It seems a strange move for Clyne. His stock was pretty high after last season, and at least one of the Champions League teams were looking for a decent right back. United don't really have a right back at all, and Zabaleta is a fading force. If he's bided his time a bit he might have ended up at one of those clubs, and been in a team challenging for the league in a season or two. Instead he's gone to a club who haven't been serious contenders for decades, aren't in the Champions League, and appear to be in a bit of a state of disarray at the moment.

The LDF won't like this, and will point to two semi finals last season, plus the spectacular anomaly that was 2013-2014. You might say that United are in a pretty poor state too, and City always seem seconds away from the bubble bursting, and may have a point with both those things. I just think Clyne has sold himself a bit short, and I don't see what he gains by moving to a team that generally hovers around the same region of the league as his previous club.

I think the rumours were that it was nailed on he was going to United, but his wage demands pissed off LVG enough that they ended their interest. I've said before, I think he could have done better to see his contract out and then move to a big club next season for free, but SFC would have been doing all they could to cash in once it was clear he wouldn't sign a new contract.

"Why did you choose to make the move to Liverpool, Nathaniel?"

"Oh, well, global fanbase innit?"

The "size" of a club is effectively its revenue and it is a fair assumption that clubs will be about as good as they are in their revenue ranking in the long term. The "global fanbase" of a club plays a fairly pivotal role in this - Liverpools commercial revenue accounted for 47% of its income in 2014.

This is exactly why Man U had no problem bringing in players with big reputations despite not being in the Champions League last year (Di Maria, Falcao, Valdes), and why Liverpool have no problem taking players off teams like Southampton.

I am pretty sure if there was real interest from any of the bigger clubs than Liverpool Clyne would have chosen them instead, but it seems as though there wasnt.

The Chelsea fanbase was not global before Roman came along (it wasn't even national!). Blackburns wasn't before Jack came along. Look at the players Anzhi, Galatasaray , Zenit have attracted in that past. If you pay enough, people will move.

Money must be the only reason you would move to Liverpool because if its for trophies, the odd cup win aside, it ain't happening.

How's Stoke's fanbase, globally speaking?

Not large. It seems that the "Why do I support Liverpool but come from Shepards Bush? Oh... My Uncle.. he.. er.. was Steve Heighways next door neighbour, so naturally I had no choice" excuse doesn't happen with the same frequency with Stoke for some reason.

Speaking of football clubs wasting huge amounts of money on dodgy signings, Saints have terminated the contract of mental firecracker Dani Osvaldo, our most expensive signing to date.

He's been playing in Italy and latterly for Boca Juniors as we've tried to get rid since he headbutted Fonte a while back, but nobody wants to sign him for some reason. A great bit of transfer work from Cortese and Pochettino there :)

With the wages, transfer free and pay off it looks to have cost us £25m in total. A terrible legacy for the new guard to have deal with!

Properly hideous.

You watch, I'm gonna say 2 seasons from now, everyone will be wearing black boots and the balls will be white.

Nike did a set of black boots in ... 2010 I think. I still have a pair. Anyway, they've not done it since but maybe in two seasons the clock will come around. I dunno why everyone gets so bent out of shape about it really, if we had actually stuck to Adidas Tangos and Puma Kings I'm sure people would be saying it's boring. So long as they actually work properly and don't cause Jabulani-style nonsense, that seems mainly reserved for World Cups.

It'd just be nice to have the option to buy a pair of boots that aren't bright green.

You can still get adidas kaiser boots. They're a lovely simple black with white stripes. I wear them myself. I think I'm the only player in my 5aside league that wears black boots. A guy in my team turned up in his new boots on Monday - orange and purple zigzags.

EDIT- That picture makes everything look really bright, they're not that bright

I dunno, I reckon they bloody are! We get pretty much all of them through my office and I have to take my hat off to whoever gets their colours done, they seem to raise the game each time, several goes around per year. You think they can't make anything crazier than that and the next one has animal print graphics down the side or something.

Remember when they did the pink ones that Bendtner wore and Rooney "wasn't allowed to because Ferguson thought he'd be targeted and injured in them"? lol marketing

Japan could have had a penalty earlier for the shove in the back - the ball into the box that the English keeper nearly mad a hash of.

From what I have seen (15 mins on TV, watching on my mobile till the Japanese penalty) england look stronger - they have ad plenty of possession and done well to break up Japan's rhythm. But it's a shame they feel the need to import the niggle from the men's game - the cricket-style appeals when they think they've been fouled, the little shoves when they think they can get away with it. I guess in this respect they will be well equipped for the USA if they meet them in the final...

I've largely stopped watching the men's game because I can't stand the cheating, and am not keen on it creeping in here. It's a real turn-off for me. I want us to win, but I want us to win fairly.

This is only the second game I've seen Japan play, but they seem to be good up until they get to the edge of the area and then they're a bit rubbish. They are here for the taking, for sure.

I have to say that as keen as I am to hopefully see us get through to the final, I really can't take the potential of extra time and penalties, especially after watching last nights game too. A result in the 90 minutes, please!
