be worth it for some of the faster enemies. I swear the Lothric knights are faster than they used to be!

So many things! My brain loves it.

Forgot to grab screenshot of the high wall, it looks a bit weird but also very nice. Will post one tomorrow 😁

Just installed that mod. I love magic so will be in my element with all these new classes and spells.  :eyebrows:

There's so much choice!!  I'm already thinking I'm going to have several playthroughs to try out the various bits and pieces.  It's weird as well because elemental weapons seem to be wholly int/faith damage based.  Which is a bit annoying because I've gone a class that basically started with 23 dex and 23 faith, I don't really need the dex, yet!

More good adventures tonight.  Crept all the way down to the bottom of the High Wall, was tense!  Really enjoying it still.

20211202224803_1.thumb.jpg.755ba7566a5c17bce379a71630ed9d99.jpg

Figured out something neat - you have access to all the covenant items (and some new ones I think, for the extra spell types) from the beginning, if you talk to all the vendors at the shrine (and I presume there are more to be found in the world).  The thing is, these items have a more tangible benefit in as much as they give decent buffs (I think my starting one gives something like extra Faith, or 5% lightning damage, something like that) but they also change the upgrade items that enemies drop.  This is good because I've now figured out why I couldn't get any of those alchemy agents I mentioned before! :D It also means I can now reliably / quickly collect titanite and other basic upgrade items, yay!

Put a few points into strength so I could equip a decent 100% block shield.  Ended up barely using it.  My lightning damage is pretty great, the knights around high wall are dying in a few lightning spears ⚡

Another nice thing - there are bonfires just before bosses, if this first one is anything to go by!  (Can't believe it took Fromsoft 7 games to realise that's a good idea, lol.)  Am interested to find out where I go after clearing High Wall, I'm hoping they've messed with the area order / progression a bit.

Not much more to report as I don't really want to be like WOW THEY PUT THIS THING HERE, because that's the best bit of playing this mod :)

All in all, it's going well.  So well that I wish I could just put real life in suspend mode and lose myself in it for a week.  But hey ho.  Onwards!

Some really good excursions this weekend. Game's really opened up now. You do end up at undead settlement after high wall, but there are some great tweaks that meant I deviated quite significantly from my usual route.

As usual I'll avoid discussing surprises and talk about some neat things.

First of all, by default your FP automatically recovers slowly. (I think that's different, at least? Maybe my memory is failing me) it makes casters so much more fun! And can mess around with weapon arts a lot more too. Only need blue estus in an emergency, which feels good.

There is a lot more weird enemy vs enemy hostility as well, lots of carnage going on in the distance as I stalked the settlement, was fun to watch.

I've found a while bunch of spell tomes as I've been exploring too, which opened up lots more magic options. Since my fightman is a faith guy, I was hoping to find some options for expanding my magic arsenal.. And, as I handed one of the tomes in, realised that the necromancer stuff is entirely faith based!

So I bought the strongest summon I could - its basically one of those massive red dudes with the pots from undead settlement. He's an absolute beast! He gets stuck pathfinding quite often, which is sad, but when he works, oh my goooooood he's incredible. He just pancakes everything. So great.

Interestingly, the necro summons have a single life, so if they die you can't summon them again until you rest at a bonfire. Which is a neat touch to avoid cheesing.

Also ended up with a badass miracle, a bit like vanilla's magic greatsword sorcery, it's a ethereal version of the demon greathammer. So basically me and my big boi just saunter round turning everything into pancakes. It's ace!

Not at pc right now so no screens of pretty scenery for now, but I just want to reiterate how effective a little change to the lighting and colour palette is for making things feel fresh. I swear the catacombs never used to be this dark! Proper dark souls 2 demo vibes!

In short - get it played, you swines!

Some holiday snaps :)

Loving the overgrown look of Firelink, feels so apt I didn't even notice it was different initially!

I swear this wasn't this pitch black before!  You have to use a torch for some of it, it's terrifying and great.

Here's my amazing magic hammer:

Road of sacrifices is now at a sort of twilight state, which looks lovely.

And the swamp looks bleak and miserable and awesome.

And Archdragon peak is ace!  It's raining, lightning in the distance, everything looks shiny and wet, plus there's a lot of new statues and stuff around the place.  Feels really cool!!

Does it require both DLC's? The Nexus requirements just say base game but then later down the page it has a small note saying you need both DLC's or it will crash?

Yes I believe it does need both dlcs

FFS Can't even get it to launch and I haven't even changed anything yet, just created a new character, there was no sound so I quit had a look around, tried to launch again and now its just a black screen with a cursor and I have to kill in task manager. God damn I may have to try a reinstall.

Uninstall the mod files if you can, run the game at least once without a mod installed (on a fresh install).

Not sure if that'll work, but has done on other mods in the past.

Edit also delete save games and try again.

Thanks I didn't even get that far it just decided to die on me, I've not played it on my main PC before, played a bit on my laptop but seeing as I completely rinsed it on PS4 I just haven't played it on my 1 year old PC. I'm trying a reinstall, this is where PC gaming is bloody annoying. Tested Hades and that was running fine out of steam, sound and all.

That is strange. I got it working without any issues.  I know how frustrating it can be though.

Good luck!

Got the game working again but can't get any sound out of my tv unless i run it in windowed mode and then it's got the window border and running at 4k, fustrating!

Edit: Ok I changed the settings in Nvidia Control Panel to Ultra HD resolution (60hz max only possible) instead of PC resolution (which allows 120hz) and I now have sound in DS3 full screen! Few, that's enough arsing about for today! Maybe I'll install the mod at some point lol.

I've ended up bashing my head against a couple of bosses that seem a wee bit beyond me right now (one defo seems like a "come back in 30 hours" kinda guy) , though ofc I have plenty of paths to explore still! Hoping I find a necro-type infusion path at some point, would like a new weapon.. Still using my starter kit!

So good though. Imagine what madness is going to get made for Elden Ring in 5 years time!

Honestly, I thi k se of the stuff In elden ring seems like it was taken from the mods lol.

There have been summons in mods for quite a while! And the range If different spells, and putting useful special atta ks on weapons, heck somebody got the trick weapons from bloodbourne to work as well.

Anybody playing convergence, have you found any oftthe ridiculously op weapons with awesome left trigger attacks yet... There are a few!

I've only found two obviously Bloodborne-inspired weapons so far, though I needed stats / was too poor to level them up so stuck with my lightning sword and magic for the time being!

Adventure update!  Have hit a few more 'dead ends' (I likely just need to git gud more than anything, but some of the bosses I do pathetic damage against) but a few things, gameplay wise, of note before holidya snaps!

Main one I discovered was the ability to retry bosses from the area in which you fight Gundyr in the vanilla game.  Best part about this is, you get all the same rewards for beating them repeatedly, including souls and the fancy 'remains' items you need to trade for some upgrade materials!  So that was nice.

Another thing I like is the number of daggers that have cool effects / buffs, e.g. my fave at the moment is one which increases lightning damage.  Neat!

I poked my way through the Catacombs, hoping to find some more necromancy stuff (seemed like an appropriate place to hide it!) and boy it turned out well!  I managed to bag myself a sexy gravelord scythe which matches my stats perfectly, and hits like an absolute truck.  Awesome stuff.  I'm also saving up to buy a next-level summon: pus of man.  Omg I can't wait, it's going to be amazing!  I also need to check out a miracle which explodes your summons for high damage, could be super useful when I'm using them against bosses and their health gets low.

There's a weird aspect to this mod that I'm not quite sure I understand yet, or perhaps it just doesn't work as I assume it does (maybe @5R7 can help?).  Spellcasting tools.  It appears that any tool can cast any type of magic, but they have affinities; e.g. they might be strong for lightning, medium for physical, and weak for magic / dark.  So far so good.  One issue I have is that it isn't clear what 'class' of those four each spell fits into, like it doesn't clearly state it anywhere (other than the implication of which vendor you buy them from). So for e.g. I have a spell to heal my summons, which I assume is magic type. No matter which spell tool I use (I have two, with opposite list of strong/weak) the heal always seems to be pathetically weak.  Am I missing something?  Likewise if I accidently case lightning spear with the wrong tool, it does like 300 damage instead of 350, not the end of the world.  It's just a bit weird and makes me wonder if it really is worth bothering trying to keep two tools upgraded!

Anyway, here're some pics!

Road to Cathedral of the Deep was moodyaf!

Inside the Cathedral looks very different, though I haven't gone back to look at the old version to see why I think that.

Got into Ariandel, at first glace doesn't look too different, but I wasn't going to take this message anything less than completely seriously...

Also made it out to Irithyll, omg it looks amazing without the clouds & fog hiding the 'secret'!!!

yeah, thats the single worst thing about the mod, that it doesnt say on the spell what type it is! as some you would think are one thing, but, they arnt...

you can learn it based on who sells it as they fit a type, but, its trial and error. Use the test dummy before the Tower at firelink to figure it out.

It "can" be useful to have 2 tools once you find things you like, but usually i focused on one, and then had a base tool for summons as it didnt matter.

until you get higher level and it makes sense to have a couple./

and yeah, you NEED to refight the bosses to get the upgrade materials, once you figure out what gives what, it can be quite easy to farm them. heck, it can take longer to load between the ares than kill some of the bosses later on!

Been playing through the Convergence mod for the last few days. It's bloody good!

I'm now back to being hesitant about looking round corners, checking every nook and cranny for items/enemies and taking things slowly. I've got 100% on the vanilla so this feels like a breath of fresh air :)

I "think" I've cleared everything up to the Catacombs except Farron Keep. I've just got the Wolnir fight left so I think I'll head back to the Keep first as technically that was how you got to the Catacombs in Vanilla.

Spoiler

Already found the warp to Irithyll after The Deacons and found the Catacombs via the bonfire at the end of Undead Settlement before the Road of Sacrifices

Went for a Faith/Dex build this time which I've never really done before so I'm enjoying the new spells and the old spells that I've never really used before. I also have the Graveyard Scythe that Rob found and that's now at +8. Every time I think I'm getting a bit OP, I get to the next area and find out that I'm definitely not lol

Apparently (not sure how true this is)

A RCE (Remote Code Execution) exploit has been found in Dark Souls 3 on PC (which could potentially affect Elden Ring).  I have no idea what I'm talking about but I believe it means that hackers can potentially run any code on your PC without permission and do malicious things like at worst brick your PC, steal data and at best ruin your Dark Souls 3 save.  I had no idea this was a thing, as this problem plagued earlier souls games.  In the past modders had created a patch called Blue Sentinel to make playing online in DS3 more secure which everyone is hoping will be updated to fix this latest exploit.  Crazy stuff.

EDIT - The Blue sentinel patch has been updated to to fix this exploit

Ha, I just posted this in Elden Ring and was aobut to copy/paste here.

From on the case already, all the PC servers for Souls are down.  Should be fixed soon enough!
