Jimbo Sterling loves it as well.

Horizon: Zero Dawn is just brilliant. I speak as a critic who has played more “open sandbox” games than any one human should and has grown so very weary of them. I should have gotten sick of this thing in an hour, but I’ve been glued to it for days and days and I don’t want it to end. I love existing in this world – a world of desperate survival but of growing culture and a sense of hope. A world of giant metal animals that promise some breathtaking fights.

I'm in the same boat as well. Sort of. I want to play it, as the machine combat seems genuinely thrilling and the world seems beautiful. But there's too much to play for me right now. Still deep into Nioh and the Switch is looming. Hope it does well though, and it probably will.

Seems to be reviewing well. I'm surprised Eurogamer don't even recommend it though given the rest of the 9s and above.

EG's reviews are pretty much meaningless to me because there's no consistency to them. I've never gotten a general idea what their stance is, what they collectively deem important in a game. When Edge hands out a certain score I can determine the quality just fine because it's perfectly clear what they look for in a game, but EG's Recommended and Essential never had consistent reasoning behind them.

Their Horizon review is pretty vague too. It apparently lacks "spark" and "heart", whatever that means exactly.

I'm not knocking this game at all. The reviews are positive and it looks like Guerilla have made a really fun, solid game, but its Zelda man. Even the 'bad' Zeldas are still really enjoyable games. There's always something magical about a new console Zelda, and i've got a feeling that BOTW is going to be something special indeed.

The one thing that EG says is that the main story, the personal drama, falls flat with bad motion capture, editing and writing. Story and characters is the one thing that can make the game stand out, as the gameplay doesn't look much different that what we have played before. What do others say about story and stuff (hadn't time to check the rest)?

So Skyward Sword and TP 'disappointed' despite getting massive scores and this gets massive scores and people shouldn't be worried about disappointment?

Hmmm.

Anyway, it looks nice for sure. But not worth it with... Zelda around the corner!

Thanks for clearing that out for us.

It's all relative I guess. With Guerrilla, my expectations were low already and the reviews doesn't change that too much, so it would be quite hard to be disappointed.  It's hard to argue against prioritising Zelda though, particularly when you know this will probably drop in price when you are done with that.  These few months have been surprisingly crowded with worthwhile games though.

Revival's opinion in a PS4 exclusive game thread is about as worthwhile as Boozys. Just move on past it.

I'm surprised that people are still unsure about this and are bigging up Zelda instead. Haven't the previous two big Zelda games (Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess) both disappointed? Yet Horizon just got 40+ 9/10s and a few perfect scores and people are still unsure if it'll be good? To the point that they're spending £280 to play the new Zelda game instead? Remember that it was supposed to come out in 2015. It was delayed by two years in a time when the Wii U was desperate for a new Zelda game. I'm not saying it will be disappointing just that it's not a sure thing and Horizon just reviewed extremely well.

Well if you're going on scores alone the last two Zeldas scored incredibly highly.

EDIT 27 perfect 100 scores on Metacritic including an Edge 10 for Skyward Sword.

I realise this is rllmuk and everything, but can't both games be good? If this is as good as the reviews say then great and I'll pick it up at some point. Zelda and Nier take priority for me next month, though.

That's probably the case. This is one of the best starts to a gaming year ever. It's a luxury that there is so much good stuff to choose from.

I think Horizon is brilliant for the combat alone. The game's machine combat designer is a massive fan of Vanquish, Dargon's Dogma, Bayonetta, Binary Domain etc. and it really shows. This kind of combat while stalking around a lush open world is a powerful combination.

Zelda vs Horizon debate.. wut?!

Why can't both games be great and worth your while? Why is it competitive? Why is this even a thing?

I've cleared out my "active" games (just means finished Deus Ex: Mankind Divided) to leave room to get fully balls deep in Zelda. It looks stunning.

This game certainly has surface level similarities and I am totally going to buy and play the game, just not right away.

Horizon will be played in a month or two.

Hmm (adds this to the pile of reasons to get a PS4 later this year).

General consensus seems to be the story is somewhat cliched but the game itself makes up for it. I enjoyed the 3rd Killzone game but none of Guerilla's others really grabbed me, still hope this goes well.
