I just don't get how 11 men v 11 men can concede every 2 minutes no matter how bad you are.

Plus they play for their country so much be able to move.

A report I saw said that they conceded a lot of goals from their own goal kicks. They had trouble clearing the goal kicks upfield, not one passed the halfway line.

You'll need to be resident for five years for FIFA to allow you to play, unless you've got ties to the country.

Doable, but I think age will count against you for this U23 side. The full squad weren't as bad - their record defeat is a comparively strong 18-0 to New Caledonia 12 years ago, but they haven't played since that South Pacific Games tournament ended.

New Caledonia sounds like a sci-fi version of Scotland. I can imagine Middenface McNulty hanging around there.

From that video, I reckon if i roped in a few fringe players to make up the eleven, my 5-a-side team would probably beat Micronesia. You have to feel bad for them. It looks like several of them have never played football before.

It does very much look like a bunch of players playing football who literally have almost no idea how to play football bar the basic rules so it begs the question as to why they're playing at all in a competitive match? Yeah, fair enough it's a game for everyone, but even if they are U23's it's not like they're playing world beaters. Anyway, last time I played an U23 side they ripped us to fucking shreds the non-stop running bastards, where's the fight in the Micronesian lot?

Because Blatter.

The genius way Sepp Blatter has retained control of FIFA for all these years is that each country's equivalent of the FA has a single vote, and the money that is distributed after a World Cup is split evenly between all the FAs. So somewhere, a Micronesian official is raking in the same WC funds as Germany, Spain, the USA, etc. It's in their financial interests to appear to have a football team even if the truth is they actually don't.

Blatter keeps the system this way so that all these minnows have a massive financial incentive to vote for him, as anyone who genuinely had football's interests at heart would probably have another look at the system! Playing devil's advocate, perhaps it's not a completely barmy idea if your sole objective is to spread football into areas of the globe where it isn't played much, and it's not as if the German FA needs that WC money. It does have the effect of making Blatter an unopposable dictator, and puts a lot of power into the hands of tiny, two-bit FAs who are often corrupt. This is the reason the likes of Jack Warner are now a household name. Without this system, would anyone care enough about the Trinidadian Greg Dyke to bribe him millions for his vote? But hey, at least we have Micronesia playing in World Cup qualifiers! Even if by the looks of it they don't particularly want to.

Not quite because Blatter - the Federated States of Micronesia aren't members of FIFA, OFC, AFC or any other confederation.

The competition is organised by the Pacific Games Council. Their participation is apparently part of a long term plan to gain FIFA membership. That looks like a very long road right now, but the last time the full international squad played their results weren't particularly different to other minnows in the South Pacific over the years.

Chucking together 18 kids who had never met as a complete group until two weeks before the tournament and asking them to play against settled teams with developed footballing infrastructure, however, has been an utterly disastrous idea and definitely not the way to go about things. It's more likely that this'll set back any sort of funding for the team.

Wales in Worlds top 10 rankings for the first time.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/33458794

In other ranking news, the Faroe Islands are up to 74th, the highest they've ever been. The rankings today are also used to determine the seedings for the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, so the pots are as follows:

Pot 1: Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, England, Wales, Spain, Croatia

Pot 2: Slovakia, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Czech Republic, France, Iceland, Denmark, Bosnia

Pot 3: Ukraine, Scotland, Poland, Hungary, Sweden, Albania, Northern Ireland, Serbia, Greece

Pot 4: Turkey, Slovenia, Israel, Ireland, Norway, Bulgaria, Faroe Islands, Montenegro, Estonia

Pot 5: Cyprus, Latvia, Armenia, Finland, Belarus, Macedonia, Azerbaijan, Lithuania, Moldova

Pot 6: Kazakhstan, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Georgia, Malta, San Marino, Andorra

I would not want to be in the group with Italy or France.

I live in Stockport, and County had arranged a pre-season friendly against Burnleys development squad (i.e U21).

However, because the two clubs had an antagonistic history whipped up by a local journalist in the 90s (largely dormant now), Greater Manchester Police designated it a Category A game. County - quite reasonably in the views of both sets of fans - refused to pay up and the game is cancelled - http://www.stockportcounty.com/news/article/burnley-friendly-match-cancelled-2530001.aspx

By designating it a category A match, a pre-season friendly on a Tuesday night in July between Stockport County FC (Vanarama National League North) vs Burnley FC development squad was given the same category of costing as the Premier League game between Manchester United and Liverpool.

Albania have been awarded a 3-0 win over Serbia for the abandoned game when someone flew a drone into the stadium with a Greater Albania logo, and then it all kicked off. Originally, UEFA had awarded it 3-0 to Serbia, then docked the Serbs three points. The CAS have decided it was Serbia's fault, so upheld their docking but awarded the game to Albania.

Albania now have ten points, same as Denmark and two behind Portugal, with a game in hand. All three are effectively guaranteed a playoff place. Serbia are bottom on -2 and out of the competition.

What's the betting that Gerrard was offered a similar wage before he decided to go to America for a big payday? He'd still be at Liverpool if it wasn't for wage demands, of that I'm sure. We go again (as long as you pay me more).

Steven Gerrard has criticized Raheem Sterling for turning down £100k per week and wanting to leave Liverpool.

Strong words from the man who was always-committed-to-the-Kop... except for those few weeks in 2004.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/l/liverpool/4653041.stm

To be fair, he criticised him for all the shenanigans that have gone on, not for turning down 100k a week or wanting to leave Liverpool.
