England have had the better chances so far but one good chance for Germany and I think they'll take it. England's wastefulness cost them against Japan and I think it's going to cost them against Germany as well.

England have been every bit the equal of this Germany side. Should have scored when Jill Scott was through, and if Aluko had controlled that header a bit better just before she clipped Angerer, that was a golden chance too.

The issue's been raised recently about how Great Britain don't enter teams into the Olympics, London 2012 aside, and specifically the women for whom an Olympic tournament as as big as the World Cup. There was a fair article in the Guardian midweek about the politicking between the other home nations, and I largely agree with the idea that it's for the benefit of everyone if they could take assurances that it won't affect the status of one nation, four teams in world football. The UK isn't the only nation in the world that fields multiple FIFA-affiliated sides - France, the US, China and the Netherlands also do it and nobody's about to dispute the mighty Guam a place at the Asian table.

(Tongue nowhere near cheek, by the way - Guam's results in World Cup qualification are terrific).

Yet there's a secondary issue remaining unaddressed around qualification. Currently, there is no qualification tournament from Europe - instead, the three highest finishers in the World Cup go through, with playoffs used if necessary. This gives GB four shots - one each for England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland - at qualifying compared to one for everyone else. That the Welsh and Irish sides are weak should be neither here nor there in that respect - so are the Faroe Islands, but they don't get to piggyback on the success of Denmark (they participated in 1996) - FIFA don't allow it.

It's definitely something to be ironed out to the best possible satisfaction, because it's definitely in the UK's best interests to have their players compete at one of the highest levels. The U23 men's tournament is an afterthought by comparison.

Excellent performance by England and deserved winners. Germany peaked in the group stage and haven't looked their usual dominant selves since.

The 4-1 win over Sweden surely counts. After that, I totally agree - they were second best in every game since. Perhaps narrowly here, but the better chances fell to England.

Just over 24 hours now until the final. Whooo!

I have a question for all of those who have been watching the WWC.

If you were to compare the standards of football that has been played during the WWC what division in the men's leagues in England would it compare to most?

This topic came up earlier and my Dad says it's about as good as conference football, I haven't followed/watched any of it so I just nodded and agreed. The only thing I've seen of the WWC was the England OG which would have been a cracking goal had she have done it up the other end it was a JPN attacker

It's hard to say, largely because the games are slower and less physical than you'd get with fit men. It might be Conference standard on average, but then we are talking about many semi-pro or barely-pro players who often don't have the resources, let alone the wages of a mid-tier Conference side.

I think it's more informative to compare not with a particular standard of play in the current English pyramid, but with an earlier time period in the development of the men's game. A number of nations have limited footballing infrastructure, some of the African sides had never played a non-African side before this tournament, Colombia doesn't have an active national league, even the USA have had three separate leagues operating at the top level of women's football in the last twelve years, despite the huge success of the national side.

The South Pacific Games football tournament got underway in Papua New Guinea on Friday, with the opening game seeing Tahiti crush the Federated States of Micronesia 30-0. Micronesia, who used to be managed by Paul Watson, brother of comedian Mark, followed that up with a record 38-0 loss to Fiji, and they still have Vanuatu to play.

It won't be troubling Australia's 31-0 win over American Samoa in the record books, though, as it's an U23 tournament this year, doubling as the qualification tournament for the Olympics. The women's tournament starts tomorrow, with the winner of that facing New Zealand for a place in the Olympics.

"We did quite well in the second half", said the Micronesian coach.

Bradford City have just announced they have sold 17,000 season tickets ahead of the 2016/16 season (Twitter)

They are selling them at £149 for an adult ticket at the moment (I think the offer expires tomorrow) but Valley Parade is a big stadium, 25000 capacity, and having it full will be awesome next season. Better to have twice as many people paying half the price if you've got the room to accommodate them.

They always get a fair bit of piss-taking on our forums for their artificially inflated announced attendances due to their season ticket offers, I guess the trouble is that a lot of people buy them as they're cheap then only go to a handful of games. I doubt they'll get close to being full unless they're in a promotion race towards the end of the season but fair play to them for carrying on doing it. Great for the regulars to be able to get a full season on the cheap.

Similar thing happened when Huddersfield did it back in 2008, a little bit busier for the first few games then pretty much back to normal. Plus we appointed Stan Ternant as our manager that season which probably ensured none of the floating fans it was designed to entice ever came back
